During this two day weekend event, students and teachers will make new friends, enjoy an intellectually stimulating program, and participate in fun recreational activities. All students and teachers will be housed in suites in a luxurious hotel. There will be student-run campaigns on behalf of Barack Obama, John McCain, and third party candidates. You will have an opportunity to make your voice heard by working for and voting for the candidate of your choice. Controversial State Propositions will be debated, including a constitutional amendment to limit marriage to one man and one woman. The Conference is free of charge for all students and teachers. It will be held in Coor Hall, Room 120 at ASU Tempe. For more details and a map, contact Karen Prosser at JSA at kprosser@jsa.org or 602/ You do not need to register in advance. But it would help in our planning if you let us know how many students and teachers will be attending. Some students come alone or with a few friends, while others attend with a busload of students and teachers from their school. Phoenix Hilton Suites Fall 2008 Newsletter 1

What is JSA? The Junior State of America (JSA) is a nationwide, nonpartisan, political education program for high school students. Founded in 1934, JSA is sponsored by The Junior Statesmen Foundation, in cooperation with high schools across the country. JSA chapters are school-sponsored clubs with faculty advisors. The educational philosophy of the organization is that students can best acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for active citizenship by running their own self-governing organization. continued on page 3 Fall 2008 Newsletter 2

3 Continued from page 2 JSA Motto: Democracy is not a spectator sport! During this school year, the Arizona Junior State will sponsor a conference at Arizona State University on Election 2008, Fall and Spring State Conventions on current issues, and a February simulation of the U.S. House and Senate. During the summer, Junior Statesmen sponsors a Symposium on Arizona leadership and politics, as well as academic Summer Schools on the campuses of Stanford, Georgetown, Yale and Princeton Universities. The establishment of the Arizona JSA program is funded by a major grant from the Melody Robidoux Foundation of Tucson. For more information contact: Junior Statesmen at 1015 N.
