Fraternity The Key to Brotherhood Fraternities offer social opportunities, campus activities, recognition, leadership skills, and most importantly offer brotherhood. Brotherhood is an intangible feeling which is difficult to describe because it means something different to each man. When you are a member of a fraternity you participate, contribute, work and lead. You ll learn and practice the skills you need to be successful after college. When you become a member, you will find support, encouragement and motivation and will grow as an individual.

This is not only a great accomplishment, but also a great opportunity. During your time here at Missouri S&T there will be numerous chances to get involved in activities outside the classroom. I took the opportunity to join a fraternity my freshman year and since then I have made great friends, held several leadership positions on campus, and continue to succeed academically. Greek Life has made my experience here memorable and will continue to benefit me long after I leave Missouri S&T. So ask yourself: Do you want to get as much out of college as possible? Do you want life-long friendships? Do you want to be a leader? If you answered yes to these questions, Greek Life might be for you. I recommend that you take the time to visit as many fraternities as possible and learn what each organization has to offer. Tour the houses that interest you and get to know the individual members; they might become your brothers someday. The more informed decision you make, the more rewarding your college experience will be. I encourage you to look into Greek Life and see all the benefits it can provide for you, from scholarship to leadership and service to brotherhood. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tiffany Kroeze (Missouri S&T Greek Advisor, kroezet@mst.edu), any member of the Interfraternity Council or myself. Finally I wish you the best of luck at Missouri S&T and hope to see you on campus as a member of the Greek Community! Fraternally, Josh Parks Interfraternity Council President jap2n8@mst.edu 1

social The Greek system provides its members with many social events. Each year Fraternities participate in Greek Week, Greek Sing, St. Pat s and Homecoming. On regular weekends, fraternities often host social events that are open to all members of the Greek community. This is the opportunity to expand friendships between other houses. At Missouri S&T, fraternities strive to provide a well-rounded education which includes active social interaction. responsibility risk management Each Chapter follows a social policy developed by its inter/national organization in addition to the policy developed by the Panhellenic Association and Interfraternity Council. The Interfraternity Council is committed to helping the fraternities maintain a safe and responsible social environment. anti-hazing Hazing is outlawed by the Missouri University of Science and Technology and the Interfraternity Council. All members of the campus community share the responsibility to challange and make known to the University and the Interfraternity Council any acts that appear to be hazing. 3

Leadership Greeks are well represented in numerous campus organizations including honorary, professional, social and service societies. Greek students make up less than 30% of the campus population but hold more than 40% of the leadership positions within the 200 student organizations. At Missouri S&T, fraternities realize that education is extremely important and encourage members to strive for academic excellence. Fraternities can ease the shock of transitioning from high school to college by providing quiet hours for all members and "help sessions" for freshmen. Many chapters scholarship chairmen are elected to review members grades to insure they are meeting the academic standards. Academics Philanthropy The Greek community believes the commitment to the community is important and that service brings out the best in everyone. At Missouri S&T, Greek organizations have made significant donations of time and money to Prevent Child Abuse America Children s Hospital, Girl Scouts, Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, MDA, United Way, Red Cross, Russell House Battered Women s Shelter, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. The Greek community donated 3,871 hours of community service and over $16,000. 4

bids As you are looking at Fraternities, you will most likely receive a bid card. A bid card is often confusing. To help clarify what a bid card is, here are a few guidelines to remember. Please read both the guidelines and the bid cards you receive carefully. 1. A bid card does not obligate you to join a chapter, and does not make you a member of that Fraternity. It simply reserves you a place in their chapter should you decide to join. 2. We recommend that you only sign a bid card for the chapter in which you are seriously considering membership. This will save room in that chapter for someone who definitely wishes to join that Fraternity. 3. What makes that membership final is signing a bid card and mailing it in or returning to Student Life (218 Havener Center) or Residential LIife (205 West 12th St.) Rolla Mo Housing cards can only be given by the Greek Life Office after it has received a signed bid card. timeline Missouri S&T Fraternities & Sororities have been a part of campus life for over 100 years. Fraternities & Sororities (also known as Greeks ) provide an exciting and unique experience for students. Opportunities for leadership, scholarship, social growth, friendship, and service are just some of the benefits of joining a Fraternity or Sorority. Please call (573) or visit campus.mst.edu/studentlife/greek/. Although you can join at any time, below is a timeline of special events in Greek Life. Get Involved! January April High school students will have the opportunity to request information from our Fraternities and Sororities. Men will also have the opportunity to be contacted by representatives of our Fraternities to learn more about our groups. Many students will be attending PRO during these months, and this gives students the perfect opportunity to check out Greek Life! May August Women can register for formal recruitment, which takes place during Opening Week, online at Women can, at any time, mail registration forms back to Missouri S&T for formal recruitment. Formal recruitment offers women the opportunity to decide which Sorority is for them. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, and gives women the chance to meet and talk to members from each house. Men typically engage in all types of recruitment events during the summer. Cookouts, float trips, socials, and baseball games all give incoming students the opportunity to meet Fraternity members from a variety of different groups. Incoming students or current students can receive an invitation to join a Fraternity (often known as a bid ) at any time during these summer months. In fact, after joining, many of our freshman students choose to move directly into the fraternity house when they arrive on campus. Both Fraternities & Sororities are campus-approved housing, which enables freshmen to live in these houses to fulfill their housing requirements. September December Although the summer has passed, exciting events on campus have just begun! Students are still able to join Fraternities & Sororities throughout these months, and some of our students move out of the residence halls and into Greek housing during this time. The process is simple and easy. Contact The Office of Residential Life for more details. In September, the campus celebrates Greek Week, a week of programming, games, and fun events dedicated to Fraternities & Sororities at Missouri S&T. Homecoming is also a time for Greek students to participate in campus-wide events as Greek alumni return to campus and their Fraternities & Sororities. 17

recruitment 101 the recruitment chairman s role A Recruitment Chairman is appointed or elected by each chapter to coordinate new member recruitment and membership selection. Recruitment Chairmen also arrange informal visits, open recruitment activities, and interviews to allow prospective members a chance to meet chapter members.
