4 Dear New Member, Congratulations on taking your first steps toward becoming a brother in Chi Phi. It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to join our fraternity. A bid of membership is not something that we take lightly, so you should be proud to have this opportunity. Understand that joining Chi Phi is a lifelong commitment to empowering yourself and others with the strength and will to be a better man. Becoming a Chi Phi is more than the letters on your chest. At the conclusion of our new member process, you will be prepared for more than just your three years as an active, as the will of a true Chi Phi never fades. The new member process you are about to begin will provide you an understanding of how the brotherhood operates and subsists. You will learn our chapter history, our national history, and the values which we hold near to our heart. The prayer and creed will be second nature to you and you will learn to live by these words. Remember that knowing the content provided to you is just the first step. It is up to you to understand and apply it. This manual is intended to prepare you for entrance into the brotherhood. Understanding the content within means that you understand what is expected of you as a brother. You will be guided by your new member educator, but remember that it is up to you to discover the true meaning of becoming a brother of the Psi Chapter of Chi Phi. We, as a chapter, have decided that you are fit to become a member of our fraternity, but that does not mean that your journey is complete. In fact, it is just now beginning. We expect this process to be one of great learning and self discovery, and we look forward to calling you Brother. 6 Rights and Responsibilities of Brothers and New Members All those experiencing the New Member Education Plan, whether as new members or active brothers teaching the new members, have the responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate and representative of the standards of Chi Phi. All actions taken reflect directly on the fraternity, regardless if one is an initiated brother or a potential new member of the fraternity. All new members have the right and responsibility to speak to their New Member Educator, any member of the Executive Board, and/or any university official in the case of any unauthorized and potentially dangerous activities, including hazing. All new members have the right to be treated as fairly as any brother. All new members have the right to the respect of their culture, religion, personal beliefs, and thoughts. Any action that forces a potential new member to feel the need to withhold details from an outside entity Chi Phi ceremonial secrets not included shall be forbidden. All have a right to personal dignity and to be free from any intentional or deliberate harm or humiliation. All have a right to voice their concerns in a calm and intelligent manner, and it is the utmost responsibility of the listener to treat the concerns seriously. All brothers are expected to maintain and exhibit the qualities of a Chi Phi at all times whether in the chapter house, on campus, or in their regular day to day lives. All brothers are expected to adhere to expectations and duties that the house stipulates. All brothers are expected to treat the house in accordance with school guidelines as Lehigh owns the Chapter House. Living in the house is a privilege not a right. All brothers are expected to adhere to the student code of conduct and hold others to that standard. 6

7 New Member Education Materials The Chi Phi Creed I believe in the Chi Phi Fraternity. From its triple origin, Chi Phi sets forth and maintains values that others in society have dared to compromise. Truth, Honor, and Personal Integrity are the foundations upon which Chi Phi is built. A man s word is his bond. Chivalrous behavior crosses the ages to touch the heart of Chi Phi. I believe in the friendship of Chi Phi. Whether on the road or in the Chapter house, the hand of Brotherhood is always extended. The strength obtained from the union of congenial minds is the backbone of the Fraternity. Our founders sought for nothing less. Finally, I believe in the future of the Chi Phi Fraternity because I believe in myself. When I put forth my best effort and combine that with the strength of my Brothers, we can achieve the victory of continual existence. As long as the Almighty permits, I will strive to better myself through the teachings of my Fraternity. Being a more aware citizen, a more able person, and a stronger Chi Phi shall be my reward. 7

Make it a blessing and a benefit to all its members. Deliver us from those evils to which we may be at any time exposed. 9 The Chi Phi True Gentleman The true gentleman is a man whose conduct proceeds from goodwill and an acute sense of propriety and whose self control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled when necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but with sincerity and sympathy always; who makes his deeds follow his words; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue is safe. 9

