Please see the Global Student Orientation Schedule for specific details of all Global Orientation events. FRIDAY, AUGUST 23 Move- In Day *Meal plans begin today New Student Residence Hall Check- In, Residence Halls 8:00 am - 7:00 pm The University formally opens its doors to all FIRST TIME students. This time is set aside exclusively for new students to move into their residence hall rooms. Proceed directly to your assigned residence hall where our staff of Residence Life is ready to assist you in moving into your new home. Use this time wisely since you have a full and exciting week ahead. We'll see you in the morning at the Orientation Kickoff! Please check back of schedule to see alternate Residence Hall check- in times if you will not be checking in on Friday. New Student ID, Student Services Building 8:00 am 7:00 pm Be sure to stop by during Opening Weekend to get your new student ID card. SOS Info Booth, Fluor Fountain 8:00 am - 6:00 pm If you have any questions about orientation week, would like to sign up and pay for events, or get general campus information, please take a moment to stop by the SOS Info Booth. Bank and Local Business Fair, SUB/Café Roadway 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Local banks are here to facilitate new checking and savings accounts and to speak with you about your other financial concerns. In addition, you can visit local community tables to get information about transportation, hotels and more. Don t miss this opportunity! Biola English Placement Exam (BEPE), Business 102/103 8:00 am - 12:00 pm All students whose native language is not English are required to take the BEPE unless they have scored 100 IBT/250 CBT/600 PBT or above on the TOEFL, or have scored above 480 on the verbal portion of the SAT. Students are directed to take the BEPE by their admissions advisor. A cash fee of $25.00 and a photo ID are required and must be presented at the beginning of the exam. The fee is applied toward tuition upon enrollment. Results of the test will be given on Monday, August 26 at 9:00 am at the mandatory ELSP Orientation. 1

2 Global Student and Parent Welcome Luncheon, Talbot East Andrews Banquet Room 12:00 pm 1:30 pm Missionary, expatriate, and international families are invited to join the Office of International Student Services for a welcome luncheon. We hope this event - featuring President Barry Corey, faculty, staff, and global students - will be a great time of fellowship, interaction, and welcome! Chemistry Placement Exam, Bardwell 112 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm If you already took this exam and passed it over the summer or at the Biola June Academic Advising event, you are not required to retake this exam. In order to enroll in CHEM 105 General Chemistry I or CHEM 112 Principles of Organic and Biochemistry, you must take a chemistry placement exam. The exam determines whether you have the skills necessary for success in these courses. If you do not pass, you are required to take CHEM 104. CHEM 104 is offered both Fall and Spring semesters. You must receive a B- or better in CHEM 104 to proceed to CHEM 112 or CHEM 105. CHEM 105 is only offered in the fall semester, so that General Chemistry II, CHEM 106, can be offered sequentially in the spring. CHEM 112 is offered both spring and fall semesters. Please plan accordingly once you have your placement exam results. Majors requiring chemistry include: PHSC, PHEP, BCHM, BIOS, BIHB, BIES, KEHP, KPTH, and NURS. A study guide for this exam can be found at the Academic Advising website. Physics Placement Exam, Bardwell 112 2:30 pm 4:00 pm If you already took this exam and passed it over the summer or at the Biola June Academic Advising event, you are not required to retake this exam. In order to enroll in PHSC 111 Physics I or PHSC 132 General Physics I, you need to take the Physics Placement Exam. This test determines whether you have the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for success in PHSC 111 or PHSC 132. If you do not pass, you need to plan to take PHSC 092 Introduction to Physics, which is only offered in the spring. Upon completing with a satisfactory grade, you will be able to take PHSC 111 or PHSC 132 the following fall. PHSC 111 and PHSC 132 are only offered in the fall so that their sequential classes may be offered in the spring semesters. By taking PHSC 092 in the spring you will be prepared for your required physics class the following fall semester. Majors requiring PHSC 111 or PHSC 132 include PHSC, PHEP, BCHM, BIOS, BIES, BIHB, KEHP, and KPTH. A study guide for this exam can be found at the Academic Advising website. Mandatory Math Exam for Business Majors, Business 109 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm Business students are required to take this mathematics placement exam. A study guide for this exam can be found at the Academic Advising Website. Mandatory Placement Exam for Music Majors, Crowell Hall Room 122 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm All Music Majors are required to take a Written Theory, Sight- singing and Dictation exam at this time. A study guide for this exam can be found at the Academic