4 CHAPLAIN S CORNER Whether they re furry, feathered or finned, our pets brighten our lives and other lives as well. Take Badger, Charlie and Eugene, who visit BSP every week and always leave happy faces in their wake thanks, Pets for Life! Ditto for the pets who visit us courtesy of staff or family members, such as Libby, Jolly, Elmo and Simon. They bless us just by being there! So it seems only right that we at BSP should offer our pets a blessing in our turn, and that brings us to the Blessing of the Animals. This fall we will gather for that purpose in the Bishop s Garden at 1:00 on Sunday, October 11. Residents, family members and staff are welcome to bring their animal companions for this event (humans, please be prepared should your pet respond to a call of nature during this time). CHAPLAIN ANNOUNCEMENTS Chaplain Kathy Hall Roman Catholic Mass: Father Bob Hagan, from Guardian Angels Parish, will be here to celebrate Mass for our Roman Catholic residents on Wednesday, October 7, at 9:30 a.m. in The Chapel of the Epiphany. Good Books: We will meet on the 4 th Monday of the month, October 26, at 3:00 p.m. in The Chapel of the Epiphany. We will be discussing The Good Book by Peter Gomes. Happy reading! Blessing of the Animals: The blessing is a yearly tradition in many churches, usually coinciding with the feast of Saint Francis. Please join us in the Bishop s Garden on Sunday, October 11, at 1:00 p.m. KC CENTRAL LIBRARY PRESENTS THE FRONTIER IN EISENHOWER HISTORY 2015 commemorates not only the 125th anniversary of the birth of Dwight D. Eisenhower, but also the U.S. Census Bureau s declaration that the American frontier had closed. As historian Tim Rives explains, these two events are not unrelated. Like other progressives of his generation, Eisenhower saw this as the end of the first phase of American history, and the beginning of a new age in which the federal government would replace the lost reservoir of free land and abundant resources with economic cooperation and individual security through social programs. Tim Rives is the deputy director and supervisory archivist of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum and Boyhood Home in Abilene, Kansas, and will be the speaker at the Kansas City Central Library. The BSP bus departs at 5:45 on Tuesday, October 13. Remember to sign up with the Madison or Jefferson concierge. SILPADA JEWELRY SALE COMING TO BSP Enjoy a jewelry shopping spree without leaving the comfort of BSP! Silpada s sterling silver jewelry is handcrafted with only the finest materials. 8 WORNALL AND MAJOR HOUSE MUSEUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL WORK The unknown is the lure for local historian, Doug Shaver, and why he was hired by the Wornall House Museum. The timing was right: Foundation repairs were being made, so he and other professionals and volunteers got their hands dirty mining items from bullets to toys. Shaver s archaeological work on these historic properties helps us understand how these found artifacts and landscapes contributed to the development of our city. Join us for this special presentation at 3:00 on Friday, October 16, in the Westport Room to learn about the importance of this work. You ll dig it! SENIORS TO STATE PARKS TAKES US TO WESTON BEND STATE PARK As part of the Seniors to State Parks program, we will join the Missouri State Park staff for a trip to Weston Bend State Park. Minutes from the hustle and bustle of Kansas City, the park offers sweeping views of the Missouri River from trails and a scenic overlook. A three-mile paved loop trail takes hikers and bikers through the park s woody terrain. Weston, the town the park is named after, is an old port town rich in Missouri history. The surrounding area was a thriving tobacco and trade community. Box lunches will be available, so please let Jo know of any food allergies. Lunch will be followed with a program on Lewis and Clark, along with a performance of folk songs by park staff! This fall celebration lasts from 9:00 to 2:00 on Tuesday, October 6. Remember to dress appropriately for activities and weather. This outing is limited to 14 residents so please sign up soon with the Madison or Jefferson concierge. The BSP bus departs promptly at 9:00! 10 GARDEN TIME Brilliant yellow butterflies were seen recently darting around the Jefferson Circle flowers, enhancing their colors. The Garden Committee has worked at planting to attract butterflies for several years; this year milkweed plants near the bird bath in the Memorial Garden grew, bloomed and displayed seed pods. Scarlet bee balm bloomed also, adding to the already-established echinacea (coneflower). Now there is evidence of something (finches?) eating from their seed pods. Rumor has it that Bill Buckner transferred caterpillars from the herb garden parsley to his garden plot parsley. We hope we ll see more butterflies in the future.
