2 Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) Policy Statement of Principle Intent: Careers Education, Information Advice and Guidance provide a bridge via which pupils move not only to further education, vocational training or employment, but to the next stage of their development as members of society. Lifelong learning is a key concept for all students leaving St Peter s School and this includes providing opportunities to develop key employability and enterprise skills which are highly valued by employers, colleges and universities. By engaging parents and the local community our aim is for every child to fulfil their potential and be inspired to achieve a successful future, develop high aspirations and be ambitious. It is with this objective that our CEIAG programme has been developed. Introduction: From September 2012, the DfE (Department for Education) has determined that schools have a statutory duty to secure independent and impartial careers guidance for their pupils and strongly recommend that a quality programme of careers education continues to be provided to students in years 9 to 11. From September 2013 this was extended to include years 8 to 13. CEIAG is an integral part of the teaching and learning process at The Deepings School and is relevant across all subject areas. The school s PDLS (personal development and life skills) programme incorporates many careers activities although all curriculum areas have a role to play in this process and subject leaders are encouraged to provide work related contexts for their pupils learning. All students are provided with access to high quality, impartial and unbiased careers information and equal opportunities for work-based learning. Effective delivery of CEIAG, which includes provision for self-development, career exploration and career management, will enable students to have a greater understanding of the requirements for their career interests. It is intended that this will have an important impact in terms of raising their aspirations and help students make challenging but realistic plans for their future career progression. The CEIAG programme of delivery, the content and evaluation is co-ordinated and managed by the Senior Leadership Team. Objectives: All students have an entitlement to CEIAG and the DfE recommend careers and work related contexts are incorporated into the school curriculum. At St Peter s School we help pupils to achieve the following learning outcomes: Understand themselves and develop their full/unique potential (both academic and personal) and to overcome barriers to progression and challenge stereotypes 2

3 Investigate and research careers and job opportunities and develop a general understanding of the world of work Understand the requirements and possibilities within Further and Higher Education and gain knowledge of Apprenticeships and vocational pathways Are aware of and understand the raising of the participation age Able to interpret information and to review and adapt their plans Recognise, develop and apply their skills for enterprise and employability Engage with ideas, challenges and applications from the business world Have experience (direct or indirect) of working practices and environments Know how to access unbiased, impartial, up-date IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) Have opportunities to learn about STEM related careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) How the learning outcomes will be achieved: All students from year 7 onwards will have access to a comprehensive and impartial programme of careers and work related learning activities. This will include formal delivery of dedicated CEIAG topics via PDLS lessons, external visits, internal presentations and collapsed timetable events. In addition there will be associated information evenings for students and parents/carers. A careers plan will be published on the school website at the start of the academic year, which will include a career plan of scheduled activities. St Peter s adheres to the following Vision set out by Sam Gyimah (2015) Education and Childcare minister: A system where all schools provide consistently high-quality careers support, in line with their statutory obligations, including more employer engagement and work experience opportunities. And this does not have to be traditional work experience, where young people risk spending a week or 2 in an office making tea and running errands. The best schools are increasingly making use of work insight days, work experience that runs for one afternoon a week over a whole year, or employers coming into schools to run lessons that link directly to the curriculum The school will work closely with The Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership to provide opportunities for our students and the Huntingdonshire local schools Work Experience group. Priorities for improvements in CEIAG will be linked to the School Development Plan. Legislation and guidance documents referred to during the development of the programme are: DfE Mapping Careers Provision in Schools and Colleges in England- July 2015 DfE Careers Guidance and Inspiration in Schools Statutory Guidance March 2015 DfE Careers Guidance and Inspiration in Schools April 2014 The Education Committee report on careers guidance - 23 January 2013 DfE Careers Guidance Action Plan and Careers Statement September 2013 DfE New Guidance on Work Experience October 2013 The ACEG Framework A framework for careers and work-related education (April 2012) HM Government (2011) The Education Act 2011 The duty to secure independent and impartial careers guidance for young people in schools DfE (2011) The Education Bill changes to the delivery of careers guidance 3

