1 V I L L A N O V A U N I V E R S I T Y The CEER Inquirer Presented by the Engineering Student Council (ESC) Volume 9, Issue 2 October 24, 2014 Engineering Club and Organization Updates Steel Bridge The Steel Bridge Team has been busy recruiting new members! We have held design and AutoCAD meetings and are planning to have more soon. We are holding office hours in SETRL this year to get the new members acquainted with cutting, welding, and everything else. To set up an office hour to learn about how to safely use the tools, contact Matt Arnold at marnold3@villanova.edu. To get on the mailing list for more information about steel bridge team, contact Courtney Brown at cbrown54@villanova.e du. Engineering Student Council (ESC) Engineering Student Council is fully invested this semester, engaged in the annual bonding event barbecue, the annual Pumpkin Drop and encouraging everyone to come out and watch pumpkins get saved and slaughtered in October. Pumpkins will be dropped from ~100 ft, and judged by ESC to either be the best explosion or safest fall. ESC is fully committed to building community within the College of Engineering. WE will be hosting Donuts with the Dean on Wednesday morning, October 29, 9-11 am. The College of Engineering is actively planning more events to engage the entire council and the College of Engineering. ESC is actively engaged in the future, planning events for the entire council and the college in general. National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) "Welcome back from fall break, welcome to new members to the organization, and welcome to returning members to another year of professional development-oriented engineering extracurriculars. Our first general body meeting will on October 24th. We will be discussing how to apply and prepare for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam with a panel of seniors who have already taken the exam. We have a new professional development/ networking event with the Philadelphia Professional Chapter of NSPE that's scheduled for late November, so keep your eyes peeled."

2 Formula SAE This month, Villanova's Formula SAE team was on schedule for a design freeze on October 11th. This means all design work is completed and finalized, and the manufacturing process can begin. The team is very excited to work with a new sponsor, MK Precision, who is generously manufacturing VU07's wheel assembly. MKP's contribution is a great help to the team in terms of cost and advanced machine capabilities. With the help of MKP and the rest of its sponsors, the team is now working towards their next big milestone: rolling chassis. PEERS The CEER PEERS have continued to meet with their freshmen since first meeting them during orientation. We have held a few review sessions for the EGR 1200 tests. In the meantime, we are busy helping out the freshmen engineering class during office hours. As the freshmen start their new mini-projects, we hope to see lots new faces with more questions. Stop by the office during the posted hours and a PEER will be there to help with any questions. Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Need a little bit of extra help with your homework? Stop by the E.E. Reading Room on the fourth floor of Tolentine during the week! HKN tutoring is in full swing and we love to help! Also, registration is coming up- be on the lookout for more information about our HKN registration help sessions, especially if you are a freshman! Tau Beta Pi The Pennsylvania Theta chapter of Tau Beta Pi was proud to send two delegates to the engineering honor society s national convention earlier in October. The convention was a great opportunity for our members to talk to other Tau Bates from across the country. With a renewed energy from the convention, the Villanova chapter is currently reaching out to alumni in the area in an effort to set up a mentoring system between alumni and student members. Tau Beta Pi is looking forward to having a more active role on campus. Page 2 T HE CEE R I NQUIR ER

3 Pi Tau Sigma (Mechanical Engineering Honor Society) Pi Tau Sigma is The National Mechanical Engineering Honor Society. Here at Villanova, our chapter offers tutoring to undergraduate mechanical engineering students, primarily Sophomores and Juniors. If you are seeking additional help with your coursework or have any questions about becoming a member of Pi Tau Sigma please contact Dr. Qianhong Wu at qianhong.wu@villanova.edu or Matthew Fracchia at mfracchi@villanova.edu. Chi Epsilon The Civil Engineering fraternity, Chi Epsilon, has been focusing on providing tutoring help to all levels of civil engineering students at Villanova University. The fraternity is helping fellow students in all civil engineering classes such as Mechanics I, Me- chanics II, and Structural Analysis. As the end of the semester approaches, tutors will be available for study sessions in preparation for finals. Also, in the upcoming weeks, Chi Epsilon will begin the selection process for new members, as well as, start planning its initiation ceremony, which will take place next semester. Any questions regarding tutoring help or Chi Epsilon in general should be directed to contact Courtney Brown at cbrown54@villanova.edu. American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) ASME is excited about our upcoming events. On October 31 st the Pumpkin Chunkin competition will be hosted at Rowan. Not to mention there is a International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition taking place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. One student will be selected to attend the Student Leader Training Conference at this event. Locally we are planning a professor/ student game night, brewery tour, and Helicopter Museum tour. Technical events will include a CNC milling machine training session and a soldering workshop. We hope you can attend! International Society of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) The IEEE will have its annual internship panel coming up within the next couple weeks and will feature senior electrical engineering students who will share their experiences with applying to and working in internships across many industries. The IEEE is also planning their first ever sumo robot competition. Students will build and program sumo robots that will try and push each other out of a ring. Look out for this opportunity in the coming weeks. V OLU ME 9, ISS UE 2 Page 3

4 Society of Women Engineers (SWE) The Society of Women Engineers has had a great first few months! We recently had an event to teach our girls the ins and outs of LinkedIn. Representatives from Villanova's Career Center came and introduced our chapter to this resourceful tool, explaining how to use it more effectively. We are continuing to prepare for our annual networking dinner which is coming up on November 18 th and we held a resume workshop meeting on October 22nd. There were representatives from the career center and also SWE professionals to review resumes and give tips on how to improve them. Also, a number of us will be attending the Johnson and Johnson networking event on November 10th. This will be an exciting evening of networking with Women Leaders and Members of the Johnson & Johnson Talent Acquisition Team to discuss career opportunities, tips, and advice to guide us in our professional journeys. Chem-E Car The Chem-E Car Team is off to a great start this month! At the moment, we are still working individually in three teams: the Driving team, the Stopping team, and the Chassis team. Our Stopping Reaction team is in the process of gathering crucial data for the Iodine clock reaction. This reaction, in addition to a light sensor, will stop the car. The solution goes dark, and thus blocking the light to the light sensor. That will cut the power off for the driving reaction. The Stopping team is gathering data at different concentrations to determine how long the reaction needs to run until the race day. They will use the data that they collect to choose a time on the race day based on the distance needed to travel. The Driving team is also doing well! They have isolated a potential reaction and would like to begin testing this reaction with a electric motor. They also have been able to obtain steady, consistent voltage and current readings from the reaction and it seems like a promising option to use in this year's car. Soon, they hope to hand their designs off to the Chassis team so that they can begin building a more permanent housing for our chemical battery and standard test can begin including the iodine clock reaction so that data can be collected on the entire car itself. Chem-E Car is collecting promising data and making great progress! Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Over fall break, Engineers Without Borders successfully led three service trips to Panama, Ghana, and Nicaragua in partnership with Villanova Engineering Service Learning. In Panama, the team of engineers was able to gather preliminary data on several chapel and bridge sites, and also looked into the design of a new water system to serve the community. The Ghana group helped the local partner to assess numerous pumps and wells, and the Nicaragua group continued their work with Water for Waslala. Applications have been sent out for upcoming Winter and Spring trips (for more information, contact Jordan Ermilio). Finally, our next general body meeting will be at 3 pm on Friday, October 24 in Tolentine 213 immediately following the first-ever VESL seminar. Friday's seminar will feature Dr. Singh presenting on alternative energy sources. We are looking forward to a great second half of the semester! Page 4 T HE CEE R I NQUIR ER
