Please take a moment to review our programs and explore the many recreational opportunities available for participants of all ages. As a department, we value customer service and strive to be innovative in the development of new programs and services. Our entire staff would appreciate any suggestions you may have to improve the curriculum currently offered. Please feel free to contact us at (760) Summer Mission Summer programs provide opportunities for children to participate in indoor and outdoor adventures as a group setting. This is place for children to use their creative minds through art, theater, music and other physical activities. Our priorities are safety and to have a memorable summer! We hope you have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you this 2014 season! Recreation Inclusion Programming City of El Centro Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to providing and serving the needs of everyone in our community. Persons with special disabilities are encouraged to participate in our City Recreation programs. A one-week advance notice is required to complete an assessment of the participant so planning for the appropriate program is available and to determine if an aide is required. Meetings will be held quarterly at 6:00 p.m. 3rd Thursday of the month at the Adult Center, 385 S. 1st Street. June 23, 2014

4 USDA Summer Feeding Program SPONSORED BY MEADOWS UNION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT City of El Centro Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with Meadows Union Elementary School District and in conjunction with USDA will be providing summer meals to all children in El Centro. The Recreation Staff will coordinate and monitor feeding sites. We encourage all families to send your child for a free meal at the locations listed below. The Feeding Program will be providing breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. Please see listing below for time schedule and start dates. We will be serving meals from June 16 through August 16: Breakfast: 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Lunch: 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Ages: 1 up to 18 years of age. 5 Summer Camps Half Pint Summer Camp Set out on an adventure with your half pints. Weekly themed activities are scheduled for our little campers. This camp provides your little one quality time learning and using their creative minds. Your child will learn to play and socialize with other children, learn new and fun games, singing along, acting and develop motor skills by using their hands to paint and develop creative art. Half pints will learn how to make new nutritious silly snacks for mom and dad. Half Pints will enjoy cool off time in our new Splash Pad! Open to ages: 3 years to 6 years old Dates: Monday - Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Fee: $35.00 per week - 8 week sessions Location: El Centro Community Center Lunch will be provided. Program is scheduled from June 16, 2014 to August 8, 2014 *Closed on Friday, July 4, 2014 *15 Kids per group, 3-4 years of age. 5-6 years of age Year Olds! Need something to do this summer? Then come over to the summer camp which offers a variety of themed camps, nutrition, dancing, talent shows, and nature programs. Learn the basics in gardening, new exercise for healthy bodies. Summer camp will provide new learned skills in fun math and reading. Learn how to use your creativity, teamwork, and the most importantly shared time with new friends and memorable experiences. Cool down with our new splash pad and have fun! Year Olds!!! Summer camp offers a variety of weekly themed camps that will provide plenty of exercise to keep you fit, learn new games, provides fun contest and will allow kids to use expression through art, music and dance. Will teach fun creative take home craft projects. Learn how to make new crafts through knitting and sewing projects. Rock art and computer skills will be provided. Contest and challenge games will be provided. Come show off your talents at the end of the summer program. Enjoy our cool Splash Pad! Open to ages: 11 years old up to 8th grade Dates: Monday - Friday, 11:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Fee: $35.00 per week - 8 week sessions Location: El Centro Community Center Lunch will be served. This program runs from June 16, 2014 to August 8, 2014 *Closed on Friday, July 4, 2014 Sunrise Camp Come and join us for some fun and adventurous activities. Adventure camp offers a variety of arts and crafts, new and old games, sports activities to keep you busy, scavenger hunts, gardening tips, table game contest and gym activities. Age groups are broken up into K-2nd, 3rd and 4th and 5th through 6th. Camps will have weekly themed activities that will allow your child to have a full experience in fun adventures. Come meet new friends and join us for a new fun adventure and stay cool this summer. Breakfast and Lunch will be provided. Program is scheduled from June 16, 2014 through August 8, 2014 Open to ages: Incoming kinder to 6th grade (5 years to 12 years old) Dates: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Fee: $35.00 per week - 8 week sessions Location: Wilson Jr. High (Gym) 600 S. 6 Summer Programs Nothing But Net Basketball Program Calling out all Basketball Players! Come sharpen your basketball skills and improve your passing, shooting, dribbling, defense and offensive skills. Learn the fundamentals techniques of basketball while competing in our summer basketball madness league. Volunteer coaches are welcomed! Teams will be divided into age appropriate groups, with practice dates TBA. All games will be played on