9 Helpful Information and Services Parking permits Permits are purchased online through your MySlice account and must be picked up at Parking Services, 621 Skytop Road, during these times. No permits will be mailed. Friday, January 9, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, January 10, noon-5 p.m. Sunday, January 11, noon-5 p.m. To register your vehicle, bring your SU I.D. or class schedule. You must have a University parking permit to park in campus lots. I.D. cards Your SU I.D. card will serve as your official University identification and give you access to residence halls, dining centers, snack operations, athletic facilities, library privileges, vending machines, Carrier Dome and Schine Box Office event tickets, laundry services, and the Schine Copy. For information on obtaining an SU I.D., please go to housingmealplans.syr.edu and follow the links to ID Card Services, New student ID. The Housing, Meal Plan, and I.D. Card Service located at 206 Steele Hall will be open: Friday, January 9, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, January 10, noon-4 p.m. Sunday, January 11, noon-4 p.m. Registration information You can register for classes beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 10. The exam will be given Thursday, January 8, from 9 a.m. to noon (please arrive by 8:45 to be seated) in Gifford Auditorium, H.B. Crouse Hall. Bring a photo ID, No. 2 pencil and your SU I.D. or your SCIS clearance form. 10 Helpful Information and Services Foreign Language placement exam If you are a new student who has had any previous instruction in or personal experience with a language and plan to continue studies in that language, you must take the appropriate foreign language placement examination. Please follow the instructions for registering for language classes, which can be found in the registration materials for your school or college. To be properly registered for French, German, Hebrew, Italian, or Spanish, you must take the appropriate placement exam online prior to registering. The placement exams are available at myslice.syr.edu. Placement exams for all other languages will be available by contacting the appropriate language coordinator in 340 H.B. Crouse Hall (HBC) or contact Colleen Kepler at cdkepler@syr.edu. You can find information about all languages offered on the web site at lang.syr.edu, click on Languages and select the appropriate language. Mathematics placement exam The mathematics placement exam is available online at myslice.syr.edu. You can take this exam from any computer and should complete it before you arrive on campus. If you cannot, you can go to any computer cluster on campus and take it there. A list of campus computer labs and their hours is available at its.syr.edu. After completing the exam, you can view your placement results by going to myslice.syr.edu and clicking on the view placement exam results link. Print out the MySlice page with your results and bring it to your advising session. Frequently Asked Questions about Placement Exams can be found at display/place/placement+exams. Students who will require disability-related accommodations on placement exams should contact the Office of Disability Services at in advance. Health Services Health Services will be open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. on Friday, January 9 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, January 10. If you need assistance while Health Services is closed, call Information Technology and Services Information Technology and Services (ITS) provides a wide range of computing services and facilities for students, including high-speed wireless (AirOrangeX) and wired (ResNET) networks for Internet connections in the residence halls and across campus; ; online academic and personal information resources through MySlice; the Blackboard learning management system; web conferencing; and computer labs equipped with specialized academic software technologies. Access to these services is controlled through your NetID and password. If you have not activated your NetID you should do so before you arrive on campus. The process is simple and can be done online at netid.syr.edu. IMPORTANT: Don t share your password with anyone. No one at Syracuse University, including ITS, will ever ask for your password. Do not respond to any requests to reveal your password or other private information, including online and requests. Treat your password like the PIN for your ATM card as your secret. 8 Questions? 11 Helpful Information and Services Complete information about connecting to and using the computing resources at SU is available on the ITS web site at its.syr.edu/newtosu. GET ONLINE All SU residences enjoy 100 percent high-speed wireless and wired network coverage. You will receive information about connecting your devices to the SU network when you check into your residence hall. To connect, you will need your NetID and password, and access to your device s administrator account. PLEASE FOLLOW THESE REQUIREMENTS: Your computer should have valid, up-to-date antivirus software running and a firewall that is turned on, and be configured to update automatically. Bring an Ethernet cable for any network-enabled TVs, streaming media devices (i.e., Roku 3, Apple TV), and similar devices, including wireless game consoles (i.e., Xbox, Playstation), and if you want the option of a wired connection for your computer. Except for your computer, none of these are supported on the wireless network. Also, bring all the power and connection cables you need for your computer peripherals (printer, external hard drive, monitor, etc.) and portable devices. You must disable any peer-to-peer file sharing services (e.g. Tixati, Vuze, utorrent, Ares) and any Internet connection sharing services on your computer before arriving on campus. Personal wireless access points, wireless routers, and Airports are not permitted on campus; personal wired routers are allowed as long as their wireless capabilities are turned off. Most wireless printers will not work on campus WiFi networks, including Syracuse University s, because they were designed for smaller or less secure home networks. We recommend disabling the wireless feature, and using a Bluetooth wireless connection or USB cable instead. Avoid bringing wireless-only devices (such as Chromecast, Roku 1 & 2, portable gaming units) to campus. These can t be configured to work on the wireless network. BE PREPARED JUST IN CASE Please be sure to bring to campus the administrative password for each of your devices and all of the original software especially your original Windows or Macintosh operating system media (e.g., DVDs, CDs, USB drive) and other media that came with your computer, and the original media and applicable license or key codes for your additional software. These will be necessary for you, or any technician, to reload your computer software should you have a hard drive failure or other serious problem that requires a software reinstallation. Be sure to keep your device software in a safe place. Back up your stuff to an external location! If your computer fails and you haven t backed up your work, photos, music or other important files, they may be lost forever. Whether you choose a hardware option such as an external hard drive, or an online cloud service, make sure to protect your data. COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS Computer recommendations from your school or college can be found at its.syr.edu/computers. Check them before making any decisions. If your school or college says you can buy either Apple or Windows, buy the one with