From the Principal s Desk - By George Stone Spring has sprung! The weather is warming and winter is releasing its grip on us. Our thoughts dri from the day to day responsibili es of school, and we feel the overwhelming urge to just let everything go and get out and play. We are all suscep ble to Spring Fever. If you are the parent of a senior Read On! For seniors, Spring Fever can occasionally endanger gradua on, and parents need to be especially vigilant during these final months of the school year. If you are a senior parent, I strongly suggest that you take the following steps: 1. Make your reserva ons for the Senior Breakfast and Gradua on. Both the Breakfast and Gradua on will be held at Springs Church, 1515 Auto Mall Loop. The Breakfast will be 7:00 am on Friday, May 12th, and costs $20 per cket ( ckets must be purchased in advance.) Please make checks out to Aspen Valley High School. Gradua on will start promptly at 10:00 am on Wednesday, May 17th. Please contact Mrs. Geislinger ( ) to make your reserva ons for both events. 2. Contact your senior s mentor ( addresses are on the first page of your student s planner) to verify that they are passing all of their classes and have met all gradua on requirements. We have a number of seniors that have not submi ed documenta on of work or job shadowing experience and/or community service. These are two gradua on requirements that are difficult to take care of at the last minute, so being aware of where your student stands is very important. 3. Check College Grades. For parents of seniors enrolled in college classes, now is also the me to check on their academic status to ensure that they are on track to pass. Aspen Valley does not have access to these grades. Have your student log on to their college account or send their college teacher an Talk to your student about making good choices. It is unfortunate when a student makes a poor choice during the final months of the school year which results in consequences that endanger their gradua on. Spring Fever some mes causes students to make poor lifestyle choices. We have all read with sadness stories about students who make poor choices involving alcohol or drugs and driving which result in tragedy. Talk to your student about making wise choices. Spring is also the season for senior pranks. Pranks are great as long as they do not endanger others, damage property or disrupt the educa onal process. If your student is brainstorming about a way to leave Aspen Valley with a par ng gi, please review the guidelines above with them. Spring is a wonderful me of the year, and we are all excited to see our seniors approaching this major milestone in their lives. Let s all pull them just a li le bit closer during these final months, both to give them a loving hug and, also, to whisper in their ear words of wisdom and encouragement.

Tickets sold only in advance Where: Springs Church (the building formerly known as Phil Long Center) 1515 Auto Mall Loop Colorado Springs, CO Seniors will be celebrated during the 2017 Senior Breakfast May 12th, 7:00 a.m. - 8:45 a.m. Each senior will be highlighted by their Puma Teacher during the breakfast and recognized for their efforts, achievements, and growth during their Aspen Valley High School journey. A slide show presented by Karen Wasserman and her team of assistants will further spotlight your senior, which is always a favorite of students, parents, and staff. It s a show you won t want to miss! Caps & Gowns: For graduating seniors who will be walking on May 17th, caps and gowns will be distributed at the conclusion of the breakfast on May 12th. Be sure to open the gowns from the packaging and address the folds before graduation on May 17th. Should you decide to press your graduate s gown, take care to only use a cool steam setting on your iron. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at AVHS Graduation Information Date: Wednesday, May 17, 2017, 10:00 a.m. Practice: Tuesday, May 16, 2017, 9:00 a.m. Where: Springs Church (the building formerly known as Phil Long Center) 1515 Auto Mall Loop Colorado Springs, CO Graduates are asked to arrive at Springs Church on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, by 9:00 a.m. to practice. Both events, practice and graduation, will be held in the Main Auditorium, Dress can be casual and comfortable. Students will be released after rehearsal is complete, at or around 11:00 a.m. Graduates are asked to return to Springs Church on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, by 9:00 a.m. to prepare for the Commencement Program, which will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Dress beneath the graduation gown should be appropriate for the significance of the occasion. The program will end at 12:00 p.m. Diploma covers only will be distributed during the ceremony. Graduates who have properly checked out and given Mrs. Morrison the proper paperwork will receive their diplomas immediately after the ceremony. Students who have not properly checked out will have the opportunity to fill out the necessary paperwork on Wednesday. Diplomas will be available throughout the day following the ceremony. Activities count towards PE make-up participation! Tuesday, April 11th Rampart High School Pool 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Boat Regatta **Must dress appropriately! 4 Volume XVIII, Issue VII Puma Periodical Page 4 April is Hogwarts month at AVHS! We have a different, fun activity planned every week - a friendly competition between Puma classes. April 5th features AVHS s special version of Tug-o-War: Gryffindor (Strength & Courage) April 12th whip up a Potion - following a rubric: Slytherin (Cunning & Clever). April 21st race through a timed Scavenger Hunt: Ravenclaw (Intelligence, Wisdom). And, lastly, April 26th perform a little Lip Sinc: Hufflepuff (Dedication, Loyalty). Remember to ask your student this month what fun adventures they enjoyed in their Puma class this month! Student of the Week is going great - the winners are thrilled when their names are announced during each Wednesday s all-school assembly! We d like to thank parents for your donations of gift cards to congratulate and encourage the students who receive this award. If you would like to donate, please contact Mr. Bailey. For March, being a shortened month due to Spring Break, we congratulate: Gideon & Suzanne! As always, thank you for encouraging your student to strive for this prestigious award!

Eye rolls, snide remarks, comments muttered quietly, and doors being slammed tend to trigger a storm of emotions in parents and children alike. But getting caught up in the storm doesn't help it to pass and can actually make it worse. Experts agree staying calm helps you to ignore the bait and end the backtalk/banter. Easier said than done, right? This webinar will provide information on tips and tools to stay out of the storm and help our children learn to communicate more respectfully and effectively. In addition, facilitators will answer questions from the webinar audience at the end of the session. Space for the webinar is limited to the first 500 participants. The webinar will be recorded if parents are unable to join the webinar at the designated time. Registrants for this Parent Academy will receive an one day prior to the webinar with the log in information. The worst time for us to discovery Infinite Campus information is incorrect is when an emergency happens. Staff will see all changes immediately in Infinite Campus.
