Under the Detachment s current leadership, it is easy to point to the many opportunities that have been provided for you to serve our community. However, as an individual, I often wonder if I am worthy of such an honor to provide servant leadership to the members of the SFG Detachment. However, I am proud that my individual personal commitment is solid. Every day I offer my most sincere efforts to help cultivate the idea of positively impacting our community through our various volunteer efforts. What about you? 3 Activities Committee Input for November Despite weather forecasts which, if correct, would have dampened a few of our October events we stayed pretty dry. The morning of the Versailles Apple Festival we set up with wonderful weather, however, a couple hours in we were hanging on to the awning and tying down. Fortunately, the angry looking front passed by quickly. Many thanks to Marines Dudenhoeffer, Morgan, Mayhew, Jorgenson, Craig & Auxiliary member Diana Miller for laughing in the face of the forecast and showing up to insure a successful recruiting/pistol raffle booth. The following Monday we had 27 people on board for our hay ride at Binder Park. The crowd included a large number of children and grandchildren who had a great time at the fire cooking hot dogs and s mores. Marine Manny Ortiz, his wife Jordana and their kids joined us and Manny submitted his membership application too. You should meet him soon! The detachment had another successful Trivia Night/Halloween Costume Contest on the 20 th with 60 players on deck. About half showed up in costume to compete in the contest for cash and prizes, half the fun is never knowing what kind of costumes you ll see. The winners competed as a team making up the gang from Charlie Brown. Auxiliary member, Barb Diemler, always up for some fun and competition took second in her stylish poodle skirt. Thankfully, Barb didn t choose to reprise her cameo of Grandma got run over by a reindeer from Christmas karaoke a few years ago, which had a few of us grabbing our phones to call 911 when we saw her lying on her back with limbs askew in the air. We had a special visit by Master Claus who rolled in following the special Toys for Tot s event at Capital City Productions. Thanks to Trivia volunteers Marines Rogers, Baskette, F. Miller, J. Sanning, Craig and Auxiliary members Crowe, M. Diemler, Sweigart, Schulte & Sanning, for insuring the crowd had fun, good food and the detachment had a successful night. As of this writing our October dining out at Viet s is still a few days off so it s we ll move on to November and another good month. Wed. November 7 th & 8 th Trip to Branson Veterans Homecoming: Commandant Greg Craig and myself are heading South to set up a trial recruiting/pistol raffle sales table during the big Veterans Homecoming Week celebration in Branson. It looks like we should have two extra seats if any other members would like to join us and help test the waters. If so, contact Alan at sfgactivities@gmail.com, or and we will fill you in on the details. Fri. November 9 th 243 rd Birthday Gathering in the Bunker: This is our annual informal birthday get together at the barracks. We will open the hatches at 1730 and you may begin the toasts then and we will cut the cake at I look forward to seeing everyone there as we raise glasses and share a piece of cake to celebrate the United States Marine Corps. Then we will continue the celebration at our formal birthday ball the next night at Capitol Plaza Hotel. Contact Bill Plate at gearhartball@yahoo.com to lock on your Ball tickets. Mon. November 12 th Money & Head Count due for Christmas on Main Street Show: Our detachment has once again been invited to join Lake Ozark Detachment for the Christmas on Main Street Show on Thursday December 13 th at 1900 at the Main Street Music Hall in Osage Beach. We had a good crowd go down last year and join the Lake area Marines for dinner and the show. If you would like to go and want the group ticket rate of $20 each for the show I need your head count and money or check, (made out to Main Street Music Hall), no later than November 12 th. If we have enough people going we will let you know in advance where we will meet in Jefferson City to load the van and any additional vehicles needed and head out shortly after 1700 to the Golden Corral in Osage Beach for dinner and then on to the show. Anyone not interested in dinner may just meet us at the theater for the 1900 show. For additional info or to give your head count and coordinate payment Alan at sfgactivities@gmail.com or call Thur. November 15 th - Dining Out: This month we head to El Espolon 915 Eastland Dr, after a long absence, for our informal monthly dining out. Head counts are needed by end of day November 13 th to Alan at sfgactivities@gmail.com or call We will meet there at 1830 and as always, please invite potential members to join us. See you there! Sat. November 17th Trivia Night (Open to the public please help spread the word to family, friends, co-workers, etc.): We will be short a few of our regular volunteers for this Trivia Night, if you are able to help out please contact Alan. Doors, bar, & kitchen open at 1800 with Trivia kicking off at $60 per team, with a max of 6 people per team. Cash prize to the winning team and we ll

4 also have door prizes and a Pre-register to guarantee your spot, do so by 11/13/2018 and all team members will receive an extra door prize ticket. For additional info or to register Alan at sfgactivities@gmail.com or call and leave your name and number, and we ll contact you back. If you have suggestions for League activities, see Alan at the meeting, sfgactivities@gmail.com or call in February 1976 as a Sergeant. He joined the Central MO Detachment in 1986 or 87 and was initiated into the Military Order of the Devil Dogs in 1988 and was advanced to Pedigreed Devil Dog in 1992 at the Supreme Growl in St. Louis, MO. Greg, currently serving a second tour as Detachment Commandant has held numerous positions in Detachment and Department and assists with the advancement of Devil Dogs to Pedigreed Devil Dogs at the Supreme Growl. From the Auxiliary Happy Birthday, Marines! Big, small, young, old Happy Birthday to all! By the time you read this we will