The Community West New York is an urban community with a proud and diverse range of cultures, traditions, and a diverse economic base. Its eastern boundary is on the Hudson River, giving easy access to the waterfront and New York City. The community has high expectations and aspirations for its schools. Located in one of the nation s most densely populated areas, West New York s square mile boasts two early childhood centers, six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The School Memorial High School is a comprehensive four-year school enrolling approximately 1900 students in grades nine through twelve. Our small learning academies structure consists of a Freshmen/Sophomore Academy and five upper classmen careerbased academies allowing students to graduate with a concentration in a specific subject area as well as a NJ High School diploma. The school opened in 1926 and is educationally committed to maximizing all students potential for success in an ever-changing world. Memorial High School is accredited by the New Jersey State Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Curriculum The academic program is organized on a nine-period day. Classes meet five days per week for 41 minutes. Courses carry a five-credit value and meet for 181 days. Additional credits are awarded for lab courses. A minimum of 120 credits is required for graduation. Graduation requirements include: 20 credits in Language Arts; 15 credits in Mathematics; 15 credits in Lab Science; 15 credits in Social Studies; 20 credits in Physical Education and Health; 5 credits in Visual and Performing Arts; 5 credits in Technology, Business, or Family & Consumer Science; 5 credits in World Languages, and 2.5 credits in Personal Finance or Economics.

2 College Courses (SUPA) or Syracuse University Project Advance Courses are offered in Calculus, American History, College Learning Strategies, Sociology, Italian, Web Design, Entrepreneurship, Presentational Speaking, Language Arts, and Gender & Literary Texts. Other College Courses offered through partnerships with Hudson Community College, Bergen Community College, New Jersey City University, Kean University and Fairleigh Dickenson University are Acting, Chemistry, Intermediate Computer Applications, Language Arts, Pre-Calculus, US History 2, Tomorrow s Teachers, Video Production, and Advanced Video Journal. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in Biology, Chemistry, Calculus, Language and Composition, Literature and Composition, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, U.S. History, French and Italian. Honors Courses (H) are offered in all academic areas and several non-academic genres College Prep Courses (CP) are offered in all academic areas. 3 Class rank is based on six semesters and includes all students, who have been Memorial High School students for three or more years. Final senior rank is based on seven semesters. Special Programs Project Alternative /Project Achievement is a unique program for seventh and eighth graders who will be at least fifteen by September of the current school year. The purpose of the program is to provide educational, vocational and supportive services to students who are potential dropouts. Special Needs program provides services to about 15% of our total high school population. It allows high school age, classified students the opportunity to fulfill their academic potential, to realize their importance as active citizens in the community, and to better socialize with their peers. Memorial High School is utilizing a resource consultation/collaboration model called Bridges: Center for Academic Resources & Student Support Services to support students; who are eligible for special education and related services, and their general education teachers. Memorial High School also offers in class support or ICS courses in core subject areas in order for classified students to learn in a least restrictive environment. Passes is program available to all ELL students ages 15-19, who have been assessed to be academically delayed. It is an upgraded, developmental, alternative bilingual program for ELL students with little or no formal education. Bilingual /ESL is a program made up of about 15% of our total student population. It is designed to initiate Limited English Proficient students in the process of learning English as their second language. It offers a variety of courses to cope with the individual needs of ESL students as well as help them in their progress towards mainstreaming into the regular English program. Performing Arts Academy is a program designed for students who show an interest in the conservatory approach to the performing arts. Classes taught by professional artists in the areas of dance, musical theatre, vocal music, dramatic literature and acting are provided, in order to create well rounded performers. Tomorrow s Teachers Academy is a program for junior and seniors sponsored by The Center for Education Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement (CERRA) in South Carolina. The curriculum will focus on three themes: Experiencing the Learner; Experiencing the Profession; and Experiencing the Classroom. STEAM Academy prepares our students, who will be the future green energy consumers, technicians, scientists, inventors and engineers, for the push towards alternative energies. We also focus on current energy consumption and its relation to future jobs, cost, and fuels.

4 Public Affairs Academy will offer a rigorous curriculum in public policy analysis and administration that will prepare students to assume leadership positions in government, business, and non-profit organizations. Business Academy will prepare our students for the business world. Students will explore courses such as Intro/Intermediate/Advanced Computers, Accounting, Marketing 1 and 2, Personal Finance, Economics and Everyday Law. SUPA is a partnership linking Syracuse University with Memorial High School. Qualified high school juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to enroll in Syracuse University courses for college and high school credit concurrently while on the Memorial High School campus.
