2 2 : 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING SEASON IN REVIEW Preparing for the first event: Several Navy faithful prior to the 200 medley relay versus Air Force. In the summer of 1996, he moved on to Philadelphia as an assistant coach with the Villanova program for one year before coming to the Naval Academy. 5 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 5 JOE SURIANO DIVING COACH 27TH SEASON Joe Suriano begins his 27th season as Navy s diving coach. Under his tutelage, nine divers on Navy s men s team and two divers on the women s team have qualified for 19 NCAA Division I Championships. All told, his divers have earned 14 Division I All-America accolades. One of his greatest thrills came in 1991 when he was named the Division II Coach of the Year after Stacia Johnson captured the NCAA title. Suriano earned a bachelor s degree from Michigan in 1970 and a master s degree from Eastern Michigan in Prior to coaching at Navy, he was the diving coach at Eastern Michigan from and at Vanderbilt from Suriano was named an International Olympic Committee diving expert in 1985 and conducted a 21-day clinic for 30 diving coaches in New Delhi, India. In 1994, he was named an official and an assistant diving coach for U.S. Diving at the Dive Canada International Championships. He also served as an official in 1995 at the World University Games in Fukouka, Japan, and at the World Military Games in Rome, Italy. He also served as a diving coach at two U.S. Diving National Training Camps and was named to the U.S. Diving national coaching staff. Most recently, he directed the American diving team at the 1999 World Military Games in Zagreb, Croatia. Suriano completed a term as the chairman of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Rules Sub- Committee on Sept. 1, In addition to his 91 honor from the NCAA, he also has been named the Patriot League Diving Coach of the Year and the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League Diving Coach of the Year during his tenure at Navy. ADAM KENNEDY ASSISTANT COACH FIRST SEASON Adam Kennedy enters his first season as a member of the Navy coaching staff. Although this is his initial season at Navy, this is his second time he will be working under head coach Bill Roberts. Kennedy served as an assistant coach under Roberts at Colgate from January 2002 through May 2003, then served as the program s interim head coach. Two of his distance swimmers won Patriot League titles during his stint in Hamilton. During the fall of 2003, he then moved on to a graduate assistant s position at Ohio where he once again coached the men s and women s sprinters. While there his men s 200 freestyle relay team set a new school record. Kennedy swam collegiately at Davidson College, earning four letters. His prep career included swimming for Ben Davis and the Tualatin Hills Swim Club and for Sunset High School in Portland, Ore. KENNEDY S HISTORY Hometown Portland, Ore. 6 6 : 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING OUTLOOK The Navy men s swimming and diving team experienced many firsts during the season. For the first time in nearly 30 years, a new head coach in Bill Roberts would be on the pool deck in Lejeune Hall. Also for the first time, the Mids would compete in both the Patriot League and Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League championship events. Navy made their presence felt at the Patriot League Meet immediately, winning 11 events and taking the team title by nearly 300 points. In addition, for the first time in 31 years the Mids qualified five athletes for the NCAA Championship, scored points at the national meet for the first time in 10 years and saw its 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams earn Honorable Mention All-America honors. Last year was an amazing season in many regards, said Roberts. Led by an awesome senior class, we achieved almost everything we set out to do, both individually and as a team. As the new coach, it was a great thrill to be leading this group of midshipmen, let alone walk the pool deck with pride at the NCAA Championship and the U.S. Olympic Trials. While Navy graduated some talented athletes, including 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials-participant Noah White and First-Team All-Patriot League honorees Marshall Boyd and Terrence Fenningham, the Mids return nine competitors who garnered postseason accolades from the Patriot League and scored points in 17 events at the EISL Championship. We have a tremendous challenge ahead of us as a program, said Roberts. An amazing precedent was set last year. However, much of what was earned last season is on par with the vision and expectations of our program. With everyone on the team seeing Navy compete on the national level last year, I expect that every swimmer and diver will be committed to realizing those same or similar goals for themselves and the team this year. Jake Keefe BACKSTROKE Headlining this event for Navy are Kevin Mukri, Chris Speicher and Mike Linn, with returning swimmers Kurt Lobaugh and Eric Bond also expected to score points for the Mids in the