8 Letter From, The President of Missouri State University There are two annual events for the fraternities and sororities that are among my favorites: Greek Week and Greek Jam. Both events build teamwork and create a positive atmosphere on campus. Greek Week is a time for Missouri State s fraternities and sororities to join together to celebrate sisterhood and brotherhood. Teams of fraternities and sororities compete in a series of events, from philanthropy night and service events to banners and relays. A VIP reception also honors scholastic achievement and excellence within the fraternity and sorority community. Greek Week symbolizes what fraternity and sorority life is all about. Greek Jam features students in fraternity-sorority combinations performing choreographed routines that they develop and practice for several weeks. My wife, Gail, and I have attended Greek Jam and I can tell you that the groups are highly entertaining and the performances are viewed by thousands in person and online. But there is more to Greek life than the fun and events. Besides having a great time, these students make a difference in our community. The fraternities and sororities raise funds for worthwhile organizations such as the Children s Miracle Network and collect several thousand pounds of food for organizations like the Ozarks Food Harvest. Sorority and fraternity members also volunteer in the community, such as cleaning Jordan Creek. Consider becoming a member of a fraternity or sorority. It s another way to Make Your Missouri Statement, I still treasure and benefit from my fraternity experience when I was in college. Thank you for your consideration. Clifton M. 9 Letter From, The Vice President of Student Affairs While involvement in the Fraternity and Sorority Life community may not be the right experience for all students, it does provide a positive connection for many. Thousands of our alumni have enriched and enhanced their Missouri State University experience through involvement in our Greek-lettered organizations. Our fraternities and sororities offer students the opportunity to make friends, to serve others, and to gain leadership experience, both on campus and on a national level. We are proud of the accomplishments of our growing number of Greek-lettered organizations and students. You owe it to yourself to learn about these organizations and to consider whether membership would be the right choice for you! During my collegiate days at MSU (many years ago), I joined a National Sorority. That affiliation provided me an abundance of growth and development opportunities. 10 Letter From, The Dean of Students The decision to join a fraternity or sorority should be a carefully considered and informed choice. What are the fraternity or sorority s core values, not only as they are stated but as you see them lived by members and are those values shared by you? How will the organization contribute to your academic success and help you develop organizational and leadership skills? What organization will offer you the opportunity to be a part of activities that provide life meaning? Fraternity or sorority membership is a lifetime commitment to certain values. Our fraternities and sororities exist and thrive at Missouri State to the degree they contribute through their service to our campus and to the larger community. This service is frequently represented in the important leadership roles that fraternity men and women hold in student organizations, their philanthropic work on the national and local level and in the vitality they bring to student events. Our students gain skills through their fraternity or sorority experience that serve them well beyond their college years, helping them to successfully navigate the work force upon graduation. I strongly encourage you to participate in the recruitment activities that are available and to determine if a fraternity or sorority is the right choice for your collegiate experience. Joining my sorority was one of the most meaningful decisions that I have made, and I know that you will find the same value in your fraternity or sorority experience. A fraternity or sorority can provide an abundance of opportunities to a student at Missouri State. Fraternity and sorority students at Missouri State are leaders on campus, they commit themselves to academic excellence, they serve the Springfield community, and they build lifelong bonds with their brothers and sisters. 15 Letter From, Interfraternity Council VP of Recruitment Congratulations on making the decision to attend Missouri State University this academic year. This university has given me more opportunities than I could have ever dreamed, and I know that I ll always consider myself a Bear long after graduation, no matter where I end up. That sense of pride, accomplishment, and preparedness for the outside world has, for the large part, been drawn from my time in the Missouri State fraternity community. As your time on our campus approaches, I d encourage you all to prepare for the recruitment process, whether it be info night, Bear Bash, or individual chapter events. Keep an open mind, observe those around you, and most importantly have fun! These organizations are here on campus to enrich the community - including your experience as a Missouri State Student. Coming into college, I had never given any serious thought to joining a fraternity - I was disillusioned by the stereotypes seen so often in the media, and came to the university expecting to find my involvement elsewhere. What I found instead was one of the greatest communities I ve ever had the privilege of being a part of in my life - a vast network of connections built on brotherhood, academics, service, and values. 