Significant time will be devoted to Q & A. Participants should bring a Wi-Fi capable laptop to access their college s reports. Join this session for an analysis of what selected Achieving the Dream leader colleges have learned and a list of next steps for engaging entering students. 2. Four colleges will share how they developed high school partnerships to create dual credit programs, and the essential support structure needed for dual-enrolled students. 3. How Providing Free Online Resources Helps Entering Students Allison Martin, Director, Institutional Effectiveness Initiatives, Bossier Parish Community College (LA) Moderator: Since its inception, community colleges have been about access the opportunity to attend postsecondary education. In today s world of 24-7 news outlets, social media, and the answer to almost any question on your phone, access to learning has been expanded to anytime, anywhere. At Bossier Parrish Community College, learning continues after hours as students can participate in expanded quizzes, full gradebook, and lecture videos through their Open Campus Classic sites. 4. Student Orientation: Forming a Connection Early On Countance Anderson, Director of Registration and Orientation, Jackson State Community College (TN) Michelle Schutt, Associate Vice President of Student Services, College of Southern Idaho (ID) Moderator: Evelyn Waiwaiole Orientation is a key component to positively starting entering students college experiences. Two colleges with mandatory orientation for new-tocollege students will discuss how their colleges orient students, data regarding its impact, and how orientation complements the colleges intake processes. AACC Pathways 101 Jo-Carol Fabianke, Vice Chancellor for Academic Success, Alamo Colleges (TX) Kay McClenney, Senior Advisor to the President/CEO & Pathways Project, American Association of Community Colleges Pathways is the buzz word in higher education right now. Learn how the American Association of Community Colleges and its Pathways Project partners define it, why guided pathways are needed now, and how colleges can advance their work on designing guided pathways for their students. 2. Retaining Targeted Student Groups Robert Harper, Executive Dean, Office of Student Engagement and Retention, Eastfield College (TX) Kimberly Lowry, Associate Vice President, Academic Affairs and Student Success, Eastfield College (TX) Ruben Saenz, Director of Student Success and Retention, GateWay Community College (AZ) Moderator: Tonjua Williams When reviewing student-level data, sometimes it is important to focus specialized retention efforts on targeted groups of students. Two colleges, which have implemented retention strategies on different groups of students males and deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) will share the data that led them to implement these programs, their essential components, and emerging results. 3. The First-Year Experience Tomeika Bennett, Academic Program Director, Greenville Technical College (SC) Kim Dupre, Associate Dean of Student Success, Richard Bland College of the College of William & Mary (VA) Elibariki Nguma, Director of Student Activities and Wellness, South Texas College (TX) Moderator: First-Year Experience programs are transforming the way entering students experience college. A welcoming environment, college-wide partnerships among the different student services departments, peer-to-peer mentoring, student activities, and engaged faculty are some of the components that promote a stronger student connection with the college while reducing roadblocks that might deter their success.
