1 CONTINUING TO KEEP OUR CALENDARS FULL I hope you all had a blessed and productive Lenten season with the rounds of rehearsals and services leading up to Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Thanks to those who were able to attend our March 11 concert at The Trust. We gained a number of new folks who are interested in following and attending our community programs as a result of the concert. We have had an exciting year of programming and it s not yet over! Our April organ crawl showcases three fine E. M. Skinner instruments which our area is fortunate to have being played, maintained, and appreciated. A description of the day s events follows as well as the details of May s member and scholarship banquet and the recital immediately following dinner. Support your chapter and the efforts of the many committees by attending these events. Your chapter s Program Committee has been working on a varied and interesting calendar of events for the year. More will follow on our monthly offerings. Remember to check the Local Events page at to stay in the know of the area s events. The page is constantly updated as new events are submitted. A new department, The Members Bulletin Board, has been added to the electronic version of the Herald Trompette (newsletter budget and space don t permit its appearance in the print version). Under this heading will appear expanded descriptions of non-chapter-sponsored events as submitted by the event s coordinator. Blessings in the coming months to you in all your musical endeavors! Soli Deo Gloria! 1 MARK V. HERR, DEAN

2 UPCOMING CHAPTER EVENTS Lancaster Chapter Organ CrawlMM MMApril 21 The Three Lancaster Skinners April s AGO Chapter meeting will take a different twist. We have set up an Organ Crawl for Saturday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 noon. We are providing you an opportunity to visit examples of three Skinner organs located here in Lancaster. Skinner was a preeminent pipe organ company that built organs in the early 1900s. We will begin our crawl at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 20 E. Clay Street, the site of Skinner Opus 805, 1929, three manuals, and 27 ranks. It will be described and demonstrated by organist Bill Rhoads after which you get to try your hand at it. The next stop is St. John s Lutheran, 223 W. Orange Street, located five minutes from Otterbein. There resides our second Skinner Opus 763, 1929, three manuals, and 23 ranks. Hang on to your music as you are welcome to try this one out, too. We conclude at Westgate Baptist Church, 2235 Harrisburg Pike (west of Park City and Women and Babies Hospital, on the right side heading west). This Skinner, Opus 758, 1929, is not original to the church as it comes from the Brooklyn Museum in New York. It has a very interesting story. Come, and bring your music! The morning s schedule will be: 8:30 9:00 Coffee as we gather at Otterbein United Methodist 9:00 9:50 Hear/see/play Skinner, Opus 805 9:50 10:00 Travel to St. John s Lutheran 10:00 10:45 Hear/see/play Skinner, Opus :50 11:10 Travel to Westgate Baptist 11:10 12:00 Hear/see/play Opus :00 Lunch together for anyone interested You are encouraged to arrive early (8:30) for coffee and fellowship. We encourage you to carpool. Parking is available, but traveling together would be desired to get to know each other better as we often work alone. Consider joining us for lunch afterward. So that we can make a lunch reservation, please one of us if you ll be joining us or with any questions pertaining to the day s event: Margaret Marsch, margmarsch@gmail.com Greg Gehman, ggehman@wheatonalumni.org GREG GEHMAN, PROGRAM COMMITTEEMM 2

Lancaster native Peter Stoltzfus, now Peter Stoltzfus Berton, will return home to play the rededication recital on the organ at St. John s Episcopal Church, Marietta, on Sunday afternoon 29 April at 3 p.m. Originally a small 1959 Wicks four-rank unit organ, James Carbaugh, son of coorganist Robert Carbaugh at the church, added trumpet and celeste ranks about ten years ago as his Eagle Scout project, his dad assisting and Ray Brunner generally over-seeing the project. With the electrical systems in the console showing their age after 59 years, the parish contracted last year with the Brunner firm to totally replace the innards of the console, manuals and pedals included, and Bob has made a gift to the church of filling out the top octave of the 2 diapason rank, which was wired from the existing diapason rank at 8 and 4 pitches when Jim did his scout project but which lacked the top octave of pipes. The current project has also added a very few judicious couplers for greater flexibility. Thus, Peter has the challenge of playing a full program with some major works on it on a fairly small instrument. Included: the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (Bach), Leo Sowerby s Requiescat in Pace, several other works, and concluding with movements 1, 4, and 5 of Symphony No. 5 (Widor), thus closing with the famous toccata that should please music lovers in the crowd that day. William Messick, now also an aspiring Eagle Scout and an organ student with Margaret Marsch, has taken on the re-stenciling of the display pipes in the organ case as his Eagle project, thus the second scout to use this instrument toward that very honorable achievement. This project has been a great act of faith on the part of this little parish. Peter s program is being underwritten by an individual of the parish to celebrate the project and with hopes for another 59 years of worship music from the instrument. The church seats ca. 135 people, so an early arrival is advised. Following the concert a complimentary light supper will be served. Dr. Karl E. Moyer, F.A.G.O. 10
