2 DETROIT EXPO DAY at Belle Isle Park SUNDAY, APRIL 15, :00 AM 4:00 PM Expo activities will be located across several sites on Belle Isle Park, including: Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, Belle Isle Aquarium, Belle Isle Nature Zoo, and Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Belle Isle Nature Zoo 176 Lakeside Drive Amusement Park Physics Learn about the physics and engineering behind amusement parks by creating and designing models. Artifacts from the Past 150 Years of Detroit s History In conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Wayne State University, come see Detroit artifacts that span that period of time. Can a Computer Game Help Us Understand Diabetes? We can t conduct research on real animals, but come explore a computer game where scientists use sand-rats to research diabetes. Drones Learn to fly drones and the physics behind the machinery. Fun for all ages. 3 Recycling in Detroit Green Living Science will provide demonstrations for youth to engage with the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Test your Bird Beak Learn about local birds and things you can do to support their success. Tiedyeology Discover the chemistry and geometry behind the art of tie dye. Trees: Making the World Better One Planting at a Time Trees provide many benefits for us many that we can t see or touch. Come learn how trees improve our world as you plant your very own seedling. Understanding Free Radicals: Research for Middle and High School Students See a real magnetic resonance device that can detect free radicals. Learn how your children can do scientific research in a magnetic resonance lab. Dossin Great Lakes Museum 100 The Strand Can You Make it Across? Designing Bridges With Limited Resources The design challenge allows parents and students to act as designers and engineers, as they compete in teams to build a straw bridge. Candy Chromatography Use candy to conduct chromatography investigations and learn how chromatography works. Cards to the Sky This workshop challenges participants ability through a fun activity that tests strength, teamwork, and engineering skills. Don t Stop the Music: Creating the Next Generation of Audio Engineers Motor City Woman and Audio Engineers of Detroit will demonstrate how to use software to compose and edit music in an interactive presentation. Draw a Circuit Students will have a hands-on learning experience about conduction and build a creative electrical circuit using graphite. Engineer a Solar Bug Engineer a solar bug using a motor, a solar cell, and a toothbrush head. A solar cell stores energy from light and converts it into bug power. Propelled Model Rockets Whether you are into flying rockets at school, for fun, or competition, propelled model rockets offer a truly rewarding experience. STEM Opportunities Lawrence Technological University will be on hand to showcase science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields and opportunities. TechTransport ITEC s TechTransport is filled with instructors and programs dedicated to improving the STEM futures of Michigan s children. Tuskegee Airmen Flight Simulator Join us for an exciting flight simulator demonstration. What s That Sound? Engage in creative and innovative handson sound activities using new technologies to explore STEAM careers. The STEMinista Project is a Michigan Science Center initiative aimed at girls in 4th-8th grade to encourage them to explore STEAM careers.

Art and Observation at Microscopic Scale 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM In this workshop, you will use an origami microscope (Foldscope) and art supplies to create works of art from scientific observation.