Advising website. The Director of the Conservatory will be giving a brief overview of the Conservatory of Music prior to the exams. Mandatory Keyboard Placement Exam, Crowell Hall Room 105 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm All non- keyboard Music Majors (including Composition and Worship majors with piano emphasis) are required to take this exam. Each student will sign up for one test period (of approximately five minutes) during this time. The sign up sheet will be available during the Theory Placement Exam. MKs/TCKs What s on the DL, Café Banquet Room 3:30 pm 5:00 pm (mandatory for new MK/TCK) If you are a missionary kid (MK) or a third- culture kid (TCK), being back in the U.S. may have some challenges. This is your first opportunity to experience a Biola University tradition... and one that is sure to inform as well as entertain. The Student Orientation Services Staff will begin your Biola experience with a highly charged presentation that will give you a glimpse into your new community. Following this presentation, students will meet in their SOS groups and attend lunch in the cafeteria together. Campus Worship, Chase Gymnasium 10:30 am - 11:45 am Chapel Programs invites you to join in a time of community worship and fellowship. One of Biola s esteemed professors has been invited to speak. SOS Hangout Afternoon, Check with SOS Leader 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm Be sure to join your SOS group for a relaxing afternoon to hang out and meet the people in your SOS group and other SOS groups. Your SOS Group will be going out into the local community for fun and games. Transfer Students: you will be heading out with fellow transfer students and transfer leaders for a fun afternoon. Come and worship the Lord led by fellow Biola students. MONDAY, AUGUST 26 Pack- Out Breakfast and Devotions, Your SOS Group Meeting Location 7:30 am - 8:30 am Rise and Shine! Make the most of this opportunity to connect with those in your SOS group and hear personally from your SOS Leader. Check with your SOS Leader for the exact meeting spot. Academic Orientation, Tent on McNally Field 8:30 am - 10:00 am (Mandatory for all new students) Your university administrators will provide valuable information to help you navigate through your academic journey at Biola University. Be sure to bring your ID card to check in at this event. Please plan to arrive early to avoid long check- in lines! My Academic Advisor is ELSP Orientation, Library PC Lab (meet in front of the library) 9:00 am - 12:00 pm This session is mandatory for all students who have taken the BEPE because the results of the BEPE will only be given at this time. The ELSP Admissions Advisor and Academic Coordinator will be providing crucial orientation information. Students may also meet with an academic advisor. Transfer Information Session, Tent on McNally Field 10:00 am - 10:45 am (Mandatory for all transfer students) Your university administrators will provide you with important transfer- specific information to help you navigate the transfer process and make the most of your transferred courses. Transcript Evaluations will be sent to you electronically prior to the event. Last Day for Late Enrollment for All New Students Last day to enroll without a $200 late fee: August 15, 4:00 pm Last day to enroll before classes drop: August 26, 4:00 pm Final day of late enrollment: September 6, 4:00 pm If you have not finished Enrollment (Phase 2), you will need to log on to my.biola.edu to complete the process. Remember, your Fall Enrollment is not finalized until all administrative steps of Enrollment (Phase 2) and your down payment have been completed. If you would like assistance with Enrollment (Phase 2), please visit the Office of the Registrar in Middle Metzger or call the Registration helpline (562) Your enrollment status on my.biola must say Enrolled by Monday, August 26. All your classes will be dropped on Tuesday, August 27 if your status is Not Enrolled. 5

6 Academic Advising & Major Open House 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Locations for Course Scheduling will be announced at the Academic Orientation Session (8:30 am). If you do not already have your fall classes or if you still have questions, this is the time to meet with your Academic Department. Music majors must meet with their advisors whether or not they have completed enrollment. You are welcome to stop by your academic department today even if you do not need assistance with your course schedule to learn about your major's First Year Seminar, your assigned academic advisor, and more. Refreshments will be served at this time. Mandatory Academic Advising for all Incoming Music Majors, Crowell Hall Room :00 am 12:00 pm Transfer students may attend immediately following the Transfer Information Session. All incoming Music Majors must attend the Academic Advising session for music course assignments and course registration assistance. Non- Traditional Commuter Student Reception, Upper Student Union - The Collegium 11:00 am 12:00 pm Feel like you don t fit the typical new freshman profile? A little further down the road of life? Introduction to