1 Tuesday, October 4, 2016 Congratulations to Scott McGrady, Janet Boltjes, and Dena Long! MCEC Bright Ideas $1,000 Grant Winner In recognition of World War I s centenary, Mr. McGrady s students will collaborate to make a quilt related to the sacrifices made by the military effort as well as the home front effort. This activity will support the course unit on All Quiet on the Western Front (a novel). Janet Boltjes, librarian, is collaborating with Scott McGrady next semester when his students do a research project. Julie Fear and Dena Long (media assistants) are helping with the project. Varsity Football Game has moved to Thursday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. against Dutch Fork. This Thursday night is Think PINK against Cancer!

Lexington Cat's Paw Yearbook Staff received an All-State Plaque of Excellence by the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association for judging of the 2016 Yearbook Countdown. Only two Division IV Schools in the state received this title. Congratulations Wildcats! Congratulations to the LHS Marching Band! This past Saturday, the marching band competed in the Swamp Classic at River Bluff High School. The CatBand placed 3 rd in class 5-A and won best color guard. In addition, the band received the highest score for visual performance in class 5-A and the percussion section finished 2 nd. Calling all Tech-Savy girls, coders, gamers, and web divas! Parents and Students, If your student has more than 3 unexcused absences for a quarter class please see Mr. Verburg ASAP to make up your seat time so you are eligible for credit for the class. If you have more than 3 unexcused absences you will receive an "FA" (failed due to attendance) as a grade regardless of how well you do in the class. College Visit New York University Wednesday, October 5 Conference Room Visit A representative from the above college will be visiting with LHS to answer any questions. If you would like to visit with the representative come by the counseling office to receive a pass. Get Registered to V Young Democrats and Teenage Republicans will be hosting a v te re is ra io event this Wednesday, October 5 in the computer lab in the Learning Commons during all three ILT blocks. Any student that is 18 years old or will turn 18 on or before Tuesday, November 8 is eligible to vote in this year's election. Students must have their driver's license and social security numbers in order to complete the online form. The deadline to register is Saturday, October 8 so make sure to come register this Wednesday! 4 The LHS AP Art students will be selling original glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts Thursday, October 6 and Friday, October 7 at the Main Office entrance, Counseling entrance, Bus Loop and outside of C-Hall. Each doughnut is $0.50 or $5 for a dozen! All profits help with the Spring LHS AP Art Show. Beginning, Monday, October 10, come to the Learning Commons and pick up a form. You will use your ipad and will need to have downloaded a QR code reader, such as Kaywa or inigma, to play. Work on it during ILT and complete the form by Friday, October 14. Prizes will be awarded! See if you can catch em all! On Friday, October 14 come into the Learning Commons for FUN FRIDAY, with a photo booth and coloring available during all ILTs. Don t forget to get a pass! 5 The Key Club is collecting donations to send to our troops who have been deployed to Afghanistan recently from McEntire AFB. Listed below are requested items. 1. Snacks chips, cookies, crackers, beef jerky, slim jims, etc. (snack size is best) 2. Candy no chocolate or anything that will melt easily 3. Books and Magazines (can be used) 4. DVDs do not have to be new clean out your cabinet! 5. Coffee 6. Baby wipes 7. Playing Cards Students in 9 or 10 grade interested in applying for the two weeks summer programs or the Residential High School at the South Carolina Governor's for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, SC need to meet with Dr. Kinard in C101 from 3:30 5 p.m. every Tuesday in October. Next Test: November 30 VFW s Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veteran s of Foreign Wars (VFW s) premier scholarship program. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. This year s theme is, My Responsibility To America. Distinguished Young Woman Scholarship Program All Junior girls are invited to a meet and greet on Tuesday, October 11 at 7 p.m. at the Starbucks in Saluda Pointe and on Sunday, October 16 at 3 p.m. at Moes in Lexington. College Fair 2016 Lexington High School, River Bluff High School, and Gray Collegiate Academy will offer a joint College Fair, to be held at Lexington High School on Tuesday, October 25 from 6:30 8:30 p.m. This fair, also known as Ed-Op (Educational Opportunities Day) is open to all juniors and seniors and their parents, and will be held in the LHS Cafeteria. Approximately 65 colleges, universities, and career schools will be on hand to discuss opportunities available on their campuses. Juniors/seniors and their parents from both schools are asked to park either on the Main Office side of the campus, the bus parking lot, LTC, or the gym lots, as the parking lot next to Old Farm Road is reserved parking for the College representatives. A list of questions and tips about attending college fairs and getting the most out of this experience will be sent out to all juniors and seniors prior to the fair, and will be posted on the LHS Counseling website. Also, a list of colleges and universities that will be attending will be posted soon. Junior and seniors may want to consider pre-printing labels with your name, address, and possible major to bring to the fair with you as colleges usually have an information card for you to complete so that they can stay in contact with you.
