3 OBJECTIVE Objective The objective of this document is to create a record of the people who served as members of the command teams of the various formations and units that made up CFCS / CFCC: During its life span from 1965 to 1994; and Where possible, to collect command team data on pre-cfcs / precursor units (i.e., pre-1965) and on successor units (i.e., post-1994) that continued after CFCC was disbanded. Challenges A big challenge is that most CFCS / CFCC units are now either disbanded or reorganized into other existing or new units. Also, much of the pre-1965 former single service data may be difficult to impossible to recover as records may no longer exist or are very difficult to locate. Data Sources The main sources of data collected for this document are: People The principle resource for this data would be the people who served in CFCS / CFCC, in its precursor (pre-1965) and successor (post-1994) units; Units Units collected and compiled data from their historical records and other artefacts; Books Other data was sourced in two important books - Semaphore to Satellite by BGen WJ Patterson and History of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals 1903 to 1961 by JS Moir; Unit Histories Individual unit history documents; Rogues Galleries Photo collections of former unit COs and RSMs / SSMs; Unit Plaques Plaques listing unit COs and RSMs / SSMs; and Internet Postings Various sites and documents found through Google searching. Data Collection Approach This Command Team list was initially developed by soliciting individual inputs from as many people and units as possible who served in or were part of CFCS / CFCC or in its precursor and successor units in any capacity. Draft lists were compiled and circulated to stimulate addttional thought and research. People are usually able to better see opportunities to contribute data when they see a partial list and start filling in blanks or noticing errors, rather than looking at a blank sheet of paper. Additional inputs were received and the draft lists were updated to create a new version. This iterative process is intended to allow as many people as possible to contribute to it and to keep updating and re-circulating the list until we can gather no additional input or corrections. Results Sharing All data included in this document will also be shared with CFCC successor units so that they may continue to use it to build out their unit histories over time. Suggestions, Additions and Corrections Should you have any suggestions for corrections, additions or modifications to this document, please them to Robert.K.Martineau@sympatico.ca. 6 CFCC ORGANIZATION ON ITS DISBANDMENT ON 15 JULY 1994 Over its life span, there have been changes to the force structure of the Canadian Armed Forces, including CFCS / CFCC as units were assigned to it, reassigned elsewhere, disbanded, and some new units were units created. For baseline purposes, we will use the force structure of CFCC as it existed on 15 July CFCC Headquarters, eight formations and 58 units shown below (including CFE Comm Gp and its two Sqns), and about 5,500 regular, reserve and civilian staff. Formation Regular Force Reserve Force 70 Communication Group (10 Units) 71 Groupe des communications (6 Units) 72 Communication Group (10 Units) 73 Communication Group (7 Units) 74 Communication Group (11 Units) 70 Communication Group Headquarters (Trenton) 702 Communication Squadron (Petawawa) 706 Communication Squadron (Borden) 707 Communication Squadron (North Bay) 708 Communication Squadron (Trenton) Quartier General 71 Groupe des communications (St Hubert) 711 Escadron des communications (Valcartier) 715 Escadron des communications St Hubert) 72 Communication Group Headquarters (Halifax) CFS Debert (from 1985, and formerly 720 Comm Sqn and Det Debert) 724 Communication Squadron (Gagetown) 726 Communication Squadron (Halifax) 727 Communication Squadron (St John s) 73 Communication Group Headquarters 731 Communication Squadron (Shilo) 733 Communication Squadron (Winnipeg) 74 Communication Group Headquarters (Vancouver) 740 Communication Squadron (Nanaimo) 742 Communication Squadron (Edmonton) 700 Communication Squadron (Borden) 705 Communication Squadron (Hamilton) 709 Communication Regiment (Toronto) Communication Reserve Electronic Warfare Squadron (Kingston) 712 Communication Squadron (Montreal) 713 Regiment des communications (Beauport) 714 Escadron des communications (Sherbrooke) 721 Communication Regiment (Charlottetown) 721 Communication Troop (Glace Bay) 722 Communication Squadron (Saint John) 723 Communication Squadron (Halfax) 728 Communication Squadron (St John s) 734 Communication Squadron (Regina) 735 Communication Regiment (Winnipeg) 736 Communication Squadron (Thunder Bay) 737 Communication Troop (Saskatoon) 741 Communication Squadron (Victoria) 744 Communication Regiment (Vancouver) 745 Communication Squadron (Edmonton) V