13 Psi Chapter History The Psi Chapter of Chi Phi was founded on February 22, 1872 at Lehigh University by George C. Haldeman. Haldeman's fellow petitioners were (freshmen and sophomores): Smith V. Wilson, Frank A. Watkins, William M. Rees, George Scott, and Julius P Meyer. Haldeman had been initiated at Franklin and Marshall University in March of 1871 for the sole purpose of bringing Chi Phi to Lehigh. However, the creation of the Psi chapter was not without it s challenges. In the fall of 1871, Haldeman visited the Beta Chapter at Muhlenberg College, six miles away, and enlisted the services of its members in his under taking. The members of Beta, who up to this time had known nothing of the movement on foot, approved warmly of Haldeman s plans, and rendered him and his associates valuable and continuous assistance. The petition for a chapter was forwarded to the fraternity authorities, and it was expected that a favorable response would be received at once. However, much debate arose from the fellow chapters specifically the Delta Chapter (Rutgers), stemming from a concern of a dominating Pennsylvania influence of the fraternity. Eventually Delta agreed to allow Lehigh into the Chi Phi National Organization, due largely in part to the Grand Alpha, William Sutphen visiting the Delta Chapter in person to convince them. The first Chi Phi chapter at Lehigh was initiated on February 22nd, Brother Oscar Meyer, a member of the Beta Chapter, played a key role in the founding of the Psi Chapter of the Chi Phi Fraternity. He visited the chapter after hearing of Delta s change in heart, and convinced the petitioners to continue in their bid to start Chi Phi at Lehigh. Brother Meyer successfully taught the petitioners the initiation rituals, and helped organize the initiation with assistance from other members of the Beta Chapter at the house located at 13

14 second and new street. He then penned a letter to the Grand Alpha Sutphen, articulating the inaugurations that had taken place. Two months after the chapter was founded, the Gamma, W. Marshall Rees, sent out an "official". An official is a semi annual letter exchanged amongst the chapters. It read: "Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, April 22, 1872 From the Psi to the Alpha of Chi Phi. Greetings: Herein I have the pleasure of presenting to you our official for the second collegiate term, beginning February 1, Our college year is divided into two terms of twenty two weeks each. The second term ends June 20th. This is the first official sent by Psi. I trust that we may price a shining star in the Fraternity. Let us all labor zealously to place Chi Phi at the head and far in advance of all college fraternities. May Chi Phi live long and prosper. Psi has eight members present, but we expect soon to make some additions to our numbers. Each brother of the Psi sends this Chi Phi greeting to each and every brother Alpha. 15 William W. Cross, Delta, Milford, Pa. Cleveland S. Stillwell, Sag Harbor, Long Island In 1879, the chapter was irresponsible, and its members, though perfect in their relations to each other where only heart was demanded, failed utterly to appreciate that grander ideal which comprehends the horizon of the whole fraternity. The chapter was nearly wrecked, until a new man, named Boudinot Keith, stepped in and became the leader. He gave the chapter new life and a new sense of responsibility. Many well known sites in Bethlehem were once locations of the fraternity. The Moravian Bookshop, the Washington Republican Club, the Post Office, and the Union Bank and Trust Company were all at one time occupied by Chi Phi. After continually shifting from one part of town to another in an effort to find a suitable location, the fraternity finally established itself in its present home in Sayre Park on the Lehigh campus in the fall of The house was erected by the alumni and is managed through a committee of the Briarfield Alumni Association. About Boudinot Keith: Boudinot Keith, Psi, Class of 1880 was quite instrumental in maintaining the existence of Psi in the early years. Keith was born on November 4, 1859 to Ormes B. and Julia Keith in Jenkintown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He received his early education in France. Boudinot only attended Lehigh for two years, after which, he remained in Bethlehem, studying Law and running the affairs of the fraternity. In late 1880, Keith passed the bar exam for the Northampton bar, in Easton, PA and was 15

