Welcome to the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) program at Wright State University! I am pleased that you are considering a career in the United States Air Force. On 21 August, we will conduct our New Student Orientation Program (NSOP) in Rike Hall 160 at Please see the included schedule for specific information on the day s agenda. NSOP provides an excellent opportunity for cadets to become acquainted with AFROTC, meet your fellow cadets, and set the stage for a possible future as an Air Force officer. NSOP is designed for both you as a new cadet and your parents, so I hope to see everyone there. 2. Your journey through the ROTC program is a joint partnership between the cadets and the Detachment 643 cadre. Our officer and enlisted staff provide you with the best military training possible as well as extensive opportunities for you to develop both the leadership and followership skills needed in your future career. We oversee the administrative side of our mission to develop students into future Air Force Officers. You, as members of the Cadet Wing, run the detachment. These experiences give you a sampling of what you will encounter as you begin your career as an Air Force Officer. During your first two years as a General Military Course (GMC) cadet, you are trained by the Professional Officer Course (POC) cadets. These cadets successfully completed their initial training and graduated from Field Training, a rigorous 13-day training and evaluation period that all cadets attend prior to entering the POC. As you progress through ROTC and move from a GMC cadet to a POC cadet, you have the opportunity to develop your leadership skills and train your fellow cadets. 3. Our mission to train each of you starts on day one. New Student Orientation is MANDATORY unless there is a valid scheduling conflict due to your host university requiring your attendance at another academic event. This program provides you a chance to learn what it means to be in ROTC and to build a bond with your fellow cadets. 4. Congratulations on taking the first step towards an Air Force commission. Welcome to the 643th Cadet Wing here at Wright State University, and thank you for deciding to join the Air Force ROTC program! As cadets and future officers in the United States Air Force, you are about to embark on what will be one of the best times of your life. As a fellow student and soon-to-be graduate, I know what college life is like and how important it is to start off on the right foot. That is my hope for you during our New Student Orientation Program (NSOP). We want to establish a strong foundation for you to build on through your years in college and ROTC. Whether you are an incoming freshman, or someone who has completed some college, everyone can gain something through the AFROTC program. 2. This year's NSOP has been designed with all of you in mind. It is our goal to get you up to speed as quickly as possible, and to provide you with information that will help you succeed in the AFROTC program. At NSOP, we are going to provide you with a Cadet Guide and Detachment Standard Operating Procedures (Det SOP) which will teach you some of the basics of ROTC and military life such as, uniform wear, military customs and courtesies, and training standards. 3. I urge you to thoroughly read through this packet, which contains all of the information that you need. Please pay close attention to the documents you will need to bring to NSOP. Welcome to the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) program at Wright State University. I am Technical Sergeant Jennifer Carey, the Noncommissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC), Personnel. I look forward to meeting you and assisting in your pursuit of an Air Force career. In order to get you started, I will need the following documents listed below (unless you have already brought them to our office and had them copied): a. Birth Certificate with raised seal (Original only) b. Proof of Citizenship if naturalized (Copy, if applicable) c. Social Security Card (Original only) d. Males: Selective Service Card (Copy) e. JROTC certificate (Copy, if applicable) f. Civil Air Patrol award certificates (Copy, if applicable) g. Air Force ROTC Pre-Participatory Sports Physical (Form 28) h. 6 Important Information RSVP s. Orientation is not mandatory, but it is highly encouraged as a way to get to know your fellow cadets and cadre and to give you needed information to get off on the right foot in AFROTC. Driving directions and map of campus is included in this package. We will be holding NSOP in Rike Hall 160. NSOP visitors will most likely want to park in Lot 2, the visitor parking lot, or lot 7 for WSU students who have their parking pass. adjacent to University Hall (see map below). Parking is free in visitor lot. Reporting. All NSOP participants should report to Rike Hall 160 (see attached map) between 12:45 and 1:00pm on Tuesday, 21 August Physical Preparation. To make the transition into ROTC, you need to begin preparing yourself by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Below is a basic 3-week Physical Conditioning Plan that is designed to prime you for our morning Physical Training (PT) sessions. These exercises can be done throughout the day. As a tip, instead of doing nothing during a TV commercial, do a set of push-ups or crunches. Broken up, these sets of exercises can be manageable. If this workout routine is too aggressive, take out a few sets or do fewer reps per set. If it is not enough, add more sets or more repetitions to each set. The key is to always push yourself to do better. 7 Weight Standards. To the right are the weight standards for males and females. Just like the Fitness Assessment (FA) which is administered every semester, you must meet the Air Force weight standards. If you are currently not within the regulations, we will work with you to ensure you receive every opportunity to make it within regulations. The table gives you an idea of the weight chart against which you will be measured. Height is measured from the floor to a plane perpendicular to the top of your head with your head and back against a wall. This height measurement (to quarter inch increment) is then plotted to the male or female weight table. Your maximum allowable weight (MAW) is the upper limit. A cadet above MAW cannot activate his/her scholarship until they are below that upper limit. Cadets are weighed at the start of each term; those within 10 pounds of MAW are monitored closely with monthly weigh-ins. Overweight cadets (above MAW) require extra counseling and monitoring to ensure standards are met. * For every inch < 58 inches, subtract 2 pounds; for every inch > 80 inches, add 6 pounds. 10 Grooming Standards. In addition to physical fitness and weight standards, there are Air Force Grooming Standards. These will be covered in the Cadet Guide, and will be discussed at our first Leadership Laboratory (LLAB). Drugs and Alcohol. Both are prohibited while at NSOP, regardless of age. The Air Force has no tolerance for illegal drug use, and alcohol is prohibited until you are 21 years of age. What to Wear. We prefer you wear Business Casual attire (khakis or nice jeans, polo or button-down) Remember your picture will be taken. What to Bring. You need to bring the following items with you to NSOP: - Blue or Black pen, pencil, highlighter - Notebook - Any previously mentioned documents - This packet (Print it out) - Snack/Lunch- will not be provided - $10.00 cash for the uniform polo shirt Emergencies.