various events. Mukri won the 200 back and placed third in the 100 back at the Patriot League Championship, while reaching the consolation final in both events at the EISL Championship. He placed first or second in the 200 back in every dual meet he competed in, while never placing below third in the 100 back. Speicher scored points for Navy in almost every 200 back race on the season, including a 14th-place showing in the event at the Patriot League Meet. Linn reached the finals in the 100 back at the Patriot League Meet and scored points for the Mids in the event at the EISL Championship. In addition to the already strong group of returning swimmers in the event, look for newcomers Danny Mizelle, John Lyles and Chris Jenkins to only bolster the stroke for Navy. By stroke, this could be our most improved event this season, said Roberts. Everyone returns in this event and all swam well last season, both in the regular season and in our championship meets. It will be a terrific training situation with several qualified young backstrokers coming in to provide support in the event. BREASTSTROKE Brian DeMell, who recorded top-five finishes in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at the Patriot League Championship, and John Kennedy, a consolation finalist in both events at the Patriot League Meet, return to lead the Navy breaststrokers. They will be joined by fellow returning swimmer Justin Wells and freshmen Jimmy Jones, Kevin Kysiak and Mike Lowhorn. Similar to last year, we look for continued improvement in this event throughout the season, said Roberts. How much we improve in this event is up to us. If this relatively young contingent can push each other Monday through Saturday, then we can expect our competitiveness to increase by March. BUTTERFLY Christian Foschi, Ian Getzler and Jake Keefe will be looked upon as leaders in the butterfly events. Each of them scored points in one event at the Patriot League Championship, while Getzler recorded Navy s fastest time of the season in the 200 fly in scoring at the Eastern Championship. The Navy trio will be joined in this event by returnees Chris Hilliard, Lobaugh and Brad Snyder, along with newcomers Matt Chesney, Steve DeLeonibus, Jones and Andrew Thorn. We need to address this event with a greater emphasis, said Roberts. The 200 fly sets the tone for the second half of a dual meet. As a team you want to come out firing in this event. Within this young corps should arise a formidable group to provide the boost we need in the butterfly. FREESTYLE - SPRINT One of the most talented strokes last season is expected to once again be strong for Navy A total of 43 majors are offered among 18 areas of study in three academic divisions.

7 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 7 Brian DeMell this season. Leading the way will be Mike Linn, Joe Smutz and Brad Penley, along with Bond, Foschi, Hilliard and Ryan McAnally. Smutz finaled in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events at both league championships and would go on to compete in both events at the NCAA Championship. Linn followed up his third-place finish in the 100 and sixth-place showing in the 50 at the Patriot League Meet by scoring points in both events at the EISL Championship and competing in both of Navy s relay teams at the NCAA Championship. Though the personnel make-up of this group will be much different than last year, we are expecting similar results, said Roberts. Historically this has been a prime event for our program. Though we graduated some of the program s best swimmers in this event, remaining in place is a solid corps of young sprinters ready to race. FREESTYLE - MIDDLE DISTANCE Look for Keefe, Danny Flemming and Andrew Plumb to lead Navy in the middle distance events, with Tommy Brown, Christian Nielsen, Greg Schmucker and Thorn to challenge for points, as well. Keefe scored points for Navy in every 200 free event during the dual meet season and narrowly missed reaching the finals in the event at the Patriot League Championship. Flemming placed fourth in the 200 and 500 events at the Patriot League Meet and scored in both events at the EISL Championship, as well. Plumb placed fifth in the 200 at the Patriot League Meet. We have a strong mix of experience and youth that should blend well for another exciting season, said Roberts. Our goal this year will be to build upon our previous successes in the 200, while aiming to win more of the 400/500 races throughout the season. FREESTYLE - DISTANCE Navy returns its top distance swimmers from one year ago in Snyder, Getzler and Andy Bockus, with Josh Andres, Matt Chesney and Adam Hine expected to add to Navy s already talented contingent. Snyder, Getzler and Bockus each recorded top-10 finishes in the 1,650 at the Patriot League Meet and scored for Navy in the event at the Eastern Meet. In addition, Getzler posted Navy s fastest 1,000 time on the season, while Snyder did the same in the 1,650. The entire event returns and are coming off a season where every- one made solid gains, said Roberts. This year, we expect greater training and competitiveness to lead to marked growth during our championship season. