2 University News By Charles Martin A Giant Battle Auburn canines help in search for Everglades' pythons The scenario sounds like a low-budget movie from the 1970s: Humongous snakes are on the loose, eating everything in sight. But this is real a problem that Auburn University and its canines are helping to combat. Auburn researchers used detection dogs in the Everglades National Park to find Burmese pythons during a study on ways to manage and eradicate these nonnative, invasive snakes, which are eating native wildlife, mostly mammals and birds. The ultimate use for detection dogs is to suppress the expanding python population and to eliminate them in small areas, such as on an island. Our main concern is their impact on other wildlife, said Christina Romagosa of Auburn s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. Interaction with humans is also a problem. The snakes, like alligators, can get in swimming pools, eat small dogs and cats, and could injure a human. Auburn worked last year with the Everglades Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area, or ECISMA, to test how well dogs could pinpoint the snakes locations so wildlife agencies could remove the snakes. The problem started years ago, most likely by irresponsible python owners, Romagosa says. The first Burmese python was spotted in Florida in 1979 and the number is now estimated in the tens of thousands. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in January made it illegal to import Burmese pythons or transport them across state lines. Irresponsible people released these snakes because they became too large and difficult to care for, she said. Now they have reproduced many times over, Romagosa said. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 probably didn t help when a warehouse containing pythons was destroyed. The Army Corps of Engineers contacted Auburn s EcoDogs program in 2010 about the possibility of using dogs to help find the pythons, which led to the pilot study funded by the National Park Service s Everglades National Park, South Florida Water Management District and Auburn s Center for Forest Sustainability. EcoDogs is a collaborative project between the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine s Animal Health and Performance Program, where the dogs are trained and maintained. Canines Jake and Ivy, both black Labrador retrievers, helped the researchers capture 19 pythons, most being 6 to 8 feet in length, including a pregnant one with 19 viable eggs. Burmese pythons in their native range in Southeast Asia have been known to reach up to 20 feet and weigh almost 200 pounds. The National Park Service has counted 1,825 Burmese pythons that have been caught in and around Everglades National Park since Prior to going to the Everglades, Jake and Ivy trained six months with Craig Angle, associate director of the Metcalf Veterinary Sports Medicine Program in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and trainers Terry Fischer and Bart Rogers, who taught the dogs to pinpoint the odor of Burmese pythons. Interestingly, the Labrador retrievers, which love to get wet, had to be trained not to go into the water. They love the water but in the training we reward them for staying out of it, Rogers said. We could train them to find pythons in water, but we are limited in that we couldn t easily capture pythons if they are under water. 3 Know your N ewb By Kelsie Franklin Jay Prosch Q: Where s the furthest you ve been from home and why were you there? JP: The furthest from home I ve ever been is Vermont. I was traveling there because we have a house there and we go there every summer. Q: What is something you miss about home? JP: My friends and family. A bunch of my friends stayed home in Mobile, so every time I go home it s like a friendship reunion. Q: Who has impacted you the most in your life thus far? JP: My mom. Growing up I always looked up to her, and the things that she s taught me have made me who I am. Q: What do you like to do in your free time outside of football? JP: When I have free time my favorite thing to do is fish, and when it s hunting season I go hunting too. I also like to play video games and just relax. Q: If you could play a position other than fullback, what would it be and why? JP: I played linebacker my senior year of high school and I loved it. I would love to go back to those days and play some more linebacker. Q: Did you play any other sports as a kid? Why did you stick with football? JP: When I was really young I played soccer and baseball, and in high school it was just football and track. I stuck with football because it was the only one I was really good at. Q: What s your favorite professional football team and why? JP: That s tough. I don t really have a favorite. Q: What would you say is your biggest fear? JP: Sharks. That s it. The thought of being in the water and not knowing what s approaching me isn t ok. Q: What s the biggest accomplishment you ve made so far? JP: Playing college football. That was always my dream in high school. Q: Who would you say is your celebrity crush? JP: Probably Angelina Jolie, Jessica Alba for sure. Q: What s the most spontaneous thing you ve ever done? JP: When I was in Illinois we had a small break, and I just decided to drive home to Mobile. I packed a small bag with a few clothes and hit the road. Q: What have you enjoyed the most about Auburn since arriving on campus? JP: Probably being back in Alabama and running into people I know on campus. It s nice not feeling like I m in a completely different world. I love the Auburn family and the atmosphere. Q: If you could change any rule in college football, what would it be? JP: I would say the only rule I would like to change is being able to pitch the ball forward. That would be awesome if you could. 163