have finished up the BBQ season, ran another successful Holt Summit Soup Kitchen, helped with the Toys for Tots Fundraiser at Wendy s and started the Trivia Season. Are you ready to relax before the holiday season hits? Oops, it is already here. Detachment, Auxiliary, local Marines and family members joined in for the Pound #77 sponsored hayride at Binder Park Monday evening.. The kids had a great time cooking hot dogs & s'mores then burning off some energy running & playing in the wide open space near the fire ring. Member Profile Input for Newsletter Greg Craig Member Profile Commandant Greg Craig: Greg, born April 4, 1951, joined the Marine Corps from Jefferson City when he was 21. He left for MCRD San Diego in April 1972 and following boot camp went to Ft. Gordon, GA for school to become a 5811, Military Policeman. Following MOS school he PCS d to Camp Elmore in Norfolk, VA. His more interesting calls as a military policeman were responding to an electrocution, where following a basketball game a sweaty service member sitting on a metal staircase outside the barracks went to rise for colors, lost his balance and fell back into the electrical wiring running into the barracks and was killed instantly. The second incident occurred when dispatch gave the description of a vehicle sitting in front of Greg at a stoplight. The occupant had just assaulted her Captain and Marine Craig arrested her, cutting her escape short. Greg left the Corps If you have not responded about the Birthday Ball make sure you contact Marine Bill Plate for your reservation. There will be a Hospitality Room so let me know on meeting night if you are able to bring something to keep the spirits up until the festivities begin. I hope you are all dusting off your dancing shoes in preparation for this wonderful evening of military ceremony and camaraderie. Because we did not have a quorum at the October meeting we could not vote on certain matters. I hope to see several faces at the November meeting so our charity donations are not delayed. The Detachment is not having a meeting in December. Instead they want to have a family-style Christmas Party. So let s make sure we have a quorum in November to get our business done for the year otherwise we will need to have a short meeting in December. We still have the Christmas Parade float to work on for December 1 st, let s work together to make this happen. Everyone is invited to attend the November 11 th Veteran s Day service at St Peter s Church and then the program. Strange Celebrations to Think About: November 1 st, Men Make Dinner Day November 14th, Spicy Guacamole Day November 17 th, Take a Hike Day November 23 rd, Buy Nothing Day

5 December 11 th we are hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive, Please share this with your family and friends. Blood donations save lives. If you need a ride to the meeting please contact me. Marine Corps History: Selected November Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance 1 November 1983: 300 Marines of the 22d Marine Amphibious Unit staged an amphibious and helicopter landing on the island of Carriacou, 15 miles northeast of Grenada, in a search for Cuban military installations or personnel. 17 Grenadian soldiers were captured, and arms, ammunition, and training sites were found. The next day the 22d MAU left the Caribbean area and proceeded to Beirut, Lebanon to replace the 24th MAU. 8 November 1990: President Bush announced that he planned to add more than 200,000 U.S. troops to those already deployed in Operation Desert Shield in the Persian Gulf area. The number of Marines in the area would be doubled by the addition of II MEF units from the Corps' east coast bases, and the 5th MEB from California. Within the next two months, Marine strength in the objective area would increase to nearly 90,000 Marines. 10 November 1921: This date marked the first formal commemoration of the birthday of the Marine Corps as 10 November. On 21 October 1921, Maj Edwin McClellan, OIC of the Historical Section, HQMC, sent a memo to MajGen Commandant John A. Lejeune, suggesting that the original birthday of 10 November 1775 be declared a Marine Corps holiday to be celebrated throughout the Corps. Accordingly, on 1 Nov 1921, Gen Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47 summarizing the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps, and directed that it be read to every command each 10 November. 13 November 1982: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, containing the names of more than 13,000 Marines who lost their lives in Vietnam, was dedicated this date at the Memorial site in Washington, D.C. The dedication and parade that preceded it were part of a week-long National Salute to Vietnam Veterans. 17 November 1918: The 4th Marine Brigade, as part of the 2d Division, American Expeditionary Force, began its march to the Rhine River, passing through Belgium and Luxembourg, as part of the American forces occupying a defeated Germany. 20 November 1943: The 2d Marine Division, commanded by Major General Julian C. Smith, landed on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands. After seventy-six hours of bitter fighting during which almost 1,000 Marines died, and more than 2,000 were wounded, MajGen Smith declared the island secure. 24 November 1992: Marines lowered the flag at Subic Bay, U.S. Naval Facility, Republic of the Philippines, for the last time during ceremonies to turn over the facility to the government of the Philippines. The withdrawal ended almost a century of U.S. presence in that nation. 25 November 1968: The conclusion of Operation Lancaster II ended 10 months of action against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army troops in the west-central sector of the demilitarized zone region. Over 1,800 enemy were killed, 42 captured, and 913 weapons seized during the operation. 27 November 1950: In a carefully planned assault, eight Chinese Communist divisions in Korea launched a massive attack which had as its expressed purpose, the destruction of the 1st Marine Division. This action led to the successful southward Marine Corps attack out of the Changjin (Chosin) Reservoir to the coastal port of Hungnam Information from Marine Corps University:
