1 SCOUT CHALLENGE 2019 FAQs General Information 1. What is Scout Challenge 2019? This is a Council-wide Scouts BSA and Venturing camporee over March 22-24, SCOUT CHALLENGE 2019 will be a great event. It will be a memorable, jamboree-like experience of a lifetime immersing Scouts BSA and Venturing Youth in patrol and individual adventure, activities and competitions. 2. Why should our unit attend Scout Challenge 2019? For most youth this will be the biggest camp they will attend. Troops will arrive Friday night and camp in sub-camps throughout Bert Adams. Saturday will be filled with individual and patrol-based activities. We have over 50 activities planned. There will be something for all age groups, interests and capabilities. This is a great opportunity to experience Scouting at its best. 3. When will Scout Challenge 2019 be held? March 22nd to March 24th, Where will Scout Challenge 2019 be held? Bert Adams Scout Camp. 5. Will there be Scout Challenge merchandise? Yes. Scout Challenge branded merchandise will be available. We encourage you to order merchandise online prior to the event. Pre-ordered items will be available for pick up prior to the event. 6. Will there be a pre-event Unit Leaders meeting? Yes. This will be held Sunday, March 3 at the Atlanta Area Council Volunteer Support Center. Unit Registration 1. Who can attend Scout Challenge 2019? SC19 is open to all registered youth in Scouts BSA Troops and Venturing Crews as of March 22, Can female Scouts participate? Yes. While female Troops will not be formally established until February 1, they can register now to attend SC19. Please contact Veronica Bramlett ( vbramlett@atlantabsa.org ) to arrange for an early registration of a Scouts BSA Troop that will form on or after February 1, Can Scouts and Venturing Units outside of the Atlanta Area Council attend? Yes. While this event is primarily focused on AAC units, out of council units may register and attend SC19.

2 4. Can Webelos or Cub Scouts participate? Unfortunately, this event is designed for our older youth. Participants must be members of a Scouts BSA Troop or Venturing Crew at the time of the event. There is a similar Council-wide Camporee for Cub Scouts March Registration for this event: 5. When do I need to finalize the names of Scouts and Leaders attending? Unit leaders can register their units now and estimate the number of Youth and Leaders attending. A deposit will be needed to secure the registration. Units are asked to add names of participants as soon as possible. Participant names must be entered into the registration system by February 28, What is the cost to attend Scout Challenge 2019? Until January 31st, the cost is $25 per Scout and unit leader/adult. After January 31, the per participant rates are $30 for Scouts and unit leaders/adults. Registration closes on February 28th, If my unit registered prior to January 31, 2019 and I want to add additional Scouts or Adults to my roster, will I incur additional charges? If your unit has registered prior to January 31, any additional Scouts and Leaders added after January 31, 2019 will be at a higher rate ($30 for Scouts and unit leaders/adults). 8. Can I reduce the number of participants and receive a refund? Due to long lead times in organizing an event of this type, deposits are non-refundable. Units will need to pay for the number of Youth and Unit Leaders/Adults registered even if they do not attend the event. 9. What does the registration fee cover? The registration fee covers the cost of the SC19 program and each participant will receive an SC19 patch. 10. Are there Camping Scholarships available? There are a limited number of camping scholarships for those units/scouts in need of assistance. Please contact Veronica Bramlett, Ph (770) , ( vbramlett@atlantabsa.org ) for details. 11. 3 Program and Activities 1. What is the general schedule for the weekend? Friday evening units arrive and set up camp. Saturday morning there will be a flag ceremony followed by program activities starting around 8.45am and ending at around 5pm. On Saturday evening there will be a campwide Arena Show. Religious services will be held throughout the weekend. 2. What type of activities will be offered? There will be a wide variety of activities during the weekend. There will be individual and patrol-based events. Is there a patrol-based competition? Yes. For those Scouts BSA patrols that want to compete in an inter-patrol competition, there will be a Scouting skills based competition on Saturday. This activity will be run by the Order of the Arrow. The winning patrol will be recognized at the Saturday evening Arena show. More details will be available in the Leader Guide. 4. Will there be religious observances held during Scout Challenge 2019? Yes. Religious observations are planned for all major religions. More details will be provided in the Leader Guide. 5. Will there be a Midway at Scout Challenge 2019? Yes. There will be a midway where vendors and organizations will provide information and demonstrations of Scouting interest. If you are interested in participating in the midway please contact Denise Chiavetta.

4 Volunteers 1. Where are volunteers needed? We are expecting up to 5,000 total Scouts and Scouters at Scout Challenge This requires a lot of volunteers to run a safe and fun camporee. Volunteers are required in the following areas: Parking Security Program Activities Arena Show Sub-Camp Ambassadors Registration and Check-in 2. How do I register to volunteer? Volunteers can register on the Scout Challenge 2019 registration page: 3. I will be attending with my unit but can volunteer for some time? Yes. We are requesting that each unit attending provide at least 1 volunteer adult to help run program activities on Saturday. More information will be available in the Leaders Guide. 4. What is the cost for volunteers? For volunteers that are not attending with a Troop or Crew, there is a charge of $15 for the weekend. Each volunteer will be provided with a hat and Scout Challenge 2019 patch. There is also a food option for $20. The food option provides meals for Friday evening, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Sunday breakfast. 5. I can only volunteer for Saturday? Please register as a volunteer and note on your registration that you are only available Saturday. 6. I am with the OA (Order of the Arrow) do I need to register as a volunteer? If you are helping run the OA Interpatrol Challenge on Saturday only, the OA has a separate process to account for your participation. Please contact Mac McKinley for more information.

5 Logistics 1. When does check in start? Check-in times will be finalized soon. We expect that Friday check in will open around 4pm and close at 11pm. Saturday morning checkin will be available for any units arriving Saturday morning. All units are encouraged to arrive Friday night. 2. When can Unit trailers be dropped off? Exact dates and times will be available soon but we expect to be able to allow Unit trailers to be dropped off anytime after Wednesday March 21st. For Units arriving with trailers on Friday evening, they will be able to dropped off at that time. 3. Where will we park? We plan to have all vehicles parked on Bert Adams property. Most parking will be in and around Camp Jamieson. There is a short walk from there to the main camp. Shuttle bus service will also be available. 4. Where will we camp? Units will camp Jamboree-style in assigned spaces in open fields and campsites. There will be limited room so we ask units to minimize their camping footprint by pitching tents closely together. Unit leaders will camp with their units. Volunteers will camp in AdVenturing Camp and other assigned areas. 5. What are the food arrangements for Units? Units are expected to bring their own food and prepare/cook their own meals. There is no facility for food storage so units should plan accordingly. There will be food trucks on site during Saturday. More information will be provided in the Leader Guide. 6. Can I arrive on Saturday? Units are encouraged to arrive on Friday evening, but we anticipate some will not be able to join us until Saturday morning. 7. When will be Leader Guide be released? We hope to have an initial Leader Guide available in December. An updated version will be released in February.