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY DeMell, sixth place in the 200 IM at the Patriot League Meet, and Speicher, third place in the 400 at the Patriot League meet, return as key competitors for Navy one more time. They will be joined by Bockus third in the 400 and 14th in the 200 at the Patriot League Meet; 17th in the 400 at EISL Championship Jones, Kysiak and Mizelle. Our potential in this event is motivating, said Roberts. We have two excellent leaders for this event in Chris Speicher and Brian DeMell. They will be supported and pushed by a strong team of IM ers this season. Nearly every swimmer can swim the IM if called up. Expect to see some new people begin to develop a name for themselves in the IM in DIVING After finishing last season as one of the top freshman divers in the country, Kevin Teague returns for his sophomore season looking for even bigger things. Teague won both boards at the Patriot League Meet and placed first on the three meter and fourth on the one meter at the EISL Championship. He would go on to compete in three events at the NCAA Championship, placing 22nd on both the one-meter springboard and 10-meter platform. Also returning for Navy is Joe Reardon, who scored on both boards at both league championships last year. They will be joined by newcomers Grant Gehrke, Adam Niekras and Zach Templin to provide key depth for diving coach Joe Suriano. All Midshipmen undertake professional military training, including classroom studies, drills and practical training.

21 COACHING HISTORY 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 21 Henry Ortland Jr (.589) John Higgins (.606) Lee Lawrence (.626) Bill Roberts 2004-pres. 8-9 (.470) NAVY MEN S SWIMMING COACHING HISTORY Upon the 2003 retirement of 23-year head coach Lee Lawrence, former assistant coach Bill Roberts was named to guide the Navy men s swimming program. He became only the fourth head coach in the program s 83-year history. The program began in the early 1920 s under the guidance of Henry Ortland Jr. Ortland served as head coach for the program s initial 29 seasons, posting a record (.589). It was during his tenture that the Midshipmen began their affiliation with the Eastern Intercolleguate Swimming League, an association which still continues today. Ortland stepped down after the conclusion of the season, with John Higgins tabbed top to follow in his footsteps. Higgins, an accomplished swimmer himself who competed in the 1936 Olympics and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1971, compiled a record (.606) in his 23 seasons as the Navy mentor. At the conclusion of the season, assistant coach Lee Lawrence was elevated to head coach and took the reigns of the program from Higgins. Lawrence s team failed to post a winning season just seven times under his leadership, which came to a close with his retirement in 2003 with a overall record (.626). Upon Lawrence s retirement, Navy turned to former assistant coach Bill Roberts to guide the program. The Lawrence-Roberts tandem guided the program to a record in their three seasons together during the late 1990 s. Roberts made an immediate impact on the program last season during his first year as head coach, leading the Mids to a Patriot League title and returning Navy to the NCAA Championship for the first time in eight years. 30 30 : 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft laid the foundation for the Naval Academy when, in 1845, he established the Naval School at Fort Severn in Annapolis. Commander Franklin Buchanan served as the first Superintendent. His faculty consisted of four officers and three civilian professors. There were 50 students. Initially, the academic and professional instruction required five years the first and last at Annapolis, with the intervening three at sea. In 1850, the Naval School became the United States Naval Academy. The following year, the Academy adopted its current course of instruction which includes four consecutive years at Annapolis, with at-sea training provided during the summers. The Naval Academy moved to Newport, R.I., during the Civil War. In 1865, it was re-established at Annapolis under the leadership of Vice Admiral David Dixon Porter. During these early years, the Academy was one of the few institutions of higher learning offering a sophisticated undergraduate course in technical education. The late 19th century saw immense changes in naval technology with the conversion from sail-powered, wooden ships to steam-powered vessels of steel, which also resulted in rapid developments in naval weaponry and tactics. With the Spanish-American War in 1898, the United States became a world naval power, and early Naval Academy graduates like George Dewey and Alfred Thayer Mahan made significant contributions to our national heritage. The new century saw the nation s undergraduate naval college grow in size and academic prowess. The Class of 1895 had produced 41 graduates. By World War I, there were nearly 200 graduates each year, along with 2,500 reserve officers who received their training at the Academy. With the entry of the United States into World War I, courses were shortened to three years, a program which remained in effect until Between the two world wars, the curriculum and training equipment were modernized to keep pace with rapid advances in the naval profession and American education. In 1930, the Association of American Universities accredited the Naval Academy, and in 1933, an act of Congress authorized the Naval Academy to confer the degree of bachelor of science on graduates, beginning with the Class of Congress authorized award of the degree to all living graduates in The Middle Atlantic States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools first accredited the Academy in During World War II, summer sessions were instituted and the course was again shortened to three years. As during World War I, reserve officers, along with reserve midshipmen, also trained at the Academy. In 1963, the Academy initiated the Trident Scholar Program, under which a number of exceptional students are permitted to pursue independent research during the first class (senior) year. The academic year saw the civilian positions of academic dean and dean of admissions established and far-reaching changes made to the curriculum. The number of required core courses was reduced and, for the first time, each midshipman was allowed to pursue academic areas of individual interest for minor or major. Additional changes, introduced in the academic year, now require every midshipman to complete a major. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed legislation authorizing admission of women to the service academies. The first women midshipmen entered the Academy in July 1976 and graduated with the Class of Vice Adm. Rodney P. Rempt, USN Superintendent Chet Gladchuk Director of Athletics Navy s 200 and 400 free relay teams earned Honorable Mention All-America honors last year.

31 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 31 Naval Academy Traditions ANCHORS AWEIGH "Anchors Aweigh" was written by Lt. Charles Zimmermann, Musical Director of the Naval Academy in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles of the Class of 1906, as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class instead of the usual class march Zimmermann had composed for previous classes. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy football game, and when the Midshipmen won the game, the song became traditional at this game. It gained national exposure in the 1920s and 1930s when it was heard on the radio and was in a number of popular movies. In 1997 a one-hour documentary on the history of Navy football, titled "Anchors Aweigh for Honor and Glory", was produced by NFL Films.The film was deemed a success by both critics and fans alike. ANNAPOLIS The capital of Maryland, Annapolis is the home of the Naval Academy. Annapolis is located 30 miles east of Washington, D.C. and 25 miles south of Baltimore. BANCROFT HALL Named after former Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Hall is home for the entire Brigade of Midshipmen. It contains 1,873 midshipmen rooms, nearly five miles of corridors and about 33 acres of floor space, making it one of the largest single dormitories in the world. All of the basic facilities midshipmen need for daily living, and many for recreation, are found in the Hall. BAND The Navy's oldest continuing musical organization, the Naval Academy Band was formed in 1852 with 13 musicians. Now numbering 63 members, the band includes the wind ensembles, rock band, big band, woodwind and brass quintets, tuba and trombone quartets and the percussion ensemble.the band provides musical support to the Brigade of Midshipmen in parades and performances, and entertains members of the Academy family and civilian community throughout the year. CO-ED For many years, the Naval Academy was a male-only institution. But that changed when women were admitted in Today, 15 percent of the 4,000-member Brigade are women. The Class of 1890 first used Navy Blue and Gold. In 1892, the minutes from the Naval Academy Auxiliary Athletic Association meeting reported, "The Committee reported favorable results of a conference with Naval Cadets as to the probability of adoption of Navy Blue and Gold as Academy colors." NICKNAME Navy's sports teams are referred to as the Midshipmen or Mids. The term "Middie" is inappropriate. BILL THE GOAT The first recorded use of a goat mascot for Navy athletic teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (The Chief) was turned over to the Brigade by young officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 triumph over Army that year.two cats, a dog, and a carrier pigeon have also enjoyed brief reigns as the Navy mascot, but goats have served without interruption since Bill XXX is the 33rd goat mascot for the Academy and the 29th to carry the name Bill. He is taken care of by 15 goathandlers made up of five midshipmen from the first, second and third classes. The goathandlers undergo rigorous training prior to handling Bill on the field. The first recorded use of a goat mascot for Navy athletic teams was in 1893.

