The Hokies are in search of its sixth straight top 10 finish at the NCAA Championships, a streak that began with a 10th place finish in 2013 in Des Moines. This will be Tech s second tournament under the direction of head coach Tony Robie but the first as full-time head coach. As interim head coach last season, Robie guided the Hokies to sixth place finish in St. Louis. Virginia Tech s four freshman are the most in program history. This year marks the third time in program history that the Hokies have had two or more seeds slotted at No. 3 or higher. Tech Tidbits at NCAAs The Hokies have had at least one wrestler reach All-American status at the last six NCAA Championships, the 11th-longest active streak in the nation. Redshirt junior Zack Zavatsky s 18 bonus point wins are the fourth-most in the 184-pound field. The Hokies nine qualifiers are tied for the most at the tournament with Iowa, Missouri, NC, Oklahoma and Penn. Lehigh and Ohio both brought 10 qualifiers to Cleveland. Redshirt sophomore David McFadden is one of 10 wrestlers to enter the tournament with an undefeated record. Virginia Tech is one of only six schools with five or more first time qualifiers. Hokies Bring 9 To The Land Virginia Tech s nine NCAA qualifiers are its most since it also qualified nine wrestlers in The program record is 10 qualifiers set in Redshirt senior Jared Haught, the third seed at 197 pounds, is only the 14th Virginia Tech wrestler to qualify for nationals four times. Tech has had No. 2 seeds in back-toback seasons as redshirt sophomore David McFadden, seeded second at 165, follows Joey Dance, the No. 2 seed at 125 last season. Redshirt freshman Kyle Norstrem earned an at-large at 125 pounds after battling through a season that saw him face 14 opponents in this year s field at nationals. Fellow freshmen Brent Moore (141), Hunter Bolen (174) and Andrew Dunn (285) join Norstrem as Hokies that qualified for NCAAs in their rookie season. Redshirt junior Zack Zavatsky, the No. 6 seed at 184, makes his third trip to NCAAs in as many seasons with the Hokies while redshirt senior Dennis Gustafson, the No. 9 seed at 133, returns to nationals for the first time since his true freshman season in Redshirt junior Ryan Blees punched his ticket to NCAAs for the first time and earned a national seed after cutting down to 149 pounds after following winter break and going 16-3 down the stretch. Robie s First Season Success In his first season as head coach, Robie has continued the Hokies run of success in the ACC and on the national stage. Robie recently led the Hokies to its second straight ACC Championship, a final ranking of No. 10 in the NWCA Coaches Poll and a 14-3 record in dual meets where Robie started five freshmen for a majority of the season. His total wins ranks second and his winning percentage (.824) ranked third in ACC history for a head coach in his debut season. Robie s.824 winning percentage is the highest for a rookie head coach in Virginia Tech s history, surpassing Tom Brands.800 first season winning percentage in Robie s 14 victories ranks second in program history behind Brands 16 wins in the At the ACC Championship, Robie coached seven finalists and four Hokies to individual titles. He was recently named as one of eight semifinalists for the Theraworx NWCA National Coach of the Year award. McFadden Still Undefeated After winning both of his matches by major decision en route to the ACC title at 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore David McFadden comes to Cleveland with a perfect 31-0 record. He s the first Virginia Tech wrestler since Scott Justus in to finish the regular season undefeated. McFadden returns to the NCAA Championships after a redshirt season where he recovered from offseason surgery on his knee. He burst onto the scene as the No. 14 seed as a true freshman at NCAAs in 2016 where he placed sixth, despite tearing his ACL during the tournament. Coaching Staff Brings NCAA Finals Pedigree Virginia Tech legend Devin Carter is still the only Hokie to reach the national finals, a feat he accomplished at 141 pounds in This season, with multiple potential finalists in the lineup, the Hokies will have experience in their corner as four Tech coaches have appeared in the NCAA finals. Head coach Tony Robie was the third seed when he finished second at NCAAs in 1997, assistant coach Jared Frayer was a national finalist at Oklahoma in 2002 at 149 and director of performance Tyler Graff reached the finals in 2014 at 133 for Wisconsin. Assistant coach Frank Molinaro was a two-time finalist at Penn and was the national champion at 149 pounds in Jared Haught - The People s Champ Redshirt senior Jared Haught comes to Cleveland as a two-time All-American, two-time ACC champion and the No. 3 seed in the tournament at 197 pounds. Haught boosted his seed by defeating NC s Michael Macchievello, the No. 4 seed, in two of his last of his last three matches including a 6-4 win in the ACC title bout in TB-2. In the last two weeks of the season, Haught became only the third Virginia Tech wrestler to be ranked number one in Intermat s individual rankings. A mechanical engineering major and the 2017 ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Haught has job lined up with Corning Inc. in Christiansburg upon graduating in May. Robie led the Hokies to the team title at the ACC Championship and a sixth-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Championships in St. Louis Tech s fifth-straight top-10 finish at nationals. Robie has been an integral member of the Virginia Tech wrestling staff for 11 seasons, serving as associate head coach since joining the Hokies in 2006 before assuming interim head coach duties for the ACC and NCAA Championships this season. A former head coach at Binghamton University, Robie was a two-time All-America selection and an NCAA runner-up as a student-athlete at Edinboro University. His resume also includes assistant coaching tenures at, West Virginia and his alma mater. Serving as the top assistant under former head coach Kevin Dresser, Robie helped elevate the profile of the Virginia Tech wrestling program since arriving in Blacksburg in as associate head coach. Since that first season, the Hokies have gone on to win three ACC Dual Meet Championships, three ACC tournament championships and finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships five times. He s also helped recruit and coach 17 ACC champions and 14 All-Americans. I m excited about the opportunity to lead the wrestling program at Virginia Tech, Robie said. I have a tremendous appreciation for the high expectations at Virginia Tech and embrace that challenge. So many student-athletes and other individuals have contributed to the ascent of this program, and we welcome the opportunity to continue having Virginia Tech wrestling compete at the highest level and hopefully achieve our ultimate goal. Robie came to Blacksburg after serving as the head coach at Binghamton University in New York. Robie took over a program that had been discontinued after the school year because of budget constraints. Before taking over at Binghamton, he was an assistant coach for four seasons at the University of. In seven years as a Division I assistant coach prior to coming to Blacksburg, Robie helped coach 23 All-Americans, nine Academic All- Americans and one national champion. As the Wolverines top assistant coach, Robie recruited three top-10 classes, including the No. 2-ranked class in His one-on-one work with student-athlete Ryan Bertin culminated with Bertin s 2003 NCAA championship the school s first national champion in 18 years. In all, s team earned national top-10 status all four years that Robie was a coach there. His dedication and influence off the mat resulted in the wrestling team winning the 2003 community service award at the school. A world-class wrestler in his own right, Robie racked up a record on the collegiate mat and was a two-time All-American. A two-time captain for former Olympic gold medalist Bruce Baumgartner at Edinboro University, Robie was a three-time Eastern Wrestling League champion and a three-time Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion. As a senior, Robie led the Fighting Scots to a sixth-place national finish the highest in school history and was the national runner-up. In 2008, he was inducted into the Edinboro Sports Hall of Fame. The Erie, Pennsylvania native was a Dean s List student at Edinboro and received the school s Academic Achievement Award before graduating with a bachelor s degree in criminal justice in Robie brings strong ties to the eastern wrestling hotbed, as he also served as an assistant coach at West Virginia ( ) and Edinboro ( ). Robie and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Christiansburg with their three children Nate, Luke and Jake.
