1 Instructors: David Yunt, Lt Col, USAF, (Ret) - david.yunt@madriverschools.org Stebbins High School Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) 1900 Harshman Rd, Riverside, OH Competitive Drill Team Syllabus Course Description This course is designed to provide cadets with the skills necessary to compete in all phases of drill as well as color guard at the state, regional and national levels of drill competition. Cadets will learn to follow simple instructions, pay attention to detail and utilize teamwork. In addition, cadets will gain exposure to; Americana, general military knowledge, customs and courtesies, military bearing, discipline, leadership skills, and followership skills. The cost to participate is $100 ($75 if receiving free or reduced lunch). Fees must be paid directly to the Stebbins Treasurer no later than Friday, September 28. Parents (only) may contact the Stebbins Treasurer to set up payment 1

2 arrangements prior to the due date. Failure to pay fees will make students ineligible to ride the bus and participate during competitions. Cadets will provide a copy of the receipt to instructors for tracking purposes. Meals: Cadets will be required to provide their own meals (approximately $5-10, or BYO) during the event. JROTC will pay for cadet meals after the competition and during overnight trips (if applicable). Uniform Requirements Drill Team members will be held to a higher standard of uniform wear to include, dry cleaning, shoe shining, strict adherence to hair care standards and shaving. Students whose uniform doesn t meet standards may be withheld from competition events or not allowed to travel with the team. Cadets in drill are required to wear the uniform to all drill events, as well as the standard for uniform wear in their AFJROTC class. Cadets will earn uniform passes that will allow them to be exempted from two uniform days after every drill meet. Practice Schedule The majority of preparation will take place during the first period drill class. If possible, we ask that students arrive no later than 7:30AM to the JROTC Classroom for attendance and announcements so that practice can begin promptly at 7:40AM. Occasionally, we will require additional practice time to prepare for a competition. Due to limited practice space and student after school commitments, the additional practices will take place in the mornings approximately 6:30AM- 7:30AM and will typically last only two weeks prior to a drill meet. Instructors will provide advanced notice and help coordinate car pools for those students with transportation concerns. Competition Schedule The schedule below is tentative. Cadets will receive changes/updates in a timely manner. All drill meets take place on a Saturday. Please note, some of the drill meets are scheduled the same day as an ACT or SAT test date. While college preparation takes priority, we ask that cadets plan ahead and schedule test dates that do not conflict with the drill meets. - Oct 27: Springboro (*ACT test date) - Nov 3: Midview, (*SAT test date) Overnight event: leave Friday after school, return Saturday evening - Dec 8: Wayne (*ACT test date) - Feb 9: Delaware - Feb 23: Westland - Mar 9: Tecumseh (*SAT test date) - Mar 16: Stebbins - Mar 23: Air Force Regionals (Nutter Center) - Apr 6: Lebanon (during Spring Break) Grading Procedures/Evaluation Class attendance and participation (with required uniform items) In-class assignments Tests and quizzes Uniform inspections Grading System A 93% - 100% C 73% - 76% A- 90% - 92% C- 70% - 72% B+ 87% - 89% D+ 67% - 69% B 83% - 86% D 63% - 66% B- 80% - 82% D- 60% - 62% C+ 77% - 79% F 0% - 59% 2

3 Failing Grade Policy This section is to advise you of the policy regarding failing grades and continuation on the Drill Team. Mad River Local Schools (MRLS) states students competing in sports activities maintain a 1.67 GPA compete during drill meets. Grade checks will be conducted periodically throughout the quarter. Cadets whose grades place them near or below the required GPA requirements will be required to sit out of practice and use the class period as a study hall to improve their grades. Parents will be notified when their student is placed in study hall. Study Halls will last until grades improve officially via a progress report or unofficially via Progress Book and meet MRLS policy. Missed practice time impacts the student s ability to participate during scheduled drill meets and ultimately remain on the team. Instructors make the final determination on a student s ability to participate in a drill meet based on participation, grades, attitude etc. The Student Handbook all students are issued at the beginning of the school year will outline all athletic eligibility rules required by the district and state. It is not our goal to remove a cadet from drill, however, if a cadet cannot maintain academic viability, one area that must be considered is that drill may be a reason for the academic short fall. Resources available to the student for grade improvement includes school study tables and the JROTC Kitty Hawk Air Society. Conduct/Discipline - No food, gum or drinks - No sitting during practice - Students must wear shoes/clothing that will allow them to participate in practices (no flip flops, open-toed shoes etc) - Cell phones are to remain inside the classroom and never kept on your person during class - If not in a routine and in the SAC, must be at parade rest on the sideline - When a routine is on the floor, the routine commander is in charge THE INSTRUCTOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHANGE THIS SYLLABUS AS NEEDED 3
