2 What Is SNAAP? The Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) is an annual online survey, data management, and institutional improvement system designed to enhance the impact of arts-school education. The SNAAP survey instrument asks individuals with arts degrees about their educational and career experiences. SNAAP will provide the first national data on how artists develop in this country, help identify the factors needed to better connect arts training to artistic careers, and allow educational institutions to look at the systemic factors that helped or hindered the career paths of alumni, whether they have chosen to work as artists or pursue other paths. In three years of field testing ( ), 250 institutions from 42 states and territories participated in SNAAP with about 20,000 arts alumni responding to the survey. SNAAP is administered by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research in collaboration with the Vanderbilt University Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy. Staff includes George Kuh, director, and Steven J. Tepper, senior scholar. Who Can Participate? Any institution that offers high school, baccalaureate, and/or graduate degrees with majors or concentrations in any arts field is eligible. We define the arts in the broadest sense, to include art, architecture, design, media arts, film, music, theater, dance, and creative writing. Eligible institutions can include: Arts high schools Independent colleges of art, design, and the performing arts Arts departments, programs, and schools within comprehensive colleges and universities Both undergraduate and graduate alumni are surveyed. 2 Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts SNAAP is of major significance to our field. 3 What Kinds of Questions Are Asked? Arts alumni respond to questions about: satisfaction with curricula and services offered and other institutional experiences educational path and other degrees/majors pursued current and past employment and education relevance of arts education to work and further education support and resources needed after graduation types of art practiced and how often income and support, student debt, and other financial issues. What Are the Benefits of Participating? Institutions need good data to respond and plan effectively as well as to meet accreditation requirements. SNAAP also helps institutions connect with alumni in a different and meaningful way. SNAAP is especially timely given the changing environment in which arts training programs operate: career opportunities are shifting, competition for both students and resources is on the rise, and a generational shift in leadership is under way. What Does a Participating Institution Receive? We also learned several new things from our alumni through this vehicle SNAAP Institutional Participant How Is SNAAP Administered? SNAAP partners with institutions to administer the survey to all arts alumni for whom there is a valid address. Included in the cost of participation is the opportunity to find lost alumni through the services of a national alumni search firm. SNAAP shares all updated alumni contact information with institutions. Step 1: Participating schools provide an alumni data file and customized messages to SNAAP. Step 2: Alumni with valid addresses receive an invitation to complete the survey at a secure website. Step 3: SNAAP handles all other aspects of survey administration (follow-up with nonrespondents, data collection, and analysis). 5 What Does It Cost to Participate in SNAAP? Postsecondary Institutions Registration Fee: $300 (nonrefundable) Administration Fee: $3,000 7,500 (sliding scale based on size of population file see below) Includes separate reports for undergraduate and graduate alumni responses.
