2 Keynote Speakers Dana N. Humphrey, Ph.D., P.E. Dean of College of Engineering & Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Dr. Dana N. Humphrey is Dean of Engineering and Saunders Professor of Engineering Leadership and Management at the. He joined the in 1986 after receiving his PhD in civil engineering from Purdue University. Dr. Humphrey has served as dean since He serves on the Boards of Directors for Educate Maine, Maine Space Grant Consortium, and Maine Discovery Museum. In addition, he is a member of the Alfond Leaders Advisory Committee. Shari Templeton, B.S. Science & Technology Specialist Maine, Department of Education Ms. Templeton has gained her expertise from 31 years in service to four school districts in Maine and Connecticut, most recently as a teacher at Wiscasset High School and as RSU 12 s K-12 Science Coordinator. Templeton earned a Bachelor of Science from Taylor University in Indiana with a triple major in Communications, Environmental Science and Systems Analysis and has completed advanced science coursework. Luncheon Speakers Mohamad Musavi, Ph.D. Associate Dean of College of Engineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering Dr. Musavi is currently the principal investigator on an NSF INCLUDES pilot project that is working to broaden STEM participation for females and minorities with active learning in community-based stormwater research. Prior to his current position, he was the chair of UMaine s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has a distinguished record of successful outreach engagement in STEM in the state of Maine and beyond, and in engineering education and research in the areas of smart grid, power systems, and intelligent systems including neural networks, robotics, and computer vision. He is a member of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the President of Maine Engineering Promotion Council (MEPC) Board of Directors. He is the recipient of the prestigious IEEE-USA STEM Literacy Educator-Engineer Award and the College of Engineering Service Award, both in He has been the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI for 44 federal and industry grants and collaborated with over 20 research and industrial organizations nationwide. He has acted as the advisor for 48 graduate students and over 50 undergraduate students, and has published 128 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, which have been cited over 1100 times.

3 Cary James Science Department Head Bangor High School Mr. Cary James has a BS in chemistry and an MS in Plant Pathology. He has received numerous teaching awards including the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement Teacher of the Year for Maine 2009, Pulp and Paper Foundation Maine Teacher Award 2009, the Francis Crowe Society Honorary Engineering Degree from the 2010,New England Institute of Chemistry Maine State Teacher Award 2011, the New England Water Environmental Association Public Educator of the year Award 2013, and the 2014 IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) K-12 STEM Literacy Engineer- Teacher Partnership Award. His students have excelled in many national and international level science competitions including the 2010 National Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) winner, the 2011 Bjorn von Euler Innovation in Water Scholarship winner, and the 2016 first place INTEL Science Talent Search Global Good award winner. Mr. James has a passion for improving the quality of water for people in developing countries and has focused student research on water sanitation, conservation, and remediation. In the classroom he works to differentiate instruction for students using an evidence-based inquiry approach. Presenters John Cangelosi Physical Science Bangor High School Don Denico Dept. Leader, CAD and Applications to Auto CAD, Wood Tech. I & II, Residential Housing Const. Bonny Eagle High School Mr. Denico has been an Industrial technology teacher for the past 25 years. He graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a B.S. in Technology Education and a M.S. in Educational Leadership. Mr. Denico has taught at Bonny Eagle High school for the past 20 years and has been the department head for the past 18 years. Mickie Flores Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School 6th-8th grade Science teacher Ms. Mickie Flores has been a science educator since 1983, teaching middle school science classes, high school chemistry and biology, and content and methods courses as an adjunct instructor for the State University of New York at Potsdam. Mickie was the 2004 recipient of the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship award and participated in the Fab Lab, the educational outreach program for MIT s Center for Bits and Atoms. She is the 2015 Hancock County Teacher of the Year and currently teaches 5th through 8th grade science at Deer Isle Stonington Elementary School in Deer Isle, Maine. Mickie earned her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her Master s in Education from Elmira College.

4 Wilhelm Alexander Friess Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Friess research background includes the broad field of experimental fluid dynamics (including laser diagnostics, and aerodynamic design and performance optimization), as well as renewable energy, energy efficiency and engineering education. He has industrial experience as an entrepreneur in the Solar Energy field, and he has been active as consultant and design engineer working on a variety of projects, including participating in the design and engineering of South Africa s yacht for the America s Cup Current work focuses on energy efficiency and engineering education. Dr. Friess is working on building infiltration and infiltration measurement, as well as energy retrofits in extreme climates (i.e. Dubai). Education work includes the integration of Spatial Visualization modules using 3D printed manipulatives into the engineering design graphics coursework, novel homework assessment methods, and K-12 engineering education. Dr. Friess is the faculty advisor of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) section as well as the 3D printing club, and also advises the AIAA Design Build and Fly projects in the Capstone course. Georgianna Piete 6th Grade Science and Mathematics Teacher Reeds Brook Middle School For the past 20 years, Ms. Piete has been a 6 th grade science and math teacher, currently teaching in the RSU22 district at Reeds Brook Middle School in Hampden, Maine. Ms. Piete has a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from SUNY Binghamton and a Master of Science degree in education from the, Orono. For the past five years, Ms. Piete s collaboration with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension has given Reeds Brook students the opportunity to take part in Exploring Engineering, an after-school STEM program Raul Urbina Postdoctoral Research Scientist Dr. Urbina is currently a Research Scientist in the department of Mechanical Engineering at the. He is currently investigating the state of engineering related instruction in K-12 schools in Maine. Dr. Urbina has done extensive experimental and analytical work on renewable energy turbines. For almost eight years, he has worked on projects that focused on the numerical and experimental analysis of the performance of renewable energy devices. Raul has ten years of research experience, including six years of research on tidal turbines, at the.

5 Laura Wilson 4-H Science Professional Ms. Wilson is a 4-H Science Professional with the Cooperative Extension. Her role is to provide connections for youth to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math resources of UMaine, and through the 4-H STEM Ambassador program, to other UMaine System campuses. Wilson has a MS in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from UMaine and over 15 years of experience in STEM outreach with a variety of audiences.
