All children younger than three years old must be accompanied by an adult (one child per adult), unless otherwise specified. Space is limited so register early! Registration begins Monday, March 5. Songs, simple stories, and other activities that introduce our youngest patrons to the pleasures of the library. Registration required. Bring your favorite book and practice your reading skills with Max, our certified therapy dog (he is a very good listener!). Registration required. Saturdays, March 17 and April 7 1 p.m. POKÉMON CLUB Ages 7 to 17. Bring your own cards and battle it out with your friends, bring your DS and play our games, or use our wifi to play online, share books, games, and all things Pokémon. We ll also be planning activities with the Pokémon GO! App. Everyone ages 7 to 17 is welcome, from those just starting to collect to those who compete in a league. Mondays, March 12 and 26; April 9 and 23 5:30-7:30 p.m. READ ACROSS AMERICA DR. SEUSS STORYTIME* Ages 0-6. Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2 Dr. Seuss s birthday. Join us for a special storytime and enjoy silly Seuss games, crafts, and eat birthday cake! Registration required beginning Monday, February 5. Friday, March a.m. and 1-2 p.m. THE MUSIC LADY: BEVERLY MEYER All ages welcome. The Music Lady's first CD is turning 20, so we are having a party!! The event is free and fun for the whole family. Please arrive by 1:40, the performance will be filmed and we will need photo releases. No registration required. Sunday, March 18 2 p.m. CELEBRATION OF KITES* Ages Learn about and make fun, animal-shaped indoor kites. Find out about delta-wing, diamond, par foil, and other outdoor kites while making your own. Materials and instructional handouts will be provided. Weather permitting, we'll go outside and fly them! Registration required beginning Saturday, April 7. Saturday, April p.m. MONEY SMART WEEK STORYTIME* Ages 3-6. Join us for a money-related storytime. All children will decorate and take home their very own bank and receive a copy of the book Lots and Lots of Coins. Registration required beginning April 10. Saturday, April a.m. STAR WARS CRAFT FUN* Ages Have fun with other Star Wars fans while making your own glowing toy light saber and felt finger puppets. Learn about all of the Star Wars movies (knowledge of the books and movies welcome, but not required) and play games! Dress as your favorite character if you like. Registration required beginning Saturday, February 17. Saturday, March 3 1 p.m. SCAVENGER HUNTS All ages welcome. Can you find all of the special characters hidden across the children s room? Find all 6 of them, tell a librarian, and get a sticker or bookmark to take home! March Hunt: Dr Seuss April Hunt: Peter Rabbit THE GAME OF MONEY* Grades 4-8. Learn the ins and outs of earning, spending, and saving money. Presented by Zeal Credit Union. Registration required beginning April 14. Saturday, April 28 1 p.m BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN* It s easy to participate in this FREE program which encourages parents to read 1,000 books with their Preschoolers. Mark off the books you have read on your reading log. When you reach 100, show us your log to receive your prize and your new reading log. As children reach their milestones, their names will be displayed in the Livonia Public Libraries on our walls of fame. Come in and sign up today! You will get your log when you register, or you can download the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten iphone App. *Registration required. 4 Teen Programs TEEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE Join our Teen Advisory Committee and offer input to Teen Service Librarians on our Teen collections and programs. Enjoy snacks, meet other like-minded Teens, gain valuable organizational experience and leadership skills, and fulfill various community service obligations. Interested Teens can come to our meetings at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month in the Bennett Civic Center Branch meeting rooms. Volunteer credits available. *Please note the April meeting is on April 12, the second Thursday of the month. Our annual drawing contest is here! The categories for entries are manga and non-manga. Submissions accepted in person or by at bignotti@livoniapubliclibrary.org or nlomas@livoniapubliclibrary.org Entries must be submitted by Monday, April 30 at 9 p.m. Entries will be judged by the Teen Advisory Committee at their meeting on May 3. Same rules apply for the Photography contest only 2 submissions per person per category. Categories are black and white and color. April 2-30 WRITER S CONTEST Grades 7 to 12. Are you a budding novelist? Share your original story, poem, essay, fan fiction, or novel with the Teen Advisory Committee and possibly win a prize! Entries must be turned in by March 29, HARRY POTTER CLUB Recommended for ages 11 and up Did you know the library has its own Harry Potter Club that meets every Thursday to enjoy crafts, activities, and trivia about Harry Potter? Come and get sorted to sit with your house. We meet Thursdays from 5-6 p.m. in the meeting rooms at the Bennett Civic Center Library. Wednesday, March 14 livoniapubliclibrary.org/adultservices RAIN GARDENS Rain gardens are beautiful, functional garden areas that filter storm water, minimize soil erosion, and provide habitat for wildlife. Drew Lathin of Sustainable Landscapes will explore the benefits of rain gardens and teach participants how to design and build their own. No registration required. Supplies provided, but feel free to bring your own. Tuesdays, March 6 and April 10 6:30-8 p.m. MICHIGAN CAMPAIGN FINANCE: WHO IS PAYING FOR WHAT? Craig Mauger, the director of The Michigan Campaign Finance Network, will provide information on how campaign finance works in Michigan. His presentation will include how to identify dark-money funded campaign mailers and advertisements, and how to find out who's funding a TV Ad. HISTORY LIVES: DON HAFFNER, MUHKO MEMORIES The Peace Corps began under the administration of John F Kennedy. From its inception the goal was to send American volunteers to areas of the world in need. Thousands of Americans answered the call to this global service Don Haffner was one of them. He taught English in South Korea from and will share his personal experiences along with providing a history of this prominent and effective organization. Monday March 19 WOVEN WASHER NECKLACES* Join us for a tutorial on making woven washer necklaces. These chic necklaces are easy to make and super cute! Author Jon Milan will take the audience back to US-16 s beginnings and follow it throughout its history. Monday, April 16 FINANCIAL SCRAPBOOKING* Learn how to create a financial scrapbook a consolidation of your financial presence in a single location to help you and/or your loved ones understand your financial situation for planning purposes and in emergency situations. Wednesday, April 25 HISTORY LIVES: HIDDEN FACTS ABOUT THE TITANIC AND THE MAKING OF THE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE The Titanic s time in the public eye has ebbed and flowed since its foundering, most recently resurrected in James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster movie. Plan to attend this program as Pam Craig and Judi Kulchar discuss a multitude of aspects of the disaster and the making of Cameron's film. Monday April 30 COMPUTER INSTRUCTION Our staff can assist you with computer and ereader basics. E-READER INSTRUCTION* We provide one-on-one instruction on using your tablet/ nook/kindle/ipad to checkout and download books from our ebook collections. This service is for Livonia residents only since you need to have a valid Livonia library card to check out our ebooks. By appointment only AWESOME OATS* Participants will make one dozen peanut butter & chocolate chip oatmeal energy balls and one serving of overnight oats (choice of mocha, peanut butter banana, or strawberries and cream). 8 Noontime Concert Series Join us every month for a special concert that will entertain audiences of all ages. All concerts take place in the Bennett Civic Center Library Atrium, begin at 12:15 p.m., and are free to attend. Bring your brown bag lunch and enjoy the show.