which you are most comfortable. Most standard software is available for both platforms, but running a Windows operating system on an Apple computer may add cost (i.e., Boot Camp). If you have a Windows computer, we recommend it have a wireless network adapter (also known as a NIC) that supports c or n at 5 GHz. NICs that support both the A and N specifications will meet this requirement, and will be indicated as: a/b/g/nl; a/b/g/draft-n; or a/g/n. Apple computers already have this built in. CABLE TELEVISION Standard cable TV service is provided in all SU residential facilities. Optional premium services are available at additional cost. You need to bring your own television, a coaxial cable, and an Ethernet cable if your TV is network-enabled (networkenabled TVs cannot be used on the wireless network). For hours of operation, visit its.syr.edu/supportsvc. Orange Alert Orange Alert, SU s crisis notification system, uses text messages, phone, and alerts to provide rapid notification and instructions to members of the University community in the event of a critical incident in progress. This could include an individual who is considered armed and dangerous, 9

12 Helpful Information and Services a widespread hazardous materials incident, an explosion, or any other event in which there is an immediate threat of physical harm or death to campus community members. To register, students should log onto MySlice, click on the Orange Alert link, and follow the instructions on providing contact information. For more information, contact the Department of Public Safety, , publicsafety.syr.edu. Contact information policy Syracuse University students are required to provide to the University accurate and timely information regarding their addresses, telephone numbers, and other contact information. supolicies.syr.edu/studs/stud_contact.htm. Contact information concerning students and their parents, guardians, and/or emergency contacts facilitates effective communication and access to these persons in appropriate circumstances. Such circumstances may include, but are not limited to, the following: health and safety emergencies affecting students or members of their families; notification concerning opportunities or important events about which students may wish to be informed; and general information sharing from schools, colleges, and departments of the University. Contact information will be maintained in accordance with the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). For more information on student rights under FERPA, visit registrar.syr.edu. Students can submit contact information via MySlice. Log in and select an option under Personal Information. Alternatively, students can submit contact information to the Registrar s Office, 106 Steele Hall, in person, by telephone ( ), or by (registrar.syr.edu). Contact information should be updated whenever changes occur. Dining Services Ernie Davis Dining will be open on Friday, January 9, from 4:30-9 p.m. It will open early for breakfast, 8-10 a.m. on Saturday, January 10 and Sunday, January 11. All the other dining centers wil open for the spring semester beginning with continental breakfast at 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, January 10. Schine Dining will be open on Friday, January 9, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday, January 10 and 11, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Goldstein Dining will open Friday, January 9 from 4:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours are 8 a.m.-midnight. Regular hours will resume on Monday, January 12. The Food Services schedule and hours of operation can be found at foodservices.syr.edu. An SU I.D. card is required for access to any of the dining centers. It is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct to use another student s SU I.D. for access to the dining centers and/or meals. The deadline to lower spring semester meal plans is Friday, January 23 at 5 p.m. All Main Campus residents and first-year students living in the Skyhalls at South Campus are required to enroll in a University meal plan as outlined in the Terms and Conditions of Student Housing. You may purchase or change a meal plan online. Use your NetID to log on to Myslice.syr.edu and select Dining Plans & Points. SUpercard FOOD SUpercard FOOD is a declining balance cash account that can be used for the a la carte purchase of food and beverages in all Food Services locations and University vending machines. The account is accessed through your SU I.D. card. It s a fast and convenient way to eat on campus. All University meal plans come with a FOOD account. You may purchase FOOD funds online 24/7 throughout the academic year. Use your NetID to log on to Myslice.syr.edu and select Purchase FOOD/PLUS. Be sure to specify FOOD when processing your request. Unused balances on your FOOD account carry over from fall to spring semester. There are no transfers or carryovers of unused balances in FOOD accounts after June 30. Food and beverage sales are exempt from New York sales tax. PLUS account The PLUS declining balance cash account provides access to goods and services (other than food) through your University I.D. card. The PLUS account can be used in campus washers and dryers, to buy tickets at the Schine Box Office, Carrier Dome Box Office, the Schine Copy, and for textbooks and products in the SU Bookstore including textbook rental (with bank card for deposit). A minimum purchase of $25 is required to open a PLUS account. While account balances carry over from fall to spring to summer sessions, unused balances at the end of summer sessions are not carried over. University Bookstore After you register for classes, shop for your textbooks online through the SU Bookstore web site at bookweb.syr.edu, or bring your course schedule to the textbook department located on the lower level of the Bookstore in the Schine Student. The Architecture Supplies Store is located in Slocum Hall. Syracuse apparel and gifts It s easy to show your Orange spirit with Syracuse University emblematic merchandise, including traditional T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats. Technology Shop the Bookstore s variety of computers and software, featuring Apple products. The Bookstore also offers educationally priced software, printers, ink cartridges, flash drives, ipads, ipods, and more. The SU Bookstore is the site of CuseTech, where certified Apple technicians are on site for convenient warranty and out of warranty repairs. Textbook buy-back The Bookstore offers a year-round buy-back service. In addition, during a special event at the end of each semester, up to 50 percent of the original price may be recouped after instructors place textbook orders with the Bookstore. Frequent shopper discounts Art department: Make six purchases of $30 or more and receive a $20 coupon toward your next purchase of $30 or more of art and architecture supplies. Book-lover s card: Buy nine general books at regular price and receive the average cost off your 10th general book purchase. Select from a broad selection of vegan, ethnic, and low-fat foods. Health and beauty care, laundry and cleaning products, paper goods, and storage products are available too. Bookstore Charge account Matriculated Syracuse University students may open a Bookstore Charge account. There is no fee for this service, and no interest is charged when the monthly balance is paid in full. For those who prefer to extend payments over time, an interest charge is applied. For those under 21 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign and date the agreement as well.