32 32 : 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING MIDSHIPMEN LIFE It all begins with fourth class year. From their first day at the Academy, the fourth class midshipmen, or plebes, undergo an intensive and unabated program of military training and indoctrination. Physical and mental demands on them and their time seem never-ending. But it all has a purpose: the development of leadership ability, motivation, moral strength, physical skills and stamina. Plebe Summer is a time which most midshipmen will remember for many years. New midshipmen are kept constantly busy learning basic skills in seamanship, navigation and marksmanship. Their pride and company spirit are boosted through infantry drill, small arms training, sailing Navy yawls and cruising in yard patrol craft. Their competitive spirit and desire to win are developed in activities such as athletics, dress parades and seamanship. Plebe Summer is highlighted in August during Parents Weekend, when parents visit the Academy and witness the progress of their sons and daughters. The arrival of the upperclassmen in mid-august heralds the beginning of the academic year. The plebes embark on a four-year course of study while plebe indoctrination continues. September brings the excitement of football and other fall sports. During the football season, only selected units of the brigade travel to away games, but the entire brigade attends all home games and the annual fall classic, the Army-Navy game. Commissioning Week, in May, brings the graduation of the first classmen and the end of plebe year. Plebes signify the end of the first year at the Academy by scaling the smooth granite sides of Herndon Monument to replace, at its summit, a plebe cap with an upperclass cover. Between plebe and third class years, midshipmen get their first taste of life at sea and their introduction to the enlisted men whom they will lead when commissioned as officers. Joining ships around the world, midshipmen perform a host of shipboard duties including standing deck, gunnery, operations and engineering watches. Midshipmen also have their first opportunity to visit foreign countries and experience different cultures. Third classmen begin work in their academic majors and assume more responsibility in the military regimen at the Academy. Less emphasis is placed on indoctrination, leaving more time for studies, sports and extracurricular activities. It s a welcome change from the rigors of plebe year. During their third summer, midshipmen get their first training in four warfare specialties which comprise the naval service. They learn about submarines at New London, Conn.; surface warfare at Norfolk,Va.; naval aviation at Pensacola, Fla.; and the Marine Corps at Quantico,Va. Second class midshipmen are assigned still additional military responsibilities. They are selected and trained to direct the Brigade of Midshipmen during absences of the first class. They are also assigned an important role in indoctrination of the new plebe class, which develops their leadership skills. In academics, the second class midshipmen enter increasingly advanced areas of study. During their final year at the Academy, first class midshipmen complete the core curriculum and their academic majors course requirements. Many undertake independent research projects, and some begin graduate-level studies at nearby universities. The first class midshipmen also take over the responsibilities for plebe indoctrination.they also lead the brigade at parades, formal ceremonies and daily formations. They are responsible for the conduct, military smartness and competitive records of their units. The skills which the first class midshipmen develop this year will help them when they assume their leadership responsibilities in the Navy and Marine Corps following graduation. One common denominator which binds the four years into a unit which will forever shape the life of an Academy graduate is the Honor Concept. Established and administered by midshipmen, the Honor Concept is based on the principle that honorable individuals do not lie, cheat or steal. All midshipmen are expected to conduct their lives in accordance with the Honor Concept so that their decisions as midshipmen, naval officers and civilians reflect the highest levels of honorable conduct. THE CURRICULUM With the aid of academic and military advisors, midshipmen design their own blend of the curriculum s three elements: Courses providing the professional and leadership skills required in the naval service. Core requirements in engineering, social sciences, natural sciences and the humanities to ensure breadth in education. Completion of a major program in an academic subject chosen by each midshipman to develop individual interests and talents