16 admitted to the Northampton County courts. A few days later, his mother passed away in New York City. He went to the home of his brother in law, John Brooks Leavitt, an attorney, in New York City, to take care of matters. While he was there, he prepared to take the bar exam in New York. His spare moments were said to be spent in the interests of Chi Phi. His sister, Mary had been married to Leavitt just a year earlier in Bethlehem. He became an attorney in New York and served twice as Grand Alpha of Chi Phi. At present, he is the only Grand Alpha from Psi. Having retired, he was commissioned on July 5, 1918 a Major and served as Judge Advocate in Tours, France during the last months of the war. He served as a trial lawyer at the JAG headquarters. Elisha, his son, a lieutenant, was an MP in the Army infantry. After Armistice, the two met in Tours and spent a week together before Elisha succumbed to exhaustion and died on December 20. Filled with sorrow, Boudinot returned to the United States a month later. He remained in the army until discharged on January 22,

17 National History 1824 Princeton Order The first of these older organizations, the Chi Phi Society, which is known in the history of the Fraternity as the Princeton Order of Chi Phi, was established at the College of New Jersey, later Princeton University, on December 24, 1824, by Robert Baird, then a tutor in the college and later a prominent Presbyterian clergyman. Also involved in the formation of this secret Chi Phi Society were a number of faculty members of both college and seminary as well as undergraduates of both institutions. This society ceased to be active in Princeton order Re Established Thirty years later, in the winter of , John MacLean, Jr., found among the papers of his uncle, John MacLean, president of Princeton University, the old constitution, minute book, and ritual of the Chi Phi Society of 1824; and with these as his guide, he united with Charles Smith Degraw and Gustavus W. Mayer in reorganizing the old society at Princeton along "modern lines." The old motto and a great part of the ritual were retained. In the fall of 1854, Mayer organized a second Chapter of the Chi Phi Society at Franklin and Marshall College. Joseph Henry Dubbs, later a distinguished professor of history at his alma mater, was the first initiate. The opposition of the Princeton faculty and the prohibitory pledge required of freshmen by the institution caused the death of the reorganized Princeton Chapter in Its records were destroyed by the last active members, leaving the Lancaster Chapter alone to represent the society. 17

18 1858 Southern Order The second of these older organizations, called the Chi Phi Fraternity and now known in our history as the Southern Order of Chi Phi, was founded at the University of North Carolina on August 21, 1858, by Thomas Capehart, Augustus Flythe, John C. Tucker, William H. Green, Fletcher T. Seymour, and James J. Cherry. All students at the university, they organized this club to perpetuate their friendship and named it Chi Phi Fraternity. They wished to expand, so Chapters were rapidly organized at Centenary, Davidson, Virginia, Nashville, and Cumberland. However, the American Civil War ( ) meant the end of all but the parent Chapter. Soon after the war, new Chapters sprang up at Hampden Sydney, Georgia, Edinburgh (Scotland), Mercer, Emory, Oglethorpe, Trinity, Kentucky Military Institute, and St. John's. The extinct Chapters at Virginia and Davidson were reorganized. Following the war, however, the University of North Carolina itself was closed, necessitating the transfer of the "Alpha" Chapter title to the Virginia Chapter. While this Chi Phi organization had a constitution and held conventions, the primary authority rested with the "Alpha" Chapter. When the Chapter at North Carolina was reestablished, it took on the hyphenated name "Alpha Alpha." Those Chapters of Chi Phi with hyphenated names indicate that upon the reorganization of the Chapter, its name had already been taken. The Chapters original designation is then preceded by a hyphenated Alpha Secret Order The Secret Order of Chi Phi, which is now known in the history of the Fraternity as the Hobart Order of Chi Phi, was formed at Hobart College on November 14,1860, by Amos Brunson and Alexander J. Beach, who were both students at the college. Because they were dissatisfied with the fraternities existing at Hobart, they associated themselves with John W. Jones, George G. Hopkins, Edward S. Lawson, Samuel W. Tuttle, David S. Hall, David P. Jackson, 18