4 DfE (2011) Wolf Review of Vocational Education Government Response DfE (2010) Towards a strong careers profession: An independent report by the Career Profession Task Force DCSF (2010) Careers education framework 7-19, London, DCSF Equality Act (2010) Government paper (2010) Building a Big Society CfBT Education Trust (2009) Raising the Participation Age DCSF (2009) Quality, Choice and Aspiration Donaghue, J. (2008) Better Practice: A guide to delivering effective careers learning EBP Child protection and work experience guidelines Information: Careers Displays will be eye-catching and regularly updated around the school to include job advertisements, open days and Further/Higher Education information. Careers Department/Library will be well maintained, kept up-to-date and include a range of easily accessible resources, including work-related DVDs and university prospectuses. ICT: all students will be encouraged to develop ICT skills and impartial research into post 16 options via the local Cambridgeshire online prospectus: UCAS Progress and the national Careers Service Website: Resources will also be available via the school s website. Bulletin: all other information will be provided to students via parent mail, news bulletins, notices or to targeted subject/curriculum areas as necessary. Data protection and sharing: students and/or their parents/carers should be aware that basic destination and on roll school data is provided to the Local Authority upon request and in support of the student, but there is the opportunity to opt out if required. Additional Needs support is provided for students when completing specific tasks, as determined by the Additional Needs team. IAG Officer to meet with SENCO and student to help student decide on options post 16 and support annual reviews where deemed necessary. Interviews: the Heads of Year and Pastoral Managers and Mentors will meet with students on an informal basis to provide general advice relating to future career planning and option choices. All year 11 students will be interviewed by our own Information Advice and Guidance Officer employed as a permanent member of school staff. The focus of these interviews is on career ideas, motivation, raising achievement and discussion regarding Post 16 option choices and progression routes. Assessment data which can include predicated grades and/or information relating to performance and intended progression routes will be provided to Cambridgeshire County Council where appropriate and in compliance with the current Local Authority requirement. The raising of the participation age came into effect from September As a result, any year 11 student who is at risk of becoming NEET (not in employment with training, education or other training programme) will be referred to the Local Authority Youth Support Service Guidance Adviser 4

5 for additional support. These interviews take place during normal school hours or via careers drop-in sessions. Interviews for sixth form students will be undertaken by The IAG Officer and members of the school s sixth form team. Staff development: Designated members of staff will be encouraged to attend relevant training to develop existing methods or to integrate new initiatives, which support the PDLS programmes of study for financial capability and economic wellbeing and the recommended requirement for the provision of CEIAG. Parental involvement: The school encourages and promotes parental involvement through its CEIAG programme, which includes a number of parent information events. Parents working in local business also contribute to school activities, as do other members of the local community. Parents are invited to comment on the CEIAG programme and there are regular communications through parent mail, news bulletin and the website to keep parents/carers informed of events and to provide feedback from such activities. Cross references: The following policies and documents also support the CEIAG process: - Equality and Diversity Special educational needs School Development Plan Safeguarding and Child Protection Partnership agreements with external agencies Resourcing: An annual CEIAG budget is set and agreed between the Head and School Business Manager.. Review and Evaluation procedures: The Careers and IAG Manager, IAG Officer, Head Teacher and PDLS team will be responsible for monitoring, reviewing and evaluating the programme of activities through a range of methods: Team meetings for informal feedback and discussion. Teacher, student and parental responses to events and topics Analysis of the destination data and student tracking documentation Career guidance interviews and mentoring feedback School s Student Council Formal meetings with external agencies the Youth Support Service Employers and other school contributors A students evaluation form, which allows students to review and comment on the CEIAG programme Work scrutiny and completion of diagnostic questionnaires and career plans The CEIAG policy will be reviewed annually by the Careers Manager in accordance with school policy and to reflect future statutory requirements and recommendations. 5