in depth. The Naval Academy offers major programs in 18 subject areas: eight in engineering; six in sciences and mathematics, including computer science; and four in the humanities and social sciences. Seven of the engineering majors are accredited professionally by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology. Selected humanities and social science majors with excellent records are invited to enter the rigorous honors programs offered by the departments of Economics, English, History and Political Science. Outstanding students also have the opportunity to engage in independent study and research during their senior year. Those selected as Trident Scholars carry a reduced formal course load so they can pursue a major research project and prepare a thesis. They are assisted by one or more faculty advisors who specialize in the field of study. A number of first class midshipmen who complete academic requirements early are encouraged to enroll in graduate classes at area universities. This Voluntary Graduate Education Program gives them the chance to graduate and receive commissions with their classmates, finish their graduate studies locally and then go to their first assignments with a master s degree. Commissioning Week consists of six days of parades, ceremonies and receptions to bring to an end four years of training.

33 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING : 33 All midshipmen undertake professional military training, beginning on the first day of Plebe Summer and continuing through first class year. This includes classroom studies, drills and practical training at the Naval Academy and with Navy and Marine Corps units during summer programs. Navigation, seamanship, tactics, naval engineering, weapons, leadership and military law are among the areas studied. To advance and graduate, midshipmen must pass professional competency examinations covering general knowledge and subjects related to their service selection. The Naval Academy s physical education program complements academic and professional development of midshipmen. Instruction and training aim to develop individual skills and competitive spirit, lifelong habits of physical fitness, and the capability to withstand physical hardship when necessary. All midshipmen must complete the four-year program which includes the Physical Readiness Test (twice annually), water survival, physical development, personal defense and lifetime carryover sports. Women participate in the same curriculum, including boxing, wrestling and judo. In May, Commissioning Week begins the graduation of first classmen and the end of plebe year. Plebes signify the end of the first year at the Academy by scaling the smooth granite sides of Herndon Monument to replace, at its summit, a plebe cap with an upperclass cover. The Blue Angels perform each year at the Naval Academy during Commissioning Week. Since 1946, when the squadron was formed, the team has flown for more than 337 million people around the world. COMMISSIONING WEEK Six days of parades, athletic events, colorful ceremonies, formal dances and receptions bring to a climax four years of challenging education and training. One highlight of Commissioning Week is Color Parade. Each year, intra-brigade competition is conducted to determine which of the 30 companies stands highest overall on the basis of academics, intramural sports, professional drills and parade performance. During the parade, the color girl, who is selected by the Color Company commander, transfer the flags from the past Color Company to the new one. The biggest social event of Commissioning Week is the ring dance for the second class midshipmen. An elegant formal affair, it is at this event that the midshipmen begin wearing their class rings. First class midshipmen and their families attend the superintendent's garden party and reception, plus other social events. Athletic, academic and professional awards are presented in Alumni Hall. The evening before graduation, everyone is invited to attend the farewell ball. On graduation day, friends and relatives gather with the midshipmen at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. After the diplomas are presented and the oath of office is administered, the senior midshipman of the new first class leads three cheers for "those about to leave us." The graduates, led by the class president, reply with three cheers for "those we leave behind." On the last hooray of this cheer, the 1,000 graduates toss their midshipmen covers into the air. According to tradition, the honor of putting on the new Navy Ensign and Marine Corps Second Lieutenant shoulder devices is shared by mothers and Commissioning Week dates. The Blue Angels perform annually at Navy during Commissioning Week.