19 William H. Shepard, Harvey N. Loomis, William Sutphen and Frank B. Wilson to found the Upsilon Chapter of the Secret Order of Chi Phi. From Hobart, Charters were soon issued to new Chapters at Kenyon, Princeton, and Rutgers Union of the Northern Order Five years later, the Secret Order of Chi Phi at Hobart learned of the existence of the Chi Phi Society at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania and on May 29, 1867, the two societies formally united. The Northern Order of the Chi Phi Fraternity was thus formed, and later placed Chapters at Muhlenberg, Cornell, Dickinson, Wofford, Washington and Lee, Lehigh, Brown, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Amherst, Ohio Wesleyan, and Lafayette Union of the Northern and Southern Orders In early winter of , the Hobart alumni in New York learned of the existence of the Chi Phi Fraternity in the South through John R. D. Shepard, a member of the Alpha Chapter at North Carolina. Negotiations for union were initiated but languished until the northern Chi Phis placed Chapters at Wofford and Washington and Lee in Particularly through the energy of the members of the latter Chapter, negotiations were renewed, and the union was finally accomplished during a meeting in Washington, D.C. on March 27, The new organization took the name Chi Phi Fraternity from the Southern Order, while the fabric of organization and ritual were taken from the Northern Order Chi Phi, like other fraternities, had lost heavily in both Chapters and membership during the Civil War. This was especially true of the Southern Order where entire Chapters had volunteered for service and where the effects of the war had largely destroyed southern institutions of higher learning. The period following the war, Reconstruction, was largely defined by regional differences even though the union of the Northern and Southern Orders of 19

20 Chi Phi occurred in 1874 a unification that illustrated the strength of the common ideals that drew the two orders into union. Chi Phi Fraternity was among the first to forget sectionalism and to extend the hand of Brotherhood after the war. This step was largely attributable to the leadership of Georgian Henry W. Grady and to northern Chi Phis of similar mind Theta Chapter Edinburgh, Scotland A unique result of these times was the establishment of the Theta Chapter of Chi Phi at Edinburgh University, in Edinburgh, Scotland, in After the war, as many southern colleges and universities were largely destroyed, many prominent students went abroad to complete their studies. A group of men, two of whom were already Chi Phis, were granted a charter by the Chi Phi Fraternity in The Chapter was active for a few years but added no New Members. Eventually, as many southern colleges reopened, the charter for the Theta Chapter was withdrawn in This is thought to be the only Chapter of an American college Fraternity ever to have been established in Europe The Chi Phi Chakett The official publication of the Fraternity is The Chi Phi Chakett, a semi annual magazine distributed to all alumni. The Chakett was first published in 1868 by Zeta Chapter at Franklin and Marshall College. It was the first Fraternity Chapter paper published in the United States. It appeared again in 1869 and 1872, edited by the Pennsylvania Chapters. It appeared in 1874 as The Chi Phi Quarterly, which was issued regularly until It was then superseded by an official journal, again called The Chi Phi Chakett. Until 1924, The Chakett was purely an official bulletin, its place being filled as far as general interest was concerned by annual yearbooks. Since 1924, it has appeared regularly as an open magazine. 20