Saturday. Program is scheduled from June 16, 2014 through August 1, 2014 Open to boys and girls ages 5-14 (Incoming 8th grade only) *Ages will be divided the first week of registration. Dates: Monday - Friday, 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (All groups will be assigned practice times) Fee: $80.00 per participant Location: Wilson Jr. High (Gym) 600 S. Wilson, El Centro *Closed on Friday, July 4, 2014 Volunteer forms may be picked up at the El Centro Community Center. All volunteers must be live scanned prior to practice and/or games. If not live scanned and clear, volunteers are not allowed on the court. Splash Pad The Community Center Splash Pad is open every day from Monday - Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. We ask that patrons use proper swim wear when attending this facility. No balloons or water balloons are allowed inside Splash Pad. Any food or beverages must be consumed in Ramada area. For more information please contact the office at (760) Splash Pad Hours Sunday-Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Community Gardens Come out and meet other locals who are interested in Community Gardens. This means everyone will have fun learning how to grow, nutritious and healthy food to sustain healthier lifestyle. Open to all ages, learn more about basic gardening. Program provides you an opportunity to increase physical activity, water consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption. So, let s get moving to promote a healthy lifestyle. Location: 375 S. 7 Youth Attaining Leadership Skills Program Breakfast and Lunch will be provided. Program is scheduled from June 16, 2014 through August 8, 2014 Hours: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Cost: $50.00 for volunteer shirt and Jr. Chef Ages: Incoming Freshman 11th Grade If you would like to make a difference in your community and earn community service hours? The Y.A.L.S. program is accepting incoming freshmen, sophomores and juniors to join a summer full of learning how to be a future recreation leader, how to organize your schedule, learn how to interview and work alongside Recreation staff to learn basic knowledge of camp structure. Must turn in letter of recommendation with a summer application to Recreation Supervisor s office. Location: El Centro Community Center, 375 South First Street, El Centro, Ca Program is limited to 30 Students Y.A.L.S. members will learn how to cook in our Jr. Chef Program and will be provided a certificate at the end of the summer for volunteer hours earned. Come and stay busy with our recreation department and help make our programs great!

Aqua Aerobics Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. $3.00 per class $40.00 for the summer Pool rules 1. No Running. 2. No horseplay. 3. All life jackets must be Coast Guard approved. 4. No food or drinks are allowed in pool area. 5. Anyone caught fighting in facility will be expelled 6. No smoking or alcoholic beverages allowed on premises. 7. All patrons must take a swim test before entering the deep end of the pool. 8. Absolutely no flips into the pool. 9. All patrons must wear an appropriate swim suit or swim trunks. 10. No cutoffs, t-shirts, sweat pants/short or basketball shorts allowed into the pool. 11. 10 Swim Lesson Descriptions Parents & Tots This is a class for children 6 months and older where the parent/guardian must accompany the child. This class teaches the child to be comfortable in and around the water so they can be ready to learn how to swim. Adult Swim This class is designed for older swimmers who wish to gain more confidence in the water or improve their strokes for exercise. No swimming experience is necessary, jut a desire to improve your abilities or learn to swim! Level 1 - Starfish This class is an introduction to the water. This is designed for younger swimmers with the intent to build confidence in the water. Skills taught are submerging face, assisted floats on back and stomach and unassisted movement along the pool wall. Level 2 - Sea Otter Must be able to perform the following skills: Blow bubbles for 3 seconds. Enter and exit pool unassisted. Supported float on back/front with comfort. Alternate arm and leg action on both front and back. Supported kicking on back and front. Retrieve object held at arm s length and face fully submerged. Level 3 - Minnows Must be able to perform the following skills: Jump into chest deep water unassisted. Perform 5 consecutive bobs. Front and back float for 5 seconds (face submerged). Front/back glide for 2 body lengths. Roll from front to back and back to front. Swim 5 yards kicking with alternating arms, on back/front. Retrieve objects from bottom of shallow end, eyes open and unassisted. Level 5 - Dolphins Must be able to perform the following skills: Swim front crawl 25 yards with rotary breathing. Swim back crawl 25 yards. Swim proper butterfly for 15 yards. Swim proper breaststroke for 15 yards. Swim elementary freestyle for 15 yards. Swim underwater three body lengths. Tread water for one minute in deep water. Level 6 - Sharks Must be able to perform the following skills: Perform shallow racing dive. Swim elementary backstroke 25 yards. Swim proper butterfly for 25 yards. Perform both front and back crawl flip turns. Swim underwater for 15 yards. Level 4 - Seals Must be able to perform the following skills: Perform front crawl for 15 yards with rhythmic breathing. Dive into deep water from sitting or kneeling position. Back crawl for 15 yards. Tread water for 30 seconds in deep water. Butterfly kick and body motion for 5 yards back/front. Retrieve objects from bottom of shallow end, eyes open and unassisted.