24 Letter From, NPHC Council President Walter Mingole Kayesse NPHC President The National Pan-Hellenic Council at Missouri State University has an ongoing mission of improving the level of diversity and diverse inclusion here at Missouri State and Springfield as a whole. All of the organizations seek to empower and uplift the students on campus as well as improve the social, Greek and racial unity at Missouri State. Being paragons of stewardship, humility and academic tenacity, our endeavors live on through you freshmen. I look forward to growth in my council and all my chapters! Go Bears! History of NPHC The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is comprised of nine international fraternities and sororities including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Currently, Missouri State University hosts six of the nine NPHC organizations. NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings, and other mediums and engages in programming and initiatives through various activities. Who can go through the Intake Process? Each organization has specific requirements on the national and local levels. Minimum GPA requirements range from Aspirants must have at least 12 credit hours and 24 hours in some organizations. Other qualifications needed may include (but not limited to) community service hours, campus involvement, character, etc. For specific qualifications, one should contact the local chapter of the organization they wish to join. Joining an NPHC organization is a life-time commitment. It is strongly suggested that anyone who is interested do their research on the organization they aspire to join. 24

30 Letter From, President of Panellenic Association On behalf of the Missouri State Panhellenic Association, I would like to welcome you to Missouri State University. Thank you for considering joining our Fraternity and Sorority Life community. Becoming a sorority woman at Missouri State can provide support and friendships that will last a lifetime. Missouri State is home to nine chapters. Each of our nine chapters has their own unique individual characteristics. Coming to college can be a scary experience, and I hope that you find a chapter that becomes your home away from home. Sorority recruitment is all about finding the best fit for you- make sure you re looking for sisters and values that support you and your goals. Having the ability to experience each chapter s sisterhood, philanthropy, and values gives you the opportunity to find the chapter that makes you feel at home. Being a part of a sorority is one of the best experiences that a student can have, and Missouri State s recruitment is all about finding the place you feel welcomed and loved. I encourage you to keep an open mind throughout the process- each sorority has so much to offer, and there is no bad choice. College is a key time in your life when you can understand who you are and discover what you want to be, and each of our sororities can help you to do so. You will find women who share and express your same interests and goals, as well as a support system that cares about your growth. When coming to campus in the Fall, and when going through recruitment, I encourage you to focus on what is important to you and what you truly seek out of your university experience. In doing so, I m confident you will find the sorority that is right for you and, ultimately, a new place to call home. I have learned many things in the past three years, but one of the most important things that I have learned is how to be a Bear. Fraternity and Sorority Life at Missouri State University provides so many incredible opportunities to become a Bear. The time I have spent involved in Missouri State University s sorority life has shaped me into the woman that I have become. I have recognized the importance of giving back to the community that has given me so much. I have found my leadership voice and style. I have spent time with people who are different than I am in many ways, but at the end of the day we acknowledge our similarities and celebrate our differences. I have learned so many life lessons in the company of women who I may not have had the opportunity to engage with if I had not joined the Fraternity and Sorority Life Community. 40 Financial FAQ Does every chapter have a house? Seven sororities and 12 fraternities have chapter houses. Does every chapter require members to live in the chapter house? Many of the chapters do recommend that members live in the chapter house for at least one year, but each chapter has their own specific requirements regarding housing and this could be address during recruitment. Are there scholarships to pay for sorority and fraternity fees? Scholarships are avalaible through many of the chapter headquarters as well as Missouri State s campus to help pay for chapter dues. You can ask each chapter for more information. Most of the chapters also have payment plans available to help manage payment of dues. What do dues cover? Dues go towards many things including national chapter headquarters, Greek Week, Homecoming events, philanthropy activities, and an assortment of other costs. The following is what a potential new member going through fall 2017 recruitment can expect to pay during the academic school year. 40

44 Things to Know About Fraternity & Sorority Life Organizations F. S. L. S. A. Fraternity and Sorority Leaders for Social Awareness or FSLSA is an organization of fraternity and sorority members that sponsors educational programs to raise awareness of social issues on Missouri State s campus. FSLSA not only educates the community on making wise choices regarding alcohol, but has also begun to dive into other issues regarding drug abuse, sexual assault, and a variety of other important social issues. Order of Omega Order of Omega consists of only the top 3% of fraternity and sorority members, based on GPA, leadership, inter-fraternal relations, and community service. Meetings facilitate discussion about aspects of the community that need to change, such as: finances, recruitment, negative image, underage drinking, or hazing. 44 Phi Sigma Upsilon Phi Sigma Upsilon is a leadership and training organization for freshman and sophomore students who are driven to become leaders in Fraternity and Sorority Life. The organization allows its members the opportunity to plan group events and gain the time management required of holding an executive office. Phi Sigma Upsilon is an excellent way to build confidence for future leadership roles. Rho Lambda The Greek letters Rho Lambda stand for Panhellenic Leadership. The purpose of Rho Lambda is to honor those women within the Missouri State FSL community who have exhibited the highest qualities of leadership and service to Panhellenic and their sorority. The organization is made up of junior and senior women who hold a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The members help support the Girl Scouts of America. It also serves as an excellent way to meet inspiring women from the community.
