Congratulations and welcome to Troy NJROTC! You are in a leadership development program, one that will test and challenge you, and one that will provide you a wide variety of life skills. NJROTC offers you the chance to be a FOLLOWER, LEADER, and TEAM PLAYER, while displaying a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance, and individual discipline. This syllabus is intended to serve all cadets, so read it carefully. Troy NJROTC has grown tremendously over the past two years. We have over 400 cadets spread out among 20 different class sections. Be responsible for your classroom. 2. Be seated in your seat when the tardy bell rings. 3. Be prepared for each class, be it PT, Uniform and Inspection or academics. 4. Your three years of experience have given you the foundation from which you can motivate, organize and lead your fellow cadets. Your daily hallmarks should include attention to detail, leading by example and forethought. Due to our huge number of NS-4 cadets, we have split the NS-4s into two groups: leadership class and NS-1 mentor. NS-4 Leadership Class: You will cover personal finances and advance leadership topics. There will also be a class project, such as preparing and conducting a brain brawl for other schools. NS-1 Mentors: In class, you will be assisting the NJROTC teachers with lessons for the NS-1s, ensuring that uniforms are properly worn, showing how to perform drill, and supervising while participating in physical fitness activities. Your grade will be based on your participation in NJROTC as a whole and your performance in class. You are the student teacher. It is your responsibility to be prepared. NS-3 focus: As emerging leaders in Troy s NJROTC program, you are expected to master the ability to wear a correct NJROTC uniform, to follow directions, and to be responsible for your actions. You will learn how to motivate others, plan activities, and be accountable for group actions. Your grade will be based on your participation in NJROTC as a whole and your performance in class. For third year cadets, NS-3 class topics are leadership, national security, and naval operations. We will discuss how to be a better leader and follower, as you prepare for your senior year. NS-2 focus: You have completed your first year in NJROTC, and for the first time, you will be setting examples for those junior to follow. Your focus should be on mastering your personal NJROTC - 2 -
3 performance in appearance and drill, while putting forth your best personal effort in class. Your grade will be based on your participation in NJROTC as a whole and your performance in class. NS-2 academics are divided into three parts: Maritime History, Leadership, and Global Studies. We will study HISTORY with a focus on how ships at sea have affected national interests. We will also explore how the United States of America is an island nation in a world covered by 71% of water. During the LEADERSHIP lessons, we will also explore some of the ways to be a good leader, and how to motivate, care for and mentor others. In the GLOBAL STUDIES classes, we will cover how economical, political and social factors impact cultures. NS-1 focus: As new cadets in the NJROTC program, in many ways you will find this class completely different from any other class you have ever had in school. You will become part of a team, and your efforts, good or bad, will affect the entire team. We are looking for participation, teamwork, motivation, and a desire to learn and lead. Everyone can be successful, and we will do everything we can to help you succeed. With the right attitude, honest effort and strong desire you will become a good leader. Your academic progress in NJROTC will include two textbooks, the Cadet Field Manual (CFM) and the Introduction to NJROTC book. Both will be used to help you acclimate to NJROTC, and assist you to wearing your uniform all day at school on designated uniform days. NJROTC Notebook is RECOMMENDED: The notebook will help you stay focused with your NJROTC class. The notebook may contain other subjects. Your note taking abilities will be checked frequently during academic days. The notebook is the only material that may be used on tests that are deemed Open Notes Quite simply; it is open notes not open book. Learn to take good notes is the key. NJROTC Grading Criteria: Requirements Grade: A Grade: B Grade: C Grade: F Unexcused Uniform Days (without makeup) Uniform Wear Violations Not dressing out for PT NJROTC Academic Average 80%+ 70%+ 60%+ Below 60% Community Service 6 hours NS4: CIC NS1/2/3: 1 event 3 hours NS4: CIC NS1/2/3: 1 event Not required Not required Advance in Rank Once Once Not required Not required Fall TAFM, Fall Veterans Veterans Parade, Parade, AMI Mandatory Events AMI Fall AMI Not required Spring Awards Spring Awards Night Night
4 Notes: 1. Unexcused Uniform Day: cadets who do not wear their uniform on a prescribed uniform day (due to absence or otherwise) must make up that uniform day on a predetermined day (Thursday or Friday) set by the NSI. If the cadet fails to make up that uniform day, their grade will be reduced, as per the above list. 2. Uniform Wear Violations: Cadets who are caught changing out of/into their uniform during school hours on a uniform day will be charged with a uniform wear violation. Cadets who are on sports teams that have a game/match on uniform day will be inspected by an NSI and be allowed to change into their sports team attire at lunch. 3. Failure to dress out for PE: Cadets must wear athletic clothing and footwear appropriate for PE. Cadets will not get credit for wearing street clothes or inappropriate footwear on PE days. There is no make-up for failure to dress for PE. 4. Excusals from PE must be a note signed by either a parent or doctor. Cadets are still expected to dress out in their PE uniform unless excused by the NSI prior to class. 5. NJROTC Academic Average will be based on the average of achieved points earned divided by the maximum possible points. Classroom participation, PE participation, uniform grades, and classroom academic achievement will all be considered in this average. 6. Community Service: NJROTC is a service oriented program. Cadets are expected to help in some way with a Troy NJROTC sponsored community/school/njrotc service event. These events can include a combination of community service and unit service, and include gate guards, stadium cleanups, squad bay cleanups, and school color guard events. Cadets active in departments can have half of their required time counted by doing departmental work outside of school hours. 7. Expected Advancements in Rank: a. NS1 One rank per semester, maximum permanent rank is PO3 b. NS2 One rank per semester, maximum permanent rank is PO1 c. NS3 One rank per semester, maximum permanent rank is CPO d. NS4 One rank per semester, maximum permanent rank of CPO e. If holding a billet with a frocked rank, cadets must still achieve a permanent rank promotion each semester until a permanent CPO. 8. Mandatory Events: Cadets are expected to help with the Troy Athletic Field Meet (TAFM) in October, attend the Veterans Day Parade in November, attend the Annual Military Inspection (AMI) in December and the NJROTC Awards Ceremony normally in late May. Helping with the TAFM will also count for community/unit service hours. Platoon Commander and Mustering Petty Officer assignments: will be made by the NJROTC teacher and rotated throughout the year to maximize the number of cadets who get to experience these peer leadership positions. The Platoon Commander (PC) and Mustering Petty Officer (MPO) take roll and are in charge of the conduct of the class
5 Professional Briefing: each semester, all NS-1, NS-2 and NS-3 cadets will give a briefing during class to their classmates on a military or leadership related subject approved by the NJROTC teacher. This required briefing must be 5-7 minutes in length and include some form of audio visuals. The grade for this briefing will be part of the NJROTC academic average. More details on the briefing will be given during the course. Troy NJROTC website: Our website is Refer to it frequently to keep up with homework assignments, battalion events and what is going on at Troy NJROTC. Community Service Requirements: ALL NS-3/4 cadets will take charge of at least one community service event. This community service requirement is a graded event. There are several methods in filling this graded requirement. