3 Combating Terrorism Center Senior Associate Dr. Nelly Lahoud recently led a threeweek Department of Social Sciences AIAD to Cambodia with CDT Christian Burgos- Sanchez (Class of 2016), CDT Jordan Isham, and CDT Conner Drum (both Class of 2018). The group was immersed in Cambodian culture through community work and cultural study. Dr. Lahoud and the Cadets built a garden for a school that cares for an underprivileged community and taught English to young Cambodians. They also learned about the rich history of the country (e.g., visiting the great temples in Siem Reap) and its dark recent history under the regime of Pol Pot by visiting the S21 Museum (The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum) and the killing fields. CTC Director LTC Bryan Price is pictured with participants in the U.S. Foreign Policy Summer Institute at Bard College following his presentation on U.S. counterterrorism efforts. Combating Terrorism Center Director LTC Bryan Price was invited to speak to international scholars attending the U.S. Foreign Policy Summer Institute at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, on July 15th. The program hosts academics 3
4 from 16 different countries for a 6-week academic exchange program and is funded by the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. LTC Price's talk was entitled, "The Evolution and Challenges of U.S. Counterterrorism." Department of English and Philosophy Trauma, Narrative, and Collaboration: I Was There Film Workshop From July 14-19, one representative from the Department of English and Philosophy worked alongside four wounded American and 10 Israeli Defense Force Soldiers in an I Was There film workshop in New York City. During the workshop, participants explored the collaborative nature of narrative in filmmaking as a medium to promote psychological and emotional recovery for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Over the course of five days, the workshop broke the large group into four teams, and each of these teams worked with professional filmmakers to produce a short film that expressed its different individuals understanding and attempts to deal with residual trauma from battlefield injuries. The event is but one of several similar workshops recently held at Army installations by the Patton Veteran s Project, an organization founded by Benjamin Patton, grandson of General George Patton. The films from the workshop are expected to be available for public screening within the next week at The POC for this event is MAJ Mike Kieser at micheal.kieser@usma.edu. (l) MAJ Mike Kieser (far right) poses with members of the Belev Echad organization and wounded warriors from the Israeli Defense Force and U.S. Army during a social mixer atop a residential building July 14 in Manhattan. Aside from exploring film and narrative as a therapeutic technique to heal psychological wounds, the group visited several tourist sites and dedicated time to social engagements to build group cohesion. (r) IDF Veteran Dan Meir (center) collaborates with MAJ Kieser (left) and USAF veteran Spirit Padilla during the shooting of a film scene in Times Square on July 16.
