2 Jo Durso Retirement The English Department will be hosting a lunch to honor Jo Durso on the occasion of her recent retirement. The event will take place at 12:00 pm on Friday, May 3 at NBC Seafood Restaurant at 404 S. Atlantic Blvd. in Monterey Park. Healthy Relationships Workshop Main Campus. Thursdays: April 9 th, April 16 th, April 23 rd, and April 30 th, 1:30-3:30 in C2-122B. Participants will explore issues such as healthy boundaries, power and control, gender roles, relationship role models, safety planning, and identifying behaviors in healthy and unhealthy relationships. Participants will also learn how to raise awareness regarding dating violence and acquaintance rape. Students who choose to participate in all four workshops will receive a workshop Certificate of Completion. 8 FACULTY MENTORS NEEDED FOR PROJECT MATCH Project MATCH is looking for faculty members to mentor the 50 Project MATCH 2013 interns. The program needs adjunct or full-time faculty from a variety of academic disciplines and non-classroom faculty such as counselors and librarians. Mentors will be required to attend an orientation session on Thursday, May 30 th in the evening and are then responsible for mentoring their intern throughout the Fall 2013 semester. Mentors are expected to work with their intern for approximately 3 hours per week during the fall semester. Intern activities include classroom observation, lesson plan preparation, and supervised teaching. Unfortunately faculty who teach only online or weekend classes cannot serve as mentors. Please look for mentor applications in your inbox in early March. Workshop Descriptions Know Your Library: A scavenger hunt guides student to library services and illustrates the library s layout and the organization of materials. Research Boot Camp: It s time to get students research skills in shape! Students gain useful strategies on how to read and understand an assignment prompt, as well as identify the right sources needed to complete the assignment. In other words, we ll be flexing students research muscles! Got Books: Yes, the library actually has books and you can find them! Through hands-on exploration students learn the organization of library materials and how to use the library catalog to find books and DVDs. Got Articles: Research is all about articles and guess what? The library has everything students need to find all kinds of articles. Students are introduced to our article databases and practice finding various types of articles. Smart Google Searching: Do you control Google or does Google control you? Google s awesome, but like all superheroes you must learn to harness this powerful information tool! Learn helpful tips to get better and credible websites. Cite Right: You ve found information, but now how do you cite it? How do you know your paper is plagiarism free? Students are introduced to the concept of citation using MLA, review examples of plagiarism, and create an MLA citation. Go Digital with E-Books: Everybody s going digital and you can too! Want to learn how to access ELAC s electronic book collection like a pro? Then come join us as we explore our ebook catalog, as well as Google books. One-on-One Research Help: Encourage students struggling with your research project to attend! Limited to 10 students, in this workshop, a librarian will provide individualized help. Students need an assignment prompt or instructions to be admitted. 9
