2 Welcome On behalf of the Interfraternity Council, I would like to welcome you to Eastern Washington University. At EWU there are many different ways to get involved and experience college life that is all around us. One way to get involved and gain a sense of community is through joining a fraternity. By joining a fraternity you will gain leadership skills, build bonds of brotherhood that will last a lifetime and make memories that capture some of the greatest experiences you had in college. So you may think, joining a fraternity is not for me or I m not the fraternity type. Fraternities are made up of people from all backgrounds and each fraternity has something different to offer, it s just a matter of connecting with a group that has similar interests to you and embodies similar values. Fraternities offer many opportunities for leadership development, community service and philanthropic events. As a member you are connected to a network of friends, brothers and alumni that have shared in the experience of being a member of something bigger than them. Joining a fraternity is not for everyone, but how will you know for sure until you try it out? I encourage you to check out formal recruitment Sept. 20 through 24. You will get to visit chapter houses, meet current members and get your questions answered. The best part is, participating in formal fraternity recruitment is free, so what do you have to loose? Check out the Sorority and Fraternity Life page ( on the Eastern Washington University website to learn more. Greek Vocabulary Active a fully initiated member of a fraternity. Bid a formal invitation to pledge a fraternity. Initiation the ceremony through which the pledge becomes a full member of a fraternity. Interfraternity Council (IFC) the governing body of the fraternity system at Eastern. Legacy a potential new member whose grandparent, parent or sibling is a fraternity member. Pledge a member of a fraternity who has not been initiated. Pledge Class the group of men who pledge a fraternity at the same time. Recruitment Counselor (Pi Chi) Pi Chis are a select group of members from each fraternity who act as counselors to help you during recruitment. The Pi Chis are there to answer your questions and to take you to the various events. During recruitment, the Pi Chis are temporarily disaffiliated with their chapter in order to give you impartial advice. They are experienced and trained to help, so seek them out during recruitment. They are there for you. Potential New ember (PN) a student who has registered for formal recruitment and is attending recruitment functions. Formal Recruitment Formal recruitment is the time when each fraternity opens its doors to gain new members. During recruitment, you will have the opportunity to meet and be entertained by every chapter. This time gives you the chance to meet everyone and select a chapter with which you feel most comfortable. As well as making new friends, you will be educated about campus involvement, community services and school programs. Fraternally, Richard Arquette Director of Recruitment IFC