Student IT Services, Sutherland Auditorium 1:00 pm - 1:45 pm (Mandatory for all new students) Join representatives from Information Technology (IT) as they explain how you can make the most of the technology services and support options that Biola provides. The session will cover everything from the wireless networks to using Blackboard, from the IT Helpdesk to the Biola Computer Store. Southern California Beach Party, SOS Group Locations 2:30 pm 9:30 pm $$ Come experience one of Southern California s best natural attractions. Take a break and beat the heat at our SOS annual Beach Party. Come have some fun in the sand and sun with incoming students and SOS leaders. Play games, swim, meet people, have dinner, and bring this evening to a close around a bonfire led in worship by our Chapel Programs worship teams. Prior registration and payment required at Bus transportation and a brown bag dinner are included with your ticket purchase. TUESDAY, AUGUST 27 Spiritual Development Seminar, Tent on McNally Field 8:30 am - 9:20 am (Mandatory for all students) The University s Dean of Spiritual Development, Dr. Todd Pickett, will present some of the opportunities for spiritual development during these next few years and discuss the role that the various chapel and Christian Formation & Ministry programs can play in your relationship with God. He will explain some of the traditional events in the Biola Community including chapels, the Torrey Bible Conference and the Missions Conference. Because chapel itself is a central aspect of your spiritual development here at Biola, the discipline and rhythm of regular chapel attendance is required of all undergraduate students. The Biola Community, Tent on McNally Field 9:30 am - 10:20 am (Mandatory for all new students) What are the building blocks of the Biola Community experience? What purposes do the Community Standards fulfill in our living and learning together? What is my role and responsibility to Diversity within the Biola Community? In this session, we will seek to answer these questions and unpack the critical role that personal responsibility will play in your Biola experience. 6

7 Campus Safety & Health Services Seminar, Tent on McNally Field 10:30 am - 11:20 am (Mandatory for all new students) John Ojeisekhoba, the Chief of Campus Safety, will give some important and critical insights on how to ensure your safety while here at Biola and steps to take during certain kinds of major emergencies. Then, meet the Health Center staff and learn about services provided and hours of operation so you can take advantage of this professional medical staff that understands your health needs. The Biola Counseling Center will also provide important information about the resources and assistance that are available to you. Commuter Seminar, Upper Student Union The Collegium 11:30 am - 12:20 pm Did you know that over 1,600 undergrad Biolans commute? Come hear how you too can get quickly connected and involved on- campus, all while enjoying lunch with members of this awesome community! Free Lunch provided by Commuter Life! Mu Kappa Orientation, Upper Student Union - The Collegium 8:00 pm 9:30 pm Mu Kappa is a club for Missionary Kids, those students who have grown up on the mission field all around the world. This club provides a place to connect with other MKs and allow the students to be themselves as well as help each other adjust to life in the United States. A dessert orientation will be held for all new and returning MK students in the Collegium. SMU Worship Night, Calvary Chapel 9:30 pm 10:30 pm We will gather together to worship and celebrate the God of the nations and will pray for the unreached and for one another. This is a great opportunity for new students to come and fellowship with those involved in SMU (Student Missionary Union). FRIDAY, AUGUST 30 Commuter Collegium Open House, Upper Student Union The Collegium 8:30 am 4:30 pm (No membership needed through Friday, August 30) Commuter Students! The Collegium has extended hours today so that you can hang out in the Collegium and then walk over to the AS Splash Event at 4:30 pm! You ll be joining new and returning students at this Associated Student- sponsored BIOLA TRADITION. It s a great way to kick off your first weekend at Biola after classes have started. Your ticket includes dinner from Chipotle, entrance into the Splash water park, and a night of fun entertainment with your fellow Biolans. 10 SOS Community Service Day, Meet at Sutherland Auditorium 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Come and end this week by serving together. We will be assisting local churches and the community through yard work, painting, cleaning, and more! Join us for fun and fellowship as we serve the local community together. Soul Group Info Night, Sutherland Auditorium 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm Would you like to be part of a small group in a comfortable setting? Come and hear how you can be a part of this great opportunity. You ll hear from students who have participated in Soul Groups this past year as well as SOS Leaders that will be leading Soul Groups this fall semester. Bring a friend!