21 An Alumni Directory, giving names, addresses, and telephone numbers is published periodically. In 1924, a Chi Phi Memorial Volume, edited by Dr. Theodore B. Appel, was issued and dedicated to Chi Phis who had lost their lives in the service of their country. In addition to a complete history of the Fraternity, it contained full biographical details of the members. In September of 1924, Chi Phi celebrated at its annual Congress in Chicago, the centennial of the founding of the Chi Phi Society at Princeton, the seventieth anniversary of the founding of its oldest active Chapter at Franklin and Marshall College, and the semi centennial of the union of the Northern and Southern Orders. At these exercises, the sixteen general fraternities organized before 1854 were represented by official delegates, as was the National InterFraternity Conference Lambda Chapter at California Another geographic milestone for Chi Phi Fraternity happened when Lambda Chapter was established at the University of California on February 11, Lambda Chapter came about when two Chi Phis from different Chapters, attending the University of California, happened upon each other on the cable cars in California. The sequel is well known: With determined zeal, they found suitable men to form a new Chapter. Formal application was sent to the Grand Officers. A vote of the Chapters was taken and the charter was granted to Lambda. Chi Phi was the second Fraternity on the campus of the University of California. Chi Phi had truly become a national Fraternity with coast to coast presence. Further westward expansion followed in 1892 with Nu Chapter at Texas. Other west coast Chapters did not arrive on the scene until the 1930s when Delta Delta at UCLA, Epsilon Delta at Oregon State, and Eta Delta at Southern California were established in quick fashion. 21

22 1939 The Chronicles of Chi Phi In 1939, the Fraternity published The Chronicles of Chi Phi, a monumental history of the Fraternity prepared by Dr. Theodore B. Appel, Zeta 1889 (Franklin and Marshall). In addition to a complete history of Chi Phi, the work throws much light on the early origin of fraternities and their development in the American college system and has accordingly been of wide interest in the Fraternity world. It contains the history of the Fraternity, histories of each Chapter, information on the various administrations of the Fraternity, and numerous pictures of Fraternal history. 30 New Member Education Program INTRODUCTION The Chi Phi New Member Education Program is aimed to first and foremost, educate new members to understand the values and history of the Fraternity. Our lasting tradition is what keeps the Psi chapter alive and vibrant. One s life can be structured on the principles of the Fraternity: Truth, Honor, and Personal Integrity. Through these principles, the program is designed to begin self growth, awareness and confidence, which will inevitably develop brothers into men. Of the values the Fraternity represents, responsibility, respect and teamwork are perhaps the most significant. With these values in place, the heartbeat of the chapter will never stop. Lastly, the new member education program kindles social development, leading to bonds of everlasting quality. Friendship, above all, is treasured at the Psi chapter. Additionally, the Chi Phi new member education program is structured as a model of excellence in anti hazing. This program aims to set a precedent and serve as an example for other Greek organizations. The weekend consists of rituals, historical lessons, speeches by guests from the Briarfield Association, Chi Phi National Office or Lehigh University, and learning modules all aimed to prepare new members to perform best practices to further strengthen the chapter. As a result, the new members set goals to execute during their time as actives. Chapter leaders have thoroughly vetted this new member education program for the last year with oversight organizations to enhance the positive effects of education and rituals and reduce the opportunities for hazing to emerge. The new member educator has reviewed this three week new member program with and incorporated the suggestions from the Briarfield Association, the Alumni Association of the Chi Phi Fraternity at Lehigh. The new member educator presented and revised the program based on the suggestions provided by representatives of the Lehigh Administration. The new member educator also incorporated the feedback of the Chi Phi National Office into this program. During an alumni active retreat in January, 2015, the order of the events and activities of the new member education program were discussed in committee with alumni and presented at a full session at the conclusion of the retreat. 30

