2 Some forever, not for better; some have gone and some remain. All these places have their moments with lovers and friends I still can recall. Remember? The Walkout The Knox Game The Little Theatre Bagpipe Band The Oracle Dean Jean Octopus Club Gracie and Bobby Saga Food Service The Senior Bench As a Baby Boomer, you remember the 50s and 60s as decades of extreme contrasts happy memories of growing up in an era of abundance and freedom tempered with memories of nuclear threats, assassination and war. While popular culture celebrated the British invasion and the space race, counterculture gave birth to draft and race riots, bra burning, psychedelic drugs and sit-ins. Nowhere were all these activities more concentrated than on college campuses, which served as incubators for thought and launching pads for movements. As a student at Monmouth College during that time, you likely recall some of the turbulence, but due to Monmouth s small size and remote location, chances are you remember college as a time of innocence, youthful exuberance and optimism. And, now as a Golden Scot celebrating 45 or more years since graduation, you have matured since those days; but the values, character and friendships you developed as a Scot live on. Rekindle your memories of that special time and place with a weekend of reminiscing, stimulating activities, food and fun. During the Golden Scots Celebration, you can stay on campus (in an air-conditioned dorm!), reconnect with classmates, tour the Maple City, participate in a nostalgic chapel service, sing in an alumni choir, and attend educational seminars. You will also get to see all that s new at Monmouth College and have an opportunity to interact with college staff. Special activities and acknowledgment will be offered for the reunion classes of 1955, 1960, 1965, and THURSDAY, JUNE 5 Residence Halls/Registration Open 12:00 pm Campus Tour 12:30 pm Spend a productive hour reorienting yourself to campus, which since your college days has nearly doubled in area and undergone a $120 million transformation. But don t panic Wallace Hall, the chapel, the dorms along Ninth Street and many other MC landmarks are right where you remember them. Golf cart transportation provided. Educational Garden & Farm Tour 1:45 pm Students produce a remarkable variety of food crops in their small but mighty campus garden. Learn about the many crops they grow, vegetables they can, honey they collect, and seedlings they start in a greenhouse built from scratch. Committed to green living, the students compost food waste from the dining hall, pump water collected from drain pipes using solar power and rotate crops to keep the garden productive all season long. A six-acre farm, featuring an orchard, berry plants and a variety of produce is under development two blocks east of the garden. Evolution and Revolution: Monmouth s Changing Landscape 3:00 pm Like many small towns, Monmouth has faced significant challenges adjusting to changing American shopping habits and lifestyles. Creative minds are working on ideas for breathing new life into what was formerly a vibrant retail district. Meanwhile, generous alumni and visionary leaders have transformed the college campus into a community showplace, well-equipped to meet the academic and residential demands of the modern college student. Session presented by MC Director of College Communications, Jeff Rankin, and City of Monmouth Director of Community Development, Paul Schuytema Individual Investing: Challenges & Opportunities 4:30 pm Drawing from his extensive experience in money management, MC chairman of the board, Bill Goldsborough 65, will share ideas and techniques for successful investing in today s ever-changing financial marketplace. Progressive Dinner 6:00 pm Experience the ambience of new and renovated campus facilities while enjoying wine and hors d oeuvres in the Huff Athletic Center, salad in the former Carnegie Library, a main course in the Center for Science and Business and dessert in Quinby House. Evening Social Wind down in the elegant Bowers Hall lounge after a busy day. Beverages and snacks furnished.

