The 2015 summer theme for children and teens is Every Hero Has a Story featuring programs revolving around super heroes in literature and in our community. Adults will enjoy Escape the Ordinary, a theme with a focus on trying new things and learning new skills. Livingston Parish Library staff is ready to present a super-powered summer for all ages, and we look forward to you joining us. Our June/July newsletter will be your guide to this year s summer reading programs for adults, children, and teens. It is packed with everything you need to know how to register, events for all ages, prize information, calendars, and more. 2 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS When can I register for the library s summer reading program? Adults, children, and teens can register for the summer reading program starting on Tuesday, May 26. The last day to register is Friday, July 24. How can I register for the library s summer reading program? All ages can register online by visiting our website at Then choose the appropriate age group: Adults, Children, and Teens. Children may also register at the Youth Services desk at any of our five branches. Adults may also register at the circulation desk. What summer reading program should I register for? Livingston Parish Library hosts summer reading programs for adults, children, and teens. The children s program is open to babies - age 11. The teen program is for ages The adult program is for ages 18 and up. Whatever your age, the library has a summer reading program just for you! How do I complete the summer reading program? Children complete the summer reading program by reading 10 picture books or five chapter books. Books read aloud by parents count, so preschoolers and babies can participate too! Teens can read three books and write reviews for them on their online account, or attend three teen summer reading events to complete the program. Adults must read three books, ebooks, or audiobooks to complete the program and enter a grand prize drawing at the end of the summer for an Escape The Ordinary gift basket. Participants may read up to 18 books for a total of six entries into the drawing. What are the prizes for completing the summer reading program? All age groups receive prizes just for registering! Children who complete the program will also earn a completion certificate, Sonic ice cream, and more. Kids who continue reading will also be entered into a drawing to win a bicycle or a gift card at the end of the summer. Teens who complete the program will receive a Raising Cane s snack along with a chance to win an ereader or a gift card at our end-ofsummer prize drawing. Adults who complete their summer reading program will receive a special Livingston Parish Library tote bag and a chance to win an Escape The Ordinary gift basket sponsored by FOLLS and Chick-fil-A in our end-of-summer grand prize drawing. Participants will also be eligible to win a weekly prize of a camping chair Friday, June 5 through Friday, July 31. All drawing prizes are sponsored by the Friends of the Livingston Library System. 3 Repurposed Comic Book Art Learn how to upcycle old comics into awesome jewelry or art at the Livingston Parish Library! At this DIY workshop for ages 18 and up, we ll repurpose unwanted comics into your choice of coasters, bracelets, bags, or buttons. We will have comics on hand for use, but feel free to bring any that you d like to upcycle. Space is limited, so registration is required. Home Brew Basics Class Are you interested in learning how to home brew your own beer? Join LA Homebrew as they discuss the history of brewing, the current state of brewing, and different styles of beer at the Denham Springs- Walker Branch on Saturday, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. They will discuss what you need to get started home brewing, including ingredients and equipment. Learn about the brewing process, fermentation, bottling, and judging beer. We ll even brew a batch. You will get to smell and feel the ingredients of home brewed beer and taste a non-alcoholic sample. This class is for ages 21 and up only. Space is limited, so registration is required. 4 Getting Crafty Basket Weaving Learn two weaving techniques to create your very own woven reed basket at the library. All supplies will be provided. MB: Saturday, June 13 at 9:00 a.m. WAT: Saturday, June 20 at 9:00 a.m. Quilting Basics Join the Livingston Parish Quilt Guild at the Denham Springs- Walker Branch as they guide ages 18 and up through a small quilting project on Thursday, July 16 at 10:00 a.m. All supplies will be provided. Intro To Sewing If you have a sewing machine and would like to learn the basics of using it, come out to the Watson Branch s Introduction to Sewing Class on Saturday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m. Local sewing instructor Vicky Reynolds will show you the basics of using your machine. Then you will learn how to make a pillowcase with French seams. Please bring your sewing machine to this class. All other supplies will be provided by the library. Sit & Sew Come out to the Main Branch Tuesday, July 21 from 3:30-7:00 p.m. for Sit And Sew hours of uninterrupted sewing! Start that sewing project you have been meaning to make, finish a project you have wanted to complete but have questions about, or learn something new. Bring your machine, sewing supplies, and any materials you may need. A couple of Livingston Parish Library sewing machines will also be available for use. 4 All events require registration. Create Mason Jar Candles Make your own scented mason jar candle using soy wax, dyes, and natural scents. 5 I ve seen the library photographer taking pictures at library programs. Is there a place where we can see the pictures? Yes, there are several places patrons can view library photos. Livingston Parish Library s Communications Coordinator and staff members regularly take photos at library events. Patrons can view these photos on Flickr by clicking on the blue icon with two white dots at the bottom of the library s homepage at The icon will take you to Livingston Parish Library s group page, where a sampling of photos from all of the branches is displayed. To view a specific branch s photos, find a photo in the group taken by that branch and click on the branch name. That will take you to the branch s photostream, where you can view their photos. Photos are also often posted to Livingston Parish Library s Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram accounts. ECOS Latinos Presents Arpa The Watson Branch and Ecos Latinos present musical group Arpa along with special guests Javier Olondo and Ben Smith in a free concert on our outdoor stage Tuesday, June 23 at 6:00 p.m. Directed by harpist/composer Patrice Fisher, Arpa features rhythmical sounds from a bass guitar and a cajón (a percussion instrument) blending with the melodic touch of the harp, the guitar, and the keyboard. This project is partially supported by grants from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, the Louisiana Division of the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and a Community Arts Grant, by the City of New Orleans and the Arts Council Of New Orleans.