Boosters The NCAA defines a booster as anyone who has done any of the following: Made any type of donation to the Auburn University Athletics Department and/or a specific sport program, including purchasing game tickets through our priority ticket system. Helped arrange employment for any enrolled student-athlete, prospective student-athlete, or their parents or relatives. Assisted in the recruitment of any prospective student-athlete. Graduated from Auburn University. Promoted the athletics department in any other manner. Some examples of boosters are: fans, undergraduate students, graduate staff, and other employees and alumni. Benefits for Student- Athletes It is impermissible for any prospects, studentathletes, their relatives or friends to receive any extra benefits or special arrangements. Examples of extra benefits that you cannot provide include, but are not limited to: Cash or loan in any amount. Cosigning or arranging a loan. Providing gifts of any kind (e.g. clothing, airline tickets, or cards). Providing special discount for goods or services. Use of an automobile. Recruiting Contacts A prospect is any student who has started classes in the ninth grade (or seventh grade, for men s basketball). Do not telephone, write (including chat rooms, instant messaging, and s) with a prospect for the purpose of soliciting his/her participation in Auburn University s athletic program. Always Remember Do not friend request, message, or create groups on social networking websites (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, etc.) for the purpose of soliciting a prospect s participation in Auburn University s athletic program. Do not become directly or indirectly involved in making arrangements for a prospect, the prospect s relatives, or friends to receive money or financial aid of any kind. Do not provide transportation to prospects, including transportation to campus to attend athletic events. Do not provide free or reduced-cost tickets to any Auburn University event, home or away, to prospects, their relatives, or friends. Do not contact a prospect s coach, principal, or counselor in an effort to evaluate the prospect. Do not visit the prospect s institution to pick up film or transcripts that pertain to a prospect s academic or athletic eligibility. Do not make special arrangements for 166

5 Compliance entertainment during the recruiting process. Do not pay in whole or part the fees that are associated with any sports camps. Do feel free to attend sporting events where the prospects are participating. You must, however, avoid any conversation with the prospect or the prospect s legal guardians or relatives. Do inform Auburn University coaches of prospects in your area by contacting the appropriate coach. You may also send newspaper clippings or Internet articles about prospects to the coaching staff. Agents In order to protect our student-athletes from loss of eligibility due to agent activities, the following policies and procedures will be followed: Agents must be registered with the State of Alabama s Office of the Secretary of State ( and Auburn University s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Failure to register with the State shall result in the involved agent s loss of registration status and may result in criminal charges. An agent cannot have any in-person contact with a student-athlete (or his/her parents or legal guardian) prior to the completion of the student-athlete s senior competitive season unless approved and arranged by the Athletic Director (or designee). No Athletics Department staff member shall have any in-person contact or telephone communication with agents and/or financial advisors, or their representatives, on behalf of, or to discuss any, current studentathletes unless prior approval has been provided by the Athletic Director (or designee). In addition, a head coach in a sport may contact agents, professional sports teams, or professional sports organizations on behalf of a student-athlete provided no compensation is received for such services (NCAA Bylaws and ). Agents may not travel or be included as guests in any activities in which studentathletes are present. Agents may purchase tickets to athletic events in the same manner as any other member of the general public. In order to enforce this provision, guest lists will be reviewed by the Compliance Office. The institution shall not issue to a sports agent regular season or postseason game credentials in any sport that provides the individual with access to the sideline, locker rooms, or any area where contact with student-athletes may be possible (SEC Bylaw ). Penalties Once it is determined that a student-athlete (parent, guardian, or friends) has accepted any benefit (e.g., meals, tickets, gifts, money, trips) from an agent, the student-athlete will be declared ineligible. Once a student-athlete has had contact (in person) with an agent or agent intermediaries that were not arranged by the university any and all disciplinary action will be determined by the Athletic Director. The appropriate player s associations (e.g. NFLPA, NBAPA) will be informed of the agent allegedly involved and to what extent he or she was involved in the violation. Additionally, the agent will be removed from the University s Agent Registration List and will not be allowed to attend any sanctioned university agent events (i.e. Agent Day, Pro Scout Workout Day etc.). The Alabama State Attorney General s Office will also be informed of the violation.