11 Adult Center Programs Exercise Day Have fun and move through a variety of exercises. Join today to stay in shape. Day: Tuesday Time: 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Sewing/Crotchet Come and learn how to make fun and different things out of yarn. This crotchet program teaches seniors and adults how to create different things from their wonderful hands. Scarfs and beanies for the winter, baby blankets, yarn slippers, and quilts, are some of the art this fine program has to offer. Whether you re a man or a woman, learning how to create these things is amazing. Days: Wednesdays Time: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Senior Movie Day Lights, Camera, Action.. Join us and relax by enjoying a good movie. Day: Friday Time: 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Senior Game Day DO NOT PASS GO AND GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL!!! Come and play great games this summer. We have a variety of games like dominoes, playing cards, Monopoly, UNO card games, Nintendo Wii games, and Phase 10. Come and have some fun with us and play to win some fun stuff! Days: Everyday Hours: 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Computer Lab Surf the Internet, print documents, and check your . The Adult Center computer lab is open to adults and seniors. See times below for schedule. Hours: Monday & Thursday 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Friday 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Intro to Computers A course that is offered to seniors and adults who wish to learn the basics of computers. Many of today s seniors and adults don t have someone to teach them how to navigate the internet or use certain programs. Learn the basics of using a computer. Explore various programs that windows contain such as Microsoft Word, Explorer, desktop, shortcuts, control panel and many more features that today s computers have to offer. This course has a limit of four students per class. Cost: $25.00 per month $15 per month for Seniors (62+) Level 1 Beginning Monday & Wednesday 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Level 2 Intermediate Tuesday & Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Level 3 Advance Fridays 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

14 Special Events Ice Cream Social and Rain on Main To Be Determined 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. FREE El Grito de Independencia & Taco Cook Off Saturday, September 27, 2015 Stark Field 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. FREE The City of El Centro and the Consulate of Mexico are celebrating Mexican Independence Day with an exciting event! El Grito de Independencia and Taco Cook-Off at Stark Field in El Centro. Event patrons will enjoy the excitement of cultural music, authentic cuisine, and artesian merchandise at this Celebration of Mexican Independence. The historical ceremony of El Grito will be showcased amidst the best tacos that the community has to offer. Artists and artisans will proudly display their handiwork with many items available for sale. This is your big chance to gain fame and awards for your most mouth watering taco recipes. Local restaurants and organizations compete along with individual members of our community for the prestigious title of Best Taco in El Centro. Bring your family out for fun evening to commemorate Mexican heritage and independence. Grito de Independencia & Taco Cook-Off will be an evening of traditional celebrations, mouth watering tacos, authentic Mexican ceremony and activities for all ages. Seasonal Tree Lighting & Street Fair Friday, December 5, th & Main 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. FREE Our community will come together to participate in traditional celebrations of the season! The City Mayor will lead the countdown to reveal a giant Christmas tree covered in lights, tinsel and decorations. While enjoying cookies and hot chocolate everyone can listen to the delightful music of local choirs and performances. Santa Clause will make an appearance atop the El Centro Fire Engine and will bear gifts for hundreds of children. Mardi Gras Light Parade & Street Festival Saturday, February 21, 2015 Main Street 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. FREE The City of El Centro s Signature Events is the Mardi Gras Light Parade & Street Festival! The City of El Centro recreates the world famous Mardi Gras with a Lighted Parade and Street Fair. The traditional themed colors of purple, green and gold encompass the entire Downtown area. Our whole community eagerly anticipates the parade, street festival, glittery costumes, lights, masks and beads. Come and enjoy Jazz music and New Orleans style cuisine. Celebrating New Orleans tradition with a Light Parade & Street Festival creates an exciting and fun evening for the entire family. Le Tour de Manure Saturday, March 28, S. 1st St. 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Dust off your bicycles and pull on your riding britches. Bring your family; bring your friends of all ages and come on down to the Community Center for a bike ride to benefit the Imperial Valley Special Olympics. Music Festival & Fireworks Show Friday, April 3, 2015 Stark Field 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. FREE This event features our local bands. A wide variety of food will be offered by local and regional organizations for patrons to eat and enjoy. A Kiddie Corner will be offered for children that will include fun games and entertainment. A spectacular fireworks show will conclude this exciting event.