31 EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL When bids are accepted, the new member educator issues to all new member candidate educational material that include required information on the history of the Psi Chapter and support them with their education. Candidates for new membership familiarize themselves with the following items by the beginning of the New Member Education (NME) Program: The Creed, Prayer and True Gentlemen Greek Alphabet History of the national fraternity, for example founding chapters, founders, dates, etc. History of the Psi Chapter Structure of the grand council & house positions The Chi Phi New Member Resource book, which is available at Meaning of the Crest & Chakett Part 1 of Greek Life EDU, which is available online at NOTE: New members will not be required to memorize this educational material. HAZING REPORTING PROTOCOL The new member education program involves no hazing or interactions with other chapters or groups. The new member educator will perform the following activities to provide the appropriate reporting guidance should hazing occur: Distribute a page in each new member's educational material that advises them of the scope of activities that are generally considered to be hazing and how to properly report hazing, such as calling NOT HAZE. 32 WEEK 1: NATIONAL HISTORY Friday, February 12 th New Member Dinner 6:00 pm, Chapter House New members are led into the dining room by the Alpha. Tables are set up in groups with alumni and actives spread out at each table to maximize their exposure to meeting the new members. (Alumni attendance will vary, but we anticipate 4 6.) Alumni and actives stand up one at a time and introduce themselves. Next, the new members stand up one at a time and introduce themselves, including their name, hometown and major, and what joining Chi Phi means to them. After the introductions have concluded, the Chi Phi Prayer is conducted by the Beta and moment of silence is introduced. Next, dinner is served. Taking the Pledge 7 pm, Chapter house All new members wait in the dining room with the Alpha while the pledge ceremony is set up. Waiting to enter serves as a symbolic moment: they enter as a group to begin their education to be brothers. 8:00 Pledge Ceremony with Pin Distribution (OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) New members are to be led into the living room by the new member educator. 33 The new members are taken to the basement to reflect upon the pledge ceremony as a group. 10:30 pm Discussion of Pledge ceremony/history lesson This lesson will take place in the basement, led by an alumnus and active, and will cover understanding the pledge they took 11:00 pm Bonding Time New members are led to the library by the Alpha. They pair up with someone from their new member class, learn about that person and introduce that person to the rest of the group with what they just learned. They should try to learn new and interesting facts about the person, which help them identify each person as unique. *No Alcohol Saturday, February 13th 9:00 am Icebreakers New members and brothers gather in the living room to do team building exercises and icebreakers. 35 Sunday, February 14th Orientation 12:00 pm, Chapter House The new member educator presented educational material that contains an historical overview and other essential pieces of information such as list of brothers cell phone numbers and an outline of what is expected of them Brothers lead by House Manager demonstrate how weekly Sunday house cleaning is to be performed. This includes details on cleaning and organizing each area of the house and the location of cleaning supplies. Discussion on role of Briarfield association. New Members will also be given an envelope and paper to write and reflect on what they expect to get out of joining Chi Phi and why did they choose Chi Phi. Monday Wednesday, February 15 17th 12:00 pm 1:00 pm, 6:00 pm 7:00 pm, Chapter House Brothers demonstrate to groups of three new members on separate days and shifts how waits are supposed to work. This includes where everything is located in the kitchen and where certain food is supposed to be stored. a This will assure that the new members are aware of the obligations and duties of being a brother in Chi Phi. They will know that this is not solely their duty but that it is expected that they join the brotherhood immediately on the duties we take on. To understand exactly what they will be doing as future leaders of Chi Phi and of the world, they must fully understand what the position entails. After full understanding of each position, a discussion will be had with the new members about which roles they see themselves filling. Tuesday, February 23rd 7:00 pm, Chapter House LUPD Safety Module and Q&A session a We are constantly looking to improve relations on and off campus and it starts at the new member level. This module will cover basics on campus safety with a focus on Lehigh social life, as it relates to the police. Study hours Wednesday, February 24th 7:00 pm, Chapter House Introduction to the class philanthropy event a Philanthropy is something meant to be taken very seriously at the Psi chapter. Introducing them into the realm of helping others for no reward and understanding why we have to give back gives powerful messages of personal responsibility. New members are tasked with creating, planning and executing a philanthropy event to be help a worthy organization on or near Lehigh s campus 37

