4 Beginner s Crochet Class Have you always wanted to learn how to crochet but didn t know where to start? The Auburn Public Library will be hosting FREE crochet classes for absolute beginners! In these classes, you will learn three basic stitches: chain stitch, single crochet and double crochet! Each class will consist of two 1 ½ hour sessions. Ages 10 and up: Please register at libraryevents@auburnalabama.org for one class to secure your spot! Classes are capped at 6 students, so don t delay! What you need to bring: One crochet hook (size G or larger) and one skein of light colored, medium-weight yarn. The Auburn Public Library is a stop on her book tour for her newest book, The Almost Sisters, available July 11. Books will be available for purchase at the event, and Ms. Jackson will be signing after her reading. Saturday 7/22 1:00 2:00 p.m. Auburn Public Library New York Times Bestselling novelist Joshilyn Jackson is the author of seven novels and a novella: The Opposite of Everyone, Someone Else s Love Story, gods in Alabama, Between, Georgia, The Girl Who Stopped Swimming, Backseat Saints, A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty, and the novella My Own Miraculous. Her books have been translated into a dozen languages, have won SIBA s novel of the year, have been a three-time #1 Book Sense Pick, have won Georgia Author of the Year twice, and have been shortlisted thrice for the Townsend prize. A former actor, Jackson reads the audio versions of her novels; her work in this field has been nominated for the Audie Award, was selected by AudioFile Magazine for their best of the year list, has made the 2012 Audible All-Star list for highest listener ranks/reviews, and garnered three Listen Up Awards from Publisher s Weekly. In 2012 Jackson began reading the audio versions of books written by other novelists, beginning with Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer. She serves on the board of Reforming Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to providing theatre infused liberal arts education to women who are under carceral control in Georgia. Through their education-in-prison and reentry programs, Reforming Arts fosters the development of critical and creative thinking skills, encouraging students to build livable lives. Joshilyn volunteers inside Lee Arrendale State Prison, teaching creative writing courses and facilitating a new literary magazine/newsletter that the students are producing. 6

7 Teen Programs Gamers Society It s Game On at the Auburn Public Library. Computers will be reserved in Youth Services for Minecraft, and the Programming Room will be open for Pokémon, board games, and video games. Gamers are responsible for the items they bring. Games must be rated E, E10, or T, no rated M games. The Auburn Public Library will provide materials for video game play. Gamers must have a valid Minecraft account to play. 14 Become A Volunteer A Rewarding Experience Are you interested in volunteering at the Auburn Public Library? Volunteering is a rewarding and valuable experience. As a volunteer, you will actively contribute to the mission and success of the library. Volunteers are special to the library, and we make every effort to ensure a positive, pleasant, and productive service environment. How to Apply Applications are accepted as follows: Spring (January May) Volunteer Season: Applications are accepted during the month of November. Interviews and orientations will take place in December. Summer (June August) Volunteer Season: Applications are accepted during the month of April. Interviews and orientations will take place in May. Fall (September December) Volunteer Season: Applications are accepted during the month of July. Interviews and orientations will take place in August. Who Are Our Volunteers & What Do They Do Our volunteers reflect our community. We recruit students, library patrons, people involved with community organizations, and those who want to make a meaningful contribution to the library. Our volunteers help in many areas of the library; volunteers provide assistance with crafts and programs, shelve books, and assist with department maintenance. We invite you to fill out an application if you are interested in becoming a volunteer. 16 The Auburn Public Library wants you to take the SUMMER LEARNING CHALLENGE. This summer, you do you. The rules are simple: 1. Register at the library in person or online to let us know that you are in! 2. Read or listen for 20 minutes a day. 3. Set at least 1 learning goal for yourself.
