2 We Are USCB. We Are The Sand Sharks. The University of South Carolina Beaufort is the only full-service baccalaureate institution in the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina. It is USCB s mission to respond to regional needs, draw upon regional strengths and prepare graduates to contribute locally, nationally and internationally through its mission of teaching, research and service. USCB serves a racially and cuturally diverse student body, including military personnel, veterans and their dependents, and draws students from throughout the Lowcountry, the nation and around the world. USCB enriches the quality of life for area residents of all ages through its academic programs, continuing education, artisitic and culural offerings, community outreach, collaborations with regional initiatives and life-long learning opportunities. With two campuses the Hilton Head Gateway Campus in Bluffton and the Historic Beaufort Campus USCB serves all of the Lowcountry, and its rich history dates back to the original 1795 charter of Beaufort College. The Beaufort campus of the University of South Carolina was created in 1959, and USCB was granted four-year baccalaureate status in In fall 2016, USCB will boast more than 2,000 students with more than 900 living on campus. While USCB is part of the University of South Carolina system, its funding is derived almost entirely independently only four cents on the dollar of USCB s funds come from the state. USCB relies heavily on local government and private donations, and it is only because of the generosity of the people of the Lowcountry that the state s newest four-year institution has enjoyed such immense success. 1

3 We Are USCB. We Are The Sand Sharks. As part of its transition to a full-service institution, USCB launched its intercollegiate athletics program in 2007 with men s and women s cross country. Today, the Sand Sharks compete in nine sports baseball, softball, women s soccer, men s and women s golf, men s and women s cross country, and men s and women s track and field. USCB is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and The Sun Conference. USCB s teams have enjoyed great success in their short tenure. The men s and women s golf teams are perenially ranked in the top 25 nationally, the cross country and track and field teams send individual qualifiers to the national championships on an annual basis, the women s soccer team has made the Sun Conference playoffs the past three seasons, the softball team claimed the Sun Conference championship in only its second season of competition, and the baseball team reached the NAIA World Series in 2012 and won the Sun Conference regular-season title in The Sun Conference is one of the premier athletics conferences in the NAIA and includes teams from South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. In most years, the league boasts multiple top-25 teams in every sport it sponsors and its top teams are competitive on the national stage. With more than 150 student-athletes, most of which are on partial athletics scholarships, USCB relies heavily on private fundraising and corporate sponsorships to sustain the success of its programs.
