1 3 5 December The aim of the annual National Science (Vijyoshi) Camps is to provide a forum for interactions between bright young students and leading researchers in various branches of science and mathematics. With boundaries between disciplines fast disappearing, these camps serve as an ideal platform for the young participants to get an exciting global viewpoint of questions relating to basic sciences as well as application oriented themes. As in the previous meetings, a comprehensive programme has been designed for the participants. This includes thought provoking lectures followed by a round of discussion at the end of each day's programme. Apart from all this, the previous meetings have ultimately served to motivate and inspire the participants by bringing them together, in what is hoped will be their first step towards a career in research in the basic sciences and mathematics. 6 Anil Kumar is currently a Professor at IIT Bombay, in the Department of Chemistry, Center for excellence in Nanoelectronics, National Center for Photovoltaic Research and Education and National Center for Excellence in Technologies for Internal Security. His group's research interest are in the area of continuous flow processes and printable optoelectronic devices based on conjugated polymers. In this direction, the main focus is on the development of handheld explosive sensors, electrochromic devices, thin film optoelectronic devices and transparent conductor etc. They have developed a state of the art continuous flow process Anil Kumar lab and also conduct regular training programs and workshops in Continuous Flow Process to train the next generation of human resources in this important emerging technology. Apart from research, his other hobbies are teaching, sports, magic and music. He has developed an outreach program based on "Science & Magic" to promote teaching and practice of science among students of different level. Magic and Science: The Art of "ACTIVE" Learning and Research Abstract: By Anil Kumar Dept. of Chemistry, Center for Excellence in nanoelectronics and National Center for Photovoltaic Research and Education, IIT Bombay Have you ever wondered how one thinks about research and how one gets scientific ideas to work on. How serendipities happen? Why serendipities do not happen around us? Do you often feel that you could have done wonderful research if you were born a century earlier? Do you feel that most of the high impact research has already been done and there is nothing much left to discover any more. Do you feel lost when people say that this is the age of Nanotechnology and previous century was the age of Polymers? If yes, then you should attend this talk. This talk is primarily designed for young and upcoming science and engineering students who want to pursue or are pursuing research as career. I will address some of these issues and will use MAGIC TRICKS to answer few. Talk will take some classical examples of research breakthrough from history and discuss how and why these evolved and what it takes to do breakthrough research. Prof. Anil Kumar will also discuss examples wherein knowledge was a boon and examples where knowledge was a bane. This talkwill also leave you with many research ideas which are still looking for solutions and hopefully one of you will come out with the right solution in near future. He will use magic tricks based on scientific principles to invoke discussion on how to think scientifically and how to be the most sought after scientist o rengineer. He will also teach you many of the magic tricks which you can perform anytime anywhere. There will be many more magic tricks which will be pure amusement. 6

8 The viscosity of a glass of bacteria-laden water goes up if I kill the bacteria. Little bits of wire on a vibrating surface can form a flock and migrate. Catalyst-tipped colloids seek out their reactant and signal to each other. The nucleus of a cell sitting on a polymer pad rotates spontaneously. These disparate weird phenomena all take place in Active Matter -- in which energy is injected directly to the individual constituents, which transduce it into organised movement. I will talk about this new paradigm for mechanics and fluctuations in living materials, and highlight our group's achievements. BIO: born Lucknow, 1957; education: High School -- The Sriram Ramaswamy Modern School, New Delhi 1973; BS (high hons) University of Maryland 1977; PhD University of Chicago Career: Postdoc, U Penn ; on the faculty of the Dept of Physics, Indian Institute of Science, 1986-present; Professor since on leave as Centre Director of the TIFR Centre for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Hyderabad.
