1 CHILDREN OF THE CONFEDERACY 61st ANNUAL GENERAL CONVENTION Welcome to Appomattox, Virginia Appomattox: The Final Chapter, 1861 ~ 1865 On Palm Sunday (April 9), 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General U.S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia The Holiday Inn Downtown Lynchburg will serve as home base for this year s CofC General Convention. Located at 601 Main Street in the historic district of Lynchburg and offering beautiful views not only of the city but also of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is the largest hotel in the historic area. Restaurants, shopping, and entertainment are all within walking distance. History lovers can visit nearby Poplar Forest (the first home of Thomas Jefferson) and the Bedford D-Day Memorial, while nature lovers may want to see the Natural Bridge or take advantage of the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, the country's only year-round ski resort. Thursday, July 16 The morning begins with an instructional meeting for convention pages at 10:30 a.m. in the Grand Ballroom. The Directors Luncheon follows at 11:00 a.m. in the Executive Dining Room. The Memorial Service will be held at the Court Street United Methodist Church, located at 621 Court Street, one block from the hotel. Our guest speaker for Welcome and Historical Evening will be author and Pamplin Park Executive Director A. Wilson Greene. Afterwards, stick around for fun and games Virginia Style while the Nominating Committee interviews candidates for General Office. Friday, July 17 We will tour the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and visit the parlor where General Lee met General Grant to discuss the terms that brought the war to an end. A highlight of the tour will be Lula McLean s rag doll (better known as The Silent Witness ), which traveled from the McLean s parlor to New York and then back again to the parlor 127 years later. We will also visit the Appomattox location of the Museum of the Confederacy, which opened in March 2012 and show cases artifacts, photographs, and documents from the Museum s unparalleled collection. Virginia Division CofC has worked actively with the Museum for a number of years to conserve artifacts housed in its Richmond location, including two flags made by children, a pair of children s shoes, three uniforms belonging to the Davis children, a cradle built by soldiers, and a child s apron. Some of these items will be on display in Appomattox. The Spring House Dining & Reception Hall will provide a Virginia-style BBQ buffet dinner for us before we head back to the hotel for a party in the rooftop swimming pool. Saturday, July 18 Saturday afternoon will feature both the Education/Patriotic Luncheon and the CofC Alumni luncheon meeting (the latter at Market at Main, located within walking distance of the hotel). Presidents Evening, the Banquet, and the Confederate Ball will close the 61 st Annual General CofC Convention. Come and enjoy all that Virginia s Hill City has to offer!
