12 Page Six MINUTES March 13, 2017 Old Business None New Business Secondary Foreign Language Instructional Materials Debra Arvon presented and reviewed the following Secondary Foreign Language textbooks selected: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) Foreign Language print and online textbooks for middle school grades 7-8 Spanish I Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) Foreign Language print and online textbooks for high school grades 9-12 Spanish I, II, III, IV Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) Foreign Language print and online textbooks for high school grades 9-12 French I, II, III She presented the names of the members of the selection committee and introduced Elizabeth Marsicano, foreign language teacher at Washington High School, who further reviewed the selection process of the committee. She noted that the committee liked not only the written content, but also the technology component. Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, a motion was made by Laurie Ogden, seconded by Kathy Skinner and carried, to place the listed textbooks on review until the March 27, 2017, Board meeting. These textbooks will be available for review at the Central Office and at each of the secondary schools. Dr. Gibson asked that an be sent to Mr. George Rutherford, President of the local chapter of the NAACP, to invite anyone who has a vested interest in cultural diversity to come in and review the materials.
13 Page Seven MINUTES March 13, 2017 Mr. Sudduth asked Dr. Gibson for a presentation on where we are for next year regarding textbook adoptions. At 7:30 p.m. a motion was made by Gary Kable, seconded by Kathy Skinner and carried, to hold an Executive Session regarding personnel. Action was expected to be taken when returning to open session. At 8:03 p.m. a motion was made by Laurie Ogden, seconded by Kathy Skinner and carried, to close the Executive Session and return to open session. A motion was made by Laurie Ogden, seconded by Kathy Skinner and unanimously carried, to deny Mark Guzick s requested leave of absence. A motion was made by Gary Kable, seconded by Kathy Skinner and unanimously carried, to uphold the Superintendent s recommendation that Roger Higgs be suspended for ten days without pay from March 2 15, There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by the President at 8:05 p.m.
