1 SEARK SOUNDER STUDENT AFFAIRS DIVISON Commencement Ceremony May 12th Southeast Arkansas College will be holding their 2017 Spring Graduation Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Pine Bluff Convention Center s main auditorium. The ceremony will begin at 7:00pm and all graduates are to be at the convention center and checked in by 6:15pm. The Commencement speaker for that evening will be Dr. Maria Markham, Director of Arkansas Department of Higher Education. Rehearsal will be held at 10:00am on Friday, May 12th also at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. Although the final deadline has passed for submitting an application to participate in the commencement ceremony, students can still submit an application and their degree will be mail to the address on the application. There will be a $15.00 fee for Phi Theta Kappa honor stole and tassel, which can be paid at the cashiers office. Have your receipt ready for pick up for your stole and tassel at the Barnes and Noble Campus Bookstore the week of graduation. If you are a veteran of the United States Armed Forces and would like to be recognized during Volume 2 Issue 5 May 2017 commencement, please contact the Registrar s office for verification. All students completing the required curriculum during the 2017 semester and receiving an Associates Degree or Technical Certificate are eligible for honors designation. 2 Page 2 D o l l a r w ay an d D re w C e nt r a l S e n i or s v i s i t S E A R K The Southeast Arkansas College campus was graced with the presence of several Dollarway High School seniors and with one coming from Warren and one from Rison, on Friday, April 7th. These incredible young adults attended one of SEARK s last Spring College Preview Days of the year. Each student was offered with important admission information and the ability to register online if they chose. Ms. Barbara Dunn of Recruitment opened the event, which was followed by the college s president, Dr. Stephen Hilterbran, who welcomed the assembly with encouragement and assurance of SEARK s dedication to each student who walks onto the SEARK campus. Highlights of the event included a tour through the department of each student s interest, speaking with those who have or are currently attending SEARK College, lunch sponsored by Domino s Pizza and the campus s own Shark Attack Café. Thursday s College Preview Day concluded with information from a selection of the SEARK staff and faculty. In addition, Ms. Gail Nelson presented information on how to attend college debt free. Friday s College Preview Day featured more seniors from Pine Bluff High School and Dumas High School. Southeast Arkansas College is committed to offering the best education possible for each dollar spent.

3 A Message from the Vice President: Page 3 Lunch & Learn There will not be a scheduled Lunch & Learn for the month of May. The next Lunch & Learn will be held in September of the Fall Semester These lunch meetings are designed to educate and empower each of our students with the knowledge and information to better equip them during their educational journey here at SEARK. Graduation Expo May 8th Scott Kuttenkuler- Vice President of Student Affairs The Spring 2017 will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 in the College Hall Commons area from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Free professional graduates portraits will be take at that time. This year is moving fast so stop in and get ready for the best day of your life. 4 Page 4 Radiology Technology Students Attend Conference The SEARK School of Radiologic Technology students attended the Arkansas Society of Radiologic Technologist convention from 3-29 to 3-31 held in Fort Smith Arkansas. There they competed in the essay competition and quiz bowl. They competed against students from Arkansas State University, Baptist, North Ark, St. Vincent, UA Fayetteville, UAFS, and UAMS. Kaylee Johnson (Dewitt) took 3rd place in the essay competition. Darline Blount (Pine Bluff), Shanta Williams (Pine Bluff) and Cristina Heredia (Star City) took 5 th place out of 42 teams and Kaylee Johnson (Dewitt), Jessica Reynolds (New Edinburg) and Kristen Cazer (Dewitt) took 6th out of 42 teams. SEARK College to Participate in Business Expo Be sure to stop by the SEARK College information booth at this year s Business Expo on May 4th at the Pine Bluff Convention Center. The theme this year for the Expo will be, May the 4th be with you. This fun filled Star Wars theme will be reminiscent of the original Star Wars graphics along with free giveaways and a wealth of information detailing the Southeast Arkansas College programs, classes and opportunities. The doors will open at 10:00am so come early and stay late. The 2017 Business Expo will also showcase some of Pine Bluff s local flavor, businesses and business opportunities. Kennedy Travis Peyton Bishop Shirley Sanders Speaks at CCM Christian Campus Ministries held their April meeting on Thursday the 6th where Bishop Shirley Sanders spoke on The Three C s, Choices, Chances and Changes. She further commented on making the right choices, not taking the wrong chances and being open to the right changes. The event was well attended by students and staff alike. Lunch was provided by Greater Deliverance Church.

5 Students Hold Hearing Voices Simulation Page 5Page 5 The Hearing Voices Simulation is a Psychiatric Exercise featuring Dr. Pat Deegan and developed by the Utah CIT Program. This Training was originally designed for law enforcement to teach them how to deal with people that hear distressing voices. The Simulation exercise is one in which voices that a schizophrenic hears were recorded exactly as they were heard. In a controlled environment, the LPN/Paramedic to RN and senior level Generic RN students were divided into two groups. The first group of students wore head phones connected to MP3 players that played the voices while going through everyday tasks at 5 established stations. The tasks ranged from checking out a library book to filling out a job application and making a minor purchase. The second group of students were assigned as helpers at the specified stations. After the first group of students rotated through all stations the groups switched and the students that were previously hearing voices were then assigned as helpers while the other students wore the head phones and listened to the recorded voices. The goals of the experience were to assist students in understanding the day to day challenges that people with psychiatric disabilities face, learn about the subjective experience of hearing voices that are distressing, become more empathetic toward those hearing distressing voices, and change clinical practices to better address the needs of people who hear voices. After a period of debriefing, students expressed achievement of each goal and now have a better understanding of what it would be like to hear voices. CCM to Host Head Coach Monte Coleman Monte Coleman, the head coach of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Football Team, will be speaking at the Christian Campus Ministries meeting Thursday, May 4th from 12:15pm - 1:00pm. The meeting will be located in the McGeorge Seminar Room. Lunch will be provided Coach Coleman, is a seasoned coaching veteran who has been associated with the UAPB program since 2003, and is in his eighth season as head coach of the Golden Lions. In his eight years as head coach, Coleman led the Golden Lions to their first ever outright Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship in 2012, guiding his team to a overtime win over Jackson State, in Birmingham, Ala. During his tenure at UAPB, Coleman has produced 33 all-conference performers, two Defensive Player of the Year honorees and two Freshman of Year award winners. Coleman took over the reins as head football coach in 2008 at UAPB, after serving the previous two seasons (2006, 2007) as the team s defensive coordinator. Coleman s 16-year NFL career spanned over three decades: the 1970 s, the 1980 s and the 1990 s with the Redskins, making him one of three men to play at least 16 seasons with the franchise. Coach Coleman is also a member of First Assembly of God Church where he is an Associate Pastor and leads the men s Sunday morning class. 6 Page 6 Community Outreach Project The SEARK College Student Ambassadors delivered care packages to the residents at CASA Women s Shelter on March 17, The packages included toiletries; such as, soap, lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. This was an opportunity for the students to build a stronger relationship in the community and to give back to those in need. CASA, Inc. (Committee Against Spouse Abuse) is a private non-profit organization established to provide services to battered women and their children.
