5 ALABAMA is the nation s sixth poorest state, and nearly 900,000 Alabamians - including 300,000 children - live in poverty. The poverty line is just $24,257 a year for a family of four, and those neighbors have far less than they need to meet basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter. Alabama Possible removes barriers to prosperity through research, engaged learning, poverty simulations, and promoting college access and success. We support and create educational equity through the following program areas: Research Our programs and advocacy work are data-driven, and we conduct thorough research on topics connected to our mission. We compile and summarize our research on an annual basis through the Poverty Data Sheet, which highlights statewide poverty rates and data related to educational attainment, employment, and food security. Engaged Learning Our higher education alliance facilitates this work and identifies innovative approaches to teaching and learning. We promote relationship-building between these partners through statewide events such as our annual Lifetime of Learning and Hungry for Justice conferences. Poverty Simulations We facilitate poverty simulations, which are an experiential learning tool that helps educate community members about the barriers faced by families living in poverty. Participants learn about the hardships and emotional toll experienced by low-income families. College Access and Success Our college access and success programs, the Blueprints College Success Initiative and Cash for College, build educational equity for low income, minority and first generation college-going students across the state of Alabama. Blueprints has worked with more than 4,000 underserved high school students in 12 high schools across Alabama. Nearly all our Blueprints graduates have been admitted to at least one postsecondary institution and earned more than $18 million in supplementary scholarships. Cash for College works to increase the number of students completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). During the school year, 60 percent of Birmingham City Schools students completed their FAFSA, up from 39 percent in In addition, 207 high schools participated in our Cash for College Alabama campaign.
