Notre Dame sent seven swimmers and one diver to the title meet in At their inaugural ACC Championship meet, Notre Dame broke 15 school records and claimed four first-team all-acc accolades. Stephens earned three of the four in recognition of his first place swims in the 100 and 200 breast, in addition to his runner-up finish in the 200 IM. While he was the only diver to compete at the NCAA Championships last year, sophomore Joe Coumos is merely one man on a talented six-man diving squad. Former BIG EAST Divers of the Year Michael Kreft and Nick Nemetz as well as Ted Wagner, classmate James Lichtenstein and freshman Peter Myers join him. First year head coach Matt Tallman s nine-man freshman roster boasts three state record holders Joe Krause (Michigan, 100 free as a member of 400 free relay team), Richard Mannix (New York, 200 and 400 free relay) and Justin Plaschka (New York, 100 free and 200 IM). Sophomore Tom Anderson heads into ready to make an immediate impact in the pool for the Irish. Anderson was one of seven swimmers at the NCAA meet in 14, helping the 200 free relay squad claim 26th place (1:20.93) and the 800 free relay team finish 19th (6:26.18). Tallman has a talented pair of juniors in Matthew Buerger and Bogac Ayhan, both of whom led their 200 medley relay teams to the ACC Championships. Buerger went on to swim at the NCAA Championships with the 400 medley relay team, while Ayhan s 200 medley relay squad placed fifth at the ACC championship (1:25.46). Notre Dame returned from fall break well rested and eager to put into play what they learned over two training trips. The divers traveled south to Atlanta, Georgia, practicing at Georgia Tech s Aquatic Pavilion for four days, while the swimmers headed west to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to train for nine days at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Women s Update The Irish enter today s dual meet with a 2-3 record after going 1-3 in their venture south two weeks ago. They bested Vanderbilt, but fell to Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Auburn. While still very early in the season, senior Emma Reaney sits No. 2 in the ACC in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.78) and No. 3 in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.57). Last year, Reaney won the ACC Championship in both events, turning in times of in the 100 and 2:04.34 in the 200. Her time in the 200 was an NCAA and American record, a mark she broke a month later at the NCAA Championships. The divers have gotten off to a quick start to the season, as senior Allison Casareto and juniors Emma Gaboury and Lindsey Streepey have all locked up spots at March s NCAA Zone C meet. Last week, Casareto won the 1-meter dive at Auburn in her first meet of the year and was followed closely by Streepey and Gaboury. Gaboury also took second on the 3-meter board against the Tigers and Vanderbilt. Sophomore Catherine Mulquin is looking to make her way back to the NCAA meet during her second campaign and has shown early promise by winning the 100 back and 50 free at Auburn. She also placed second in the 100 free. After missing the spring semester following double hip surgery, junior Catherine Galletti proved she was back during the first meet of the season. Against Michigan State, she claimed the 50 free title and also placed second in the 100 free. As a freshman in , Galletti won BIG EAST titles in the 200 and 400 medley relays. The school record holder in the 200 fly, senior Bridget Casey won the event at Auburn in 2: Notre Dame s busy November continues next weekend, as the Irish welcome in ACC foes Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech to Rolfs Aquatic Center. Friday s action gets underway at 5 p.m., while Saturday s session will begin at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast on WatchND.
