1 SOCOMUN September 26th, :30 am 4:30 pm Hosted at SMCHS Contact Mr. Remmell: (949) Advertise in the SOCOMUN Program Online (1400 students) $100 full page $50 half page Advertise in the MUN Newsletter (325 families) $50 per month for one page ad 9 months left (Oct. - June)

2 Freshman Year Mr. John Remmell This is my 20th year as the Freshman MUN teacher. There are two things that I can be sure of. First, leading up to the conference, Freshmen will get nervous. It is the fear of the unknown and the closer it gets, the more apprehension they have, especially the week before the Position Paper is due. (Due date: Sept. 18th) Even though this is a credit/ no credit kind of assignment this seems to ignite the fear. I will even guarantee there will be tears shed in some homes prior to the conference. Even though as Tom Hanks said in A League of Their Own, there s no crying in [MUN]! The other thing I can be certain of is that once they attend SOCOMUN on September 26th they will feel much better about MUN and will probably be very excited. I have often had parents remark what an incredible transformation their children have undergone in just one day. You will probably find that MUN does have a profoundly positive effect on your student. All I ask is that you do your best to help your student deal with any nervousness they may experience. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions. remmellj@smhs.org (949)

There is no longer any positions left for the SOCOMUN Secretariat.

5 Missing a Required MUN Conference It is best not to miss a required conference for any reason. However, illness, injury, and other commitments can get in the way. If you must miss an MUN conference you should get your MUN teacher s PERMISSION before sign ups for that conference. Your MUN teacher must give his/her permission for you to miss the conference. If this permission is given then you must do all of the required class work for the conference that you miss (write the papers, participate in roasts, etc.) You must attend another make up conference to take the place of the conference you missed. You must arrange with your teacher beforehand what conference you will attend as a make up. You will also be required to complete any papers, etc. that this additional conference requires. You must attend the entire make up conference even if it is longer than the one that you missed. You may not use Head Delegate or any invitational conferences in the place of required conferences. Those are considered privileges and should not be used as a way out of a required conference. If students miss a required conference and do not complete a make up conference, their academic grade will be penalized. The penalty will be determined by their MUN teacher and may be a zero. Students who wait until late in the school year to recognize schedule conflicts may have no make up conference available and may have to accept a zero for the MUN conference that they miss. This is also true for students who may miss more than one MUN conference. Students who miss more than one required MUN conference during a school year will be ineligible to enroll in MUN the following school year.

Often times this schedule can change based on circumstances entirely outside the control of anyone at SMCHS. Conference attendance is mandatory for all MUN students and will affect the student's academic grade. See conference requirements (next page) for more specifics. Students should plan ahead and avoid conflicts with sports, drama, band, dance, and other school activities. Students are responsible for watching the learning portal and MUN Boards (located in all MUN classrooms) for more specific information about conferences they plan to attend (signups, meetings, due dates, etc.) SAT Dates ACT Dates October 3 September 12 November 7 October 24 December 5 December 12 January 23 February 6 March 5 April 9 May 7 June 11 June 4

7 MUN Grades If students attend all of the required conferences and then attend extra conferences, these conferences will then count as part of their grade as well. Signing up to attend a conference is a commitment to attend that entire conference. Failure to fulfill that commitment will result in reduction of the student's academic grade and possibly other consequences at the MUN advisor's discretion. Don t let the title optional fool you! These conferences are optional until you sign up for them; they then become required for you! Students will receive a grade of 100% for a gavel or best delegate award, 96% for outstanding, 92% for commendation, and 88% or lower for no award or research award only. When there is no distinction between the levels of the award students will receive a 92%. If the student misses part of a conference their grade will be reduced proportional to the amount of conference time missed. (If the student misses one hour of a ten hour conference their grade will be reduced ten percent. A grade of 88% would be marked down to 78%) Lunch time is not counted as conference time but the awards ceremony is considered conference time. If the student can win an award despite having missed part of the conference they will still get points off but will still receive a grade of A-. Students must attend the entire day of school the day prior to and the day after a conference. MUN students are not to take a day off to catch up on their school work. Make sure that you plan ahead and get your homework for other classes done BEFORE you go to the conference. DO NOT ask your teachers for extensions or special consideration because you spent the weekend at an MUN conference. These rules apply for all conferences. (Especially long weekend conferences and extended away conferences such as UC Berkeley and London) Students who do not win any award during the school year are ineligible to continue in MUN the following year. MUN Conference Grading Rubric A Won an award at the conference, with no major behavioral issues (Note that a research award doesn t get you an A ) Commendation = A- Outstanding = A Gavel or Best Delegate = A+ B Attended the entire conference with active participation throughout C Any one of these items will cause you to get this grade: Failed to attend the entire conference (attended at least 70% of the conference) Had a prohibited item (cell phone, homework, magazine, etc.) out during the conference Out of dress code at any point in the conference Excessive trips out of committee (restrooms, snack bar, etc.) Not actively participating in the conference (sitting in the back, not raising your placard, socializing during caucus, etc.) D or F Major behavior issues at the conference, or failure to attend the entire conference (less than 70%) Zero Did not attend a mandatory conference. Be aware that. If you are out of delegate dress you will receive a Dean s detention for dress code. You may be asked to leave the conference and not return until you are dressed properly. If your cell phone is seen or heard during committee you will receive a Dean s detention for having a cell phone. In addition, your cell phone may be confiscated for the weekend. Any student that receives the grade of C or lower more than once during the school year will not be eligible to participate in the MUN program the following school year. If you leave the site of an MUN conference or break any of the rule in the MUN handbook you will be given a referral.

8 Hi MUN Parents! Every year MUN hosts the Father Daughter Dance for all of our female students to celebrate an evening with their fathers, grandfathers, uncles or other special people in their lives in the Moiso Family Pavilion. A big thank you again to our generous donors last year! If you would like to participate in this year s event the MUN program and its students would greatly appreciate it! We are in need of monetary support and would deeply appreciate contributions. Please click on the link below to fill out the parent volunteer form: MUN Parent Volunteer Form If you are able to make a monetary contribution to our efforts then please send your contribution made payable to SMCHS MUN to Santa Margarita Catholic High School Attn: John Remmell Antonio Parkway RSM, CA remmellj@smhs.org Thank you, as always, for all of the support that you have given to the MUN program throughout this year. We of course would not be able to plan such events to support our students without your contributions and efforts. Sincerely, SMCHS MUN