3 Some are dead and some are living, in my life I ve loved them all. But of all these friends and lovers, there is no one compares with you. Friday, June 5 Saturday, June 6 Morning Walk 7:00 am Get your heart pumping while giving your knees a rest with a brisk walk on Monmouth s well-cushioned 200- meter Niblock Memorial indoor track. 8:00 am Religious and Spiritual Life on Campus 9:15 am The Rev. Dr. Teri Ott, college chaplain, will present an overview of Monmouth s active and growing spiritual life program, including plans for a permanent Lux Center in the current Marshall Hall, which will be home to an array of faith-based, leadership and service activities. Meet the President 10:15 am Dr. Clarence Wyatt, MC s 14th president, will discuss his visions for the future of the college and provide an overview of his first year at the helm. Picnic 11:30 am Had a pork tenderloin sandwich lately? Dine on the western Illinois culinary classic in the open air of Dunlap Terrace. Alumni Choir Rehearsal 12:30 pm Forgotten the words to A Flame of White and Crimson? Have difficulty carrying a tune? Doesn t matter. Lend your school spirit and your voice to an alumni vocal ensemble that will perform later in the weekend. Campus Tour (see Thursday) 1:00 pm A Lesson on Legacies 2:15 pm It s an important life task we often think about but it usually falls to the bottom of our to-do list. Dave Coots 65, founding member of the Indiana law firm of Coots, Henke & Wheeler, P.C., will discuss opportunities for and benefits of estate planning. Learn how to maximize the use of your financial assets while you are living, as well as insure that people or organizations you care about benefit from your legacy after you re gone. Q & A with Senior Staff 3:15 pm Wonder how the college experience has changed since you were a student? This is your opportunity to ask MC s vice presidents any questions of your choosing, ranging from specific to philosophical. Golden Scots Celebration Dinner 6:00 pm Join classmates for an elegant meal, college songs, remarks from President Wyatt and recognition of reunion classes. Evening Social (see Thursday) Morning Walk (see Friday) 7:00 am 8:30 am McMichael Heritage Society and 1853 Society 8:30 am Alumni who have made estate, endowed or major gifts, or who have made a minimum contribution of $1,000 to Monmouth during the past year will be special guests at this private breakfast. (By invitation only) Antibiotics & Superbugs: An Escalating Conflict The discovery of antibiotics was one of the most important medical advances in history. Yet now bacterial resistance to antibiotics is giving rise to a potential world health crisis. As a veteran microbiologist for the pharmaceutical industry, Karen Bush Watts 65 was a member of teams that developed such antibiotics as Azactam, Zosyn and Levaquin. She will share her insight into this growing threat and offer analysis on potential solutions. Alumni Choir Rehearsal (see Friday) 10:45 am at Pizza Lou s 11:45 am If you attended MC after 1957, chances are you have fond memories of late nights chowing down on Italian Village pizza or sandwiches. Proprietor Lou Pavlic is no longer with us, but his legendary pizza lives on. We guarantee a cheesy experience at this landmark that time forgot. A couple of things that didn t occur to Sam Thompson...life as a feminist philosopher 1:30 pm The founding director of the Center for the Study of Genders and Sexualities at California State University, Los Angeles, Ann Garry 65, is a retired professor of philosophy who helped pioneer the field of feminist philosophy. She will discuss her varied experiences as a distinguished scholar, educator, editor, feminist and philosopher. Greek Open Houses 2:45 pm Tour old and new Greek houses, from the historic founding homes of Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma to the elegant new Alpha Xi Delta house, built in the neo-victorian style. All MC Greek alumni are invited to reminisce and view historic memorabilia from their chapters, both active and inactive. Campus Tour (see Thursday) 3:15 pm Reunion Class Socials and Dinners 5:30 pm Join members of your class for refreshments and reminiscing, followed by a private dinner at 6:30 a.m. Alumni not celebrating milestone reunions are welcome to dine with the Class of 1955, 60, 65 or 70. Please circle preferred reunion class on your Registration Form. Campus Dinner 6:30 pm Given sufficient demand, a separate dinner will be offered for alumni not celebrating milestone reunions. Location to be announced. Evening Social (see Thursday) Sunday, June 7 Chapel Service 9:00 am Led by the college chaplain, this special service will pay a nostalgic tribute to chapel services of old, with familiar hymns performed by the Alumni Choir. Recently departed classmates will also be memorialized. Closing in Main Dining Hall
