1 Kappa State News Of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society Arkansas March 2016 Vol. 58, No. 2 Spring Prator Grant Goes to Lisa Deleon Contributed by Deborah Bratton, Kappa State Scholarship Committee Chairman Lisa Deleon, an elementary education major at the University of Central Arkansas, is the recipient of the Spring 2016 Agatha Prator Grant. She will be doing her student teaching experience at Jim Stone Elementary in Conway, Arkansas. In addition to her studies, she is active in campus affairs serving as president of the UCA Teachers of Tomorrow and an Ambassador for the College of Education. She also belongs to the International Literacy Association, the UCA Dance Team, and Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. In a recommendation, a UCA faculty member quoted Lisa s mentor teachers comments that they loved her commitment to their students and to teaching. Lisa plans to use grant money for school expenses such as paying for her teaching license and graduation fees as well as purchasing books and materials to use in her classroom. In the future she intends to pursue a master s degree in reading so she can become a Dyslexia Therapist or Literacy Coach. The Kappa State Scholarship Committee selects a grant recipient each fall and spring semester. To receive the $2500 grant, a student must be an Arkansas woman enrolled in an accredited education program that includes a student teaching experience. The grant is awarded during her semester of student teaching. As evidenced by this spring s recipient, worthy Arkansas teachers-to-be are being helped by DKG. DKG members should take pride in the support provided and promote the grant among college women in their area. Applications for the fall 2016 grant are due on April 1. Specific requirements and applications are available in the forms section of the Kappa State website (kappastate.weebly.com). To the Kappa State women who are being chosen to lead their chapters for the next two years congratulations and thanks for your willingness to serve. May you and your chapters grow and flourish together. 2 DKG Our Journey Together Candi s Comments: One of my favorite parts of my job as your president is visiting chapters around the state. I am always blessed to meet members who have extraordinary experiences and stories about teaching and DKG. I love sharing the story of Delta Kappa Gamma and the benefits of membership in this unique Society with others. Some members have told me that they were recipients of the Lucille Cornetet grant for professional development. They stated that they would not have been able to attend the seminar or conference had it not been for this support. I recently met some young teachers who received Kappa State scholarships and are seeking master s degrees. Other recipients are seeking or renewing National Board Certification. They express their gratitude for these gifts for which all members are eligible. One long-time member told me that she will always feel a sense of grateful indebtedness to DKG for having received a scholarship many years ago when she was pursuing her master s degree. Numerous members have told me that they had attended Kappa State Leadership Seminar long ago and would always remember that wonderful experience. Still too many of our members are unaware of the many benefits of their membership in DKG. Not too long ago I discovered that a member was in need of Emergency Funds, but she was unaware of this benefit. She has since received the $500 check from DKG International. All members who incur property damage due to weather phenomena or natural disaster are eligible for these funds. I know of no other professional organization that offers this kind of benefit. Dear members, we are part of an organization that truly cares for our well-being professional, personal, physical, social and spiritual. We are all on this journey and we are all on it together. I LOVE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA! The more I learn about it, the more I love it. I ll bet you do, too. DKG Candi Martin Kappa State President From the Kappa State Technology Committee: The latest tech tip is one of our member's blogs. Susan Gilley, Director of Instructional Technology at Harrison Public Schools, shares tech tidbits on her blog on a weekly basis when time allows.