38 a This teaches them how to be self governed and learn to grow without micro management. They will receive help only when necessary (i.e. funds, contact info) so that they can learn to be independent, but unified as a pledge class. This event may be held after initiation, but must be fully planned beforehand New Members are encouraged to work with a new Sorority Pledge Class to further relational developments. Study hours Friday, February 26th 7:00 pm, Chapter House History Lesson a a The history lesson will go over the founding of the Psi chapter, previous places the Psi chapter has resided, important brothers from the Psi chapter, and about the re founding of This information will be presented to them by having the new members reading passages about historical aspects of the chapter and participating in a group discussion about the information learned. The Lambda will be the sole person conducting these meetings. Structure: NM s read passages aloud with the entire new member class NME explains what is most important from the passages NME facilitates discussion on the importance of understanding the history and answers any questions that the new members may have 38

39 Saturday, February 27th Chapter House 8:00 am Breakfast 9:00 am Members of the first new pledge class Q&A Current brothers and alumni that were in the first new member class of the 2010 recolonization return to talk and answer questions about what it was like to rebuild our chapter into what it is today. 10:00 am Study Hours Brothers and new members enjoy a two hour window to do any work they might have in this event filled weekend. 12:00 pm Lunch Alumni and new members take lunch together in the chapter dining room. 1:00 pm Pledge Class Mock Elections The pledge class runs for officer positions they find most appealing and related to how they wish to grow in the house. These positions will act as a microcosm of how the chapter operates at a higher level. The idea is to give the new members a chance to step out of their comfort zone while learning responsibility and understanding positions on a more intimate basis. 2:30 pm 3 Rings Journey Principle: Travel around campus to attain knowledge of the strong historical presence the Psi chapter has at Lehigh. This journey also challenges the new members to work as a team to solve problems. 39

40 5:30 pm Dinner 7:00 pm Pledge Class Mock Chapter Meeting New members meet in the library and discuss and debate current in house hotbed issues. This will prepare them for chapter and the type of conversations that happen during these meetings. The new members will be given an example of a more serious topic and they will discuss it, in order showcase how chapter if a forum to discuss important topic an issues that affect the brotherhood. It is mostly to get them used to the structure of chapter meetings, but also to challenge them to think about the issues at hand. WEEK 3: INITIATION Monday, February 29th 40

41 7:00 pm, Chapter House Alumni/University Talk about 2010 Re Founding and December 6th incident a b The refounding defines a new page in Psi chapter history and needs to be recognized as a fundamental turning point. A cornerstone of change, this Dec. 6 th incident has sparked many shifts in the house functionality and it is vital that the brothers understand why we cannot have slip ups like this in the future. Tuesday, March 1st 7:00 pm, Chapter House History Lesson a Any subjects that were not covered/going over points as needed New members will not get all that they need out of the weekend if they do not know the history. It is important for the new members to understand WHY they need to know the history. It cannot be forced upon them, as the why part is what is so fundamental to continual existence. Quiz/Assessment a Made up of basic questions on the local and national history. It will be given in the form of a PowerPoint in which the NME will call on new members to answer questions. These questions are not designed to trick the new members, rather help them gain further understanding of the vital history that makes Chi Phi what it is. Wednesday, March 2nd 7:00 pm, Chapter House Time to work on Paddles, Class Philanthropy Event Study hours NME confirms NM s are prepared for initiation. Our initiation ceremony is deeply rooted in our history and a knowledge of the development of Chi Phi. By this point, the NM s will know all that they need to know, but the NME must ensure that they are aware of the importance of their 41

42 knowledge as they participate in the ceremony. Sunday, March 6th Chapter House Initiation Day 8:00 am Breakfast 8:30 am Group Exercise Shared Foundation This is an exercise in teamwork/unity. 9:00 am Gather Brothers, Chi Phi Girl New members will be taught the songs Gather Brothers and Chi Phi Girl. Both songs are known nationally by Chi Phi brothers and it is a point of pride of Chi Phi s to know them by heart. Knowing it will further solidify their entry into a brotherhood. 10:30 am Introduction to Pledge Project/Brainstorming ideas for Pledge Project The pledge project will take place after initiation. The project is up to the new members, but in the past it has generally been making furniture for the porch, foyer, and backyard. 11:30 am Lunch Dining room. A discussion on the final leg of the program should ensue and questions should be answered. 12:00 pm 42

43 Personal Reflection Exercise This will be a journey through the chapter each new member with an active mentor. New members will stop in 3 4 rooms to share their knowledge with active brothers and gain more knowledge from active brothers. New members will enter, everyone in the room will recite the specified literature (creed, prayer, True Gentleman), and then there will be an open discussion about it. NM s will be challenged to apply passages to their daily lives. The importance of applying the knowledge of Chi Phi to a member s actual life is what sets us apart from the rest of the Greek community nationwide. We do not preach Chi Phi, we live it. 1:30 pm Trip to Tschoop s Grave Principle: Learn about an important member of the Mohican Indians, and how he relates to the Psi Chapter and its founders. Procedure: When they arrive, new members work together to decipher the inscription on Tschoop s grave. The Alpha will be there to discuss the importance of the grave site. Actives will walk back with new members in small groups and reflect and talk about Tschoop and their education so far. 3:00 pm 9:00 pm, Initiation Ritual At the end of the initiation ritual, new members become full brothers in the Chi Phi Fraternity. POST INITIATION Big Brother Program 43

44 The big brother ceremony occurs the Saturday after initiation (March 26 th ). The big brother program is designed solely to benefit new members. Being someone s big brother is a privilege that is taken seriously. New members will be paired with their big brothers by providing a list of their top three choices for big brother and will have a discussion with the Lambda so he can make sure they will be the right fit. All big brothers to be will have a meeting with the Lambda before any official pairings are made, so as to discuss what being a big brother entails and if they are prepared for the responsibility. New members typically choose big brothers based on house involvement, major and common interests. All brothers in good academic and disciplinary standing will be eligible to receive a little brother. Big brothers are revealed in accordance with Chi Phi ritual. The entire brotherhood will be gathered in the basement, and one by one, the new members will present their paddle to the Alpha. The Alpha will then ask the new member about the work that was put in to create the paddle. Immediately following the paddle discussion, the big brother is revealed, and an oath is taken by the big brother. New members give the paddles they design and build to their big brothers as a token of their individuality. After a semester or two, big brothers typically return these paddles if requested. The big brother program extends beyond the interactions between the new member and his big brother. The lineage of big brothers has an incredibly strong effect as well. Knowing older brothers that are related through big brothers can create special bonds within the brotherhood. Ultimately, the program is designed to give a strong support system within the house. Families often go out to dinner throughout the school year, and we try to provide opportunities for them to do activities together. Weekly Expectations: Mandatory 6 Study Hours completed weekly. (log study hours submitted to Lambda weekly) Lehigh has a very demanding workload for much of its students. As a chapter, academics are a number one priority, so we will block off ample time for new members studies. Must attend 1 school hosted events per week This is to encourage active brotherhood participation on campus. These can range anything from academic speakers from other Universities, professional speakers at Rauch Business School, or even social discussions from the Women s Center. We want to be on the forefront of improving campus vs. Greek life issues with the community. Pre Initiation Requirements: Each New Member must provide a piece of information regarding a different Chi Phi Chapter s History. 44

45 Pledge Class must successfully complete a pledge class project for the Chapter House of their own choosing (under the discretion of the Lambda) Post Initiation Event: Chi Phi Case Study The idea behind this is that there will always be challenges that brothers face that they have to deal with. I want to come up with a situation in which the Fraternity has to come to a conclusion on a specific issue, and instruct the New Members to prepare how they would react (group them one executive board at a time) and see how they would deal with the issue. They must present their solution and the reasoning behind it. This will be presented in the Chapter House as a formal presentation. The purpose is to have the new members be able to think as leaders how they would deal with an issue, as well as teach them to prepare a presentation and successfully perform it.