34 34 : 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING JOHN HIGGINS John Higgins, head coach of the Navy men s swimming team from and a twice-inducted member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, passed away this summer in Annapolis at the age of 88 due to pneumonia. Born May 8, 1916, in Providence, R.I., Higgins placed fourth in the breaststroke for the United States at the 1936 Olympics while still in high school. He would go on to earn All-America status in the breaststroke from and win the 1940 NCAA 200-yard butterfly title as a student-athlete at Ohio State. At one time he held 10 world and 21 American swimming records and once broke five world records in a single meet. Later in life he would go on to win 18 national titles on the masters swimming level. After graduating from Ohio State in 1940, Higgins enlisted in the Navy and served as a flight instructor in Pensacola, Fla., before reporting to sea duty on aircraft carriers and at naval air stations. He served on active duty from before entering the reserves with the rank of commander. Higgins was assigned to the Naval Academy in the summer of 1950 as the director of aquatics and as the coach of the swimming program, eventually becoming a civilian instructor and associate professor in His Naval Academy teams compiled a record in his 23- year stint as head coach. His squads combined to post a 36-6 record, with his 1961 team being the most successful team he coached at Navy. The Mids that year posted a 13-1 mark and tied Yale for the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League title with a 7-1 league record. Among the Navy victories that season was a triumph over Yale that ended the Bulldogs 16-year, 201-straight dual-meet winning streak. The EISL championship meet began the following season and Navy swimmers and divers totaled 16 individual titles over the remainder of Higgins tenure. After his final season as coach of the team, he would serve as Navy s director of aquatics for another decade until his retirement from the Naval Academy. During this time he would help design Lejeune Hall, the present-day home for the Navy swimming and wrestling teams, as well as continue to serve as a swimming instructor. In addition to sending Naval Academy swimmers and divers to the Olympics and other national and international competitions, Higgins himself frequently served as a coach for the United States in international meets and for the U.S. Armed Forces at various world military games. Higgins was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as a swimmer in 1971 and as a coach the following year. He also was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage and Aquatics Hall of Fame, the Ohio State University Sports Hall of Fame, and the Maryland Swimming Hall of Fame. Most recently, Higgins attended and was recognized at the 2002 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championship held in Lejeune Hall. His wife, Betts, who passed away in 1993, was one of the founders of the wedding hostesses program at the Naval Academy Chapel. Higgins is survived by a son, John H. Higgins III of Winter Park, Fla., a daughter, Joan Graham of Annapolis, four grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Noah White competed in three events at the 2004 Olympic Trials.

Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education. The Patriot League began as a successful Division I-AA football conference in Full League members include American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy. Associate members include Fairfield (field hockey), Fordham (football), Georgetown (football), Hobart (men s lacrosse),towson (football) and Villanova (women s lacrosse). These member institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation. Alumni from Patriot League colleges and universities have played a leadership role in the shaping of our country. In the classroom, the league s full-member institutions, individually and collectively, consistently rank among the top Division I programs in the NCAA Graduation Rates Report. In a recent report on NCAA Graduation Rates, the Patriot League ranked first among all Division I conferences in student-athlete graduation rates and second in overall student graduation rates. League members have also distinguished themselves on the field of play. Patriot League sponsors championship competition in 22 sports (11 for men; 11 for women). Championship teams from 14 sports are guaranteed advancement into the NCAA Championships or CCA play-in championships: baseball, men s and women s basketball, field hockey, football, golf, men s and women s lacrosse, men s and women s soccer, softball, men s and women s tennis and volleyball. In 12 seasons, 137 teams have been selected for post-season play in the NCAA, ECAC or National Invitational tournaments.the league also boasts 58 student-athletes who have qualified for NCAA Championships, the pinnacle of collegiate individual competition. A total of 155 Patriot League student-athletes have earned All-America honors. Over the past four years, 73 of the Patriot League s 88 Scholar- Athletes of the Year also received all-league status for their exemplary athletic performance. Additionally, 23 of the scholar-athletes honored were named Players of the Year or Performers of the Meet in their respective sport. In 12 years, 103 Patriot League student-athletes have been recognized as Verizon Academic All-Americans, while nearly 8,000 more have qualified for the league s Academic Honor Roll by accumulating a 3.2 gradepoint average and earning a varsity letter.twenty student-athletes representing seven institutions have received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. Additionally, Patriot League student-athletes have earned two Fulbright Scholarships, a Luce Foundation Scholarship, a Marshall Scholarship, two NACDA/Disney Scholarships and three National Football Foundation Scholarships among their many accomplishments. THE EISL The Navy men s swimming and diving program will once again continue its longstanding affiliation with the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League this season. Founded at the start of the season, the EISL is comprised of Army, Navy and the eight-members of the Ivy League Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale. The EISL began its first season by having round-robin competition between the members, with the first league team championship held in the spring of Long recognized as one of the premier collegiate swimming leagues on the East Coast, EISL-member schools have won four NCAA team titles, well over 100 NCAA event championships and nearly 50 Olympic medals. Navy swimmers and divers have captured 42 EISL titles over the years, including Kevin Teague in three-meter diving and Navy s 400 freestyle relay team in Navy athletes won 12 Patriot League and two EISL titles last year.

36 36 : 2004 NAVY MEN S SWIMMING AND DIVING LEJEUNE HALL Lt. General John Archer Lejeune, USMC Navy s swimming and wrestling complex is named after the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corp and an 1888 graduate of the Naval Academy. He served more than 45 years in uniform, fought in World War I and completed nearly three terms as Commandant of the Marine Corps until his retirement in Lejeune Hall Opened in 1982 at a cost of $13.5 million, it was the first building at the Academy to be named for a Marine Corps officer. LIGHTING The pools are illuminated with bright overhead lights that provide 100-foot candle power at water surface. The large sky-lights supplement lighting and add to the aesthetic beauty of Lejeune Hall. POOL The large pool is 25-meters-by-50-meters with an eight-foot depth. A movable bulkhead enables Navy s teams to train at any distance. The pool provides meter short course lanes or meter long course lanes. DIVING The diving pool is 60-by-52 feet with depths varying from feet. Diving equipment consists of two one-meter maxi-cheese boards, two three-meter platforms and a diving tower with one, five, seven and a half and 10- meter platforms. There is a powerful bubbler system under each level and a trampoline-dry land board port-a-pit spotting apparatus located on the pool deck to assist in training. In addition, the diving wall has three underwater observation windows. SEATING AREA The gallery around the pool seats 1,000 spectators in comfortable armchair seats. Although the building is completely modern in conception and materials, its regularly placed columns and raised roof area compliment the traditional turn of the century French Renaissance style campus with its vocabulary of granite walls and mansard roofs. TIMING SCOREBOARD The Colorado Time Systems scoreboard and timing system is the most up-to-date automatic system in the world. The system determines elapsed time, order of finish and lap splits for each competitive lane to a thousandth of a second. The system records the results and transmits them to the scoreboard. The diving pool is equipped with a judges system that displays the awards, stores 11 dives for up to 99 divers, handles the addition and multiplication to compute degrees of difficulty, show the leading diver and flash if the current diver takes the lead. COMPETITORS FACILITIES Facilities for athletes include separate entrances, locker rooms, showers, three saunas, a large classroom, team locker rooms and a fully-equipped first aid/training room. I believe it to be almost universally accepted as sound policy that the cultivation of athletics in a military organization is extremely beneficial to the personnel from the standpoint both of improved physique and improved morale. -- John A.
