1 Free Annual Training for Administrators & Staff Spring 2015 Northampton Community College is conducting FREE statewide training for Personal Care Home staff and administrators and staff licensed agencies serving individuals with intellectual disabilities. The training is funded by the Department of Public Welfare s Bureau of Human Services Licensing and each continuing education and diabetes class is equal to 3 annual training hours. Participation is limited to staff persons working in Pennsylvania s licensed Personal Care Homes, Assisted Living Residences, Community Homes for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, Family Living Homes, Adult Training Facilities and Vocational Facilities for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. Classes Locations & Schedules Classes are being held in four regions throughout the Commonwealth: Central, Southeast, West and Northeast Pennsylvania. 4 Behaviors of Depression, Dementia & Delirium Provides education for personal care home staff on the prevention, identification and care strategies for residents with delirium, dementia, including Alzheimer s disease and depression. It will look at tools that can be used in the personal care home setting and focus will be on the assessment of cognitive issues in adults. Course Code: DPW108 New Bloodborne Pathogens & Hazard Communication Provides basic regulatory information related to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases. Additionally, it offers chemical hazard awareness while discussing the 2012 Hazard Communication Standard and the Global Harmonized System (GHS) of labeling, pictograms and safety data sheet requirements. Course Code: DPW158 New Common Medical Emergencies Diabetes, stroke, heart attack and choking are just some of the common medical diagnoses direct care givers must deal with in a PCH environment. This course will focus on the fundamentals of providing aid to residents who may experience an emergency complication with these diseases. Course Code: DPW163 Creative Activity Planning Includes the importance of mental, social, physical and spiritual activities in the daily lives of our senior population. Focusing on how to make it age appropriate, enthusiastic and fun while meeting the needs defined in support planning in the PCH setting. Participants will gain the knowledge to adjust programs to changing resident needs through planning and creative interventions. Course Code: DPW133 New Diabetes Update for Experienced Personal Care Home Staff ONLY For personal care home staff who have administered oral medication or insulin in the last year or who have already completed Introduction to Diabetes. Program will review the care of residents with diabetes, as required by b., and is facilitated by a Certified Diabetic Educator. Includes diabetes updates, care and treatment options for residents with diabetes; instruction on the proper technique for administering insulin, oral medications, and for recognizing signs and symptoms and corrective actions for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Prerequisite: Prior experience administering oral medications and insulin in a personal care home setting within the last year or successfully completing Introduction to Diabetes Course Code: DIABS104 New Fire Safety & Interface with Emergency Response Provides information and techniques that will allow the participant to identify and assess fire hazards and threats. Fire prevention will be emphasized within a discussion of regulatory responsibilities. Course Code: DPW166 Infection Control Participants will learn the fundamentals of infection control with a focus on the personal care facility resident. Content includes transmission of infections and blood borne pathogens, role of immunizations, and practices to keep residents and staff safe. Course Code: DPW130 Interventions of Depression, Dementia and Delirium Further your understanding of identifying cognitive issues and how to apply practical use of interventions and strategies when caring for residents with depression, delirium, and dementia, including Alzheimer s disease. Course Code: DPW109 Introduction to Diabetes Care for Personal Care Home Staff Students will be instructed by a Certified Diabetic Educator to inform personal care home personnel on diabetes, diabetic care and treatment. This will provide staff with a base knowledge of diabetes and teach them the proper techniques for the injection of insulin via needles and pens. This diabetes patient education course meets 55 Pa.Code (b) requirements. Course Code: DIABS105 New Introduction to Safety Committee Discusses the formation and function of safety committees and associated safety meetings as it relates to personal care homes. The intention is to bring workers and management together in a non-adversarial, cooperative effort that promotes safety and health in the workplace. Methodologies discussed will include establishing safe procedures, site inspections, evaluating safety and health programs, accident investigation and recommending changes in workplace conditions and practices. 5 New Mental Illness - Understanding the Interventions Provides resources, tools and materials to address difficult to manage behaviors seen in mental illness. Participants will review resident assessment processes to determine appropriate level of care and accommodations, when to recommend a level of care change and review of options for next level of care. Case scenarios will allow the participant to build skills to identify red flags and develop interventions that will prevent potential unsafe behaviors from occurring. Course Code: DPW160 New OSHA Required Forms & Training Discusses the standards promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that require the employer to train employees in the safety and health aspects of their personal care home jobs and workplaces. Additionally, it will assist employers in identifying and fulfilling their responsibilities for posting certain records, maintaining records of illnesses and injuries and reporting specific cases to OSHA. Course Code: DPW162 New Pain Management & Quality of Life Managing pain while maintaining quality of life can be a challenge. This course will review the many aspects of pain assessment and common treatment modalities used to allow residents to continue living their life to the fullest. Course Code: DPW165 Prevention of Dehydration and Malnutrition in the Aging Population Prepares Personal Care Home administrators and staff to understand and competently provide basic nutrition care to residents of a facility. The Personal Care Home staff will learn to identify risk factors that place their residents at nutritional risk, strategies for preventing under/malnutrition and appropriate recommendations and treatment for clients who are identified as under or malnourished. Topics covered include: nutritional needs for older adults, physiologic changes that accompany aging, nutrition related concerns involving obesity, polypharmacy, alcohol abuse, dysphagia and Alzheimer s disease. Course Code: DPW131 New Staff Training & Morale Conventional training is designed to cover essential work related skills, techniques, and knowledge. Personal development is much more than conventional training. When you develop people, you inspire them to be better, more energized, pursuing goals. All of these things promote performance in life and on the job. This course will provide the skills for developing your staff through personal growth (enabling learning and development) while creating far more exciting, liberating, motivational opportunities for your staff, and your Personal Care Home. Course Code: DPW164 Skin Care Participants will learn the fundamentals of how to care for a resident s skin to maintain healthy skin and prevent skin breakdown. Principles of care are integrated with day to day tasks of the supervisor and direct care staff persons in a personal care home setting. Course Code: DPW103 Stress Management Provides education for personal care home staff on the impact of stress on one s body with an emphasis on stress reduction. It will look at interventions to assist the staff in addressing personal and professional stressors. Course Code: DPW102
6 Registration/Withdrawal/Frequently Asked Questions Although these classes are being offered free of charge, registration is still required for attendance and for processing of your certificate. Yes, all three (3) hours of class may count toward training hours. Is lunch provided with the training? Lunch is not provided and restaurants are not always located near the training site.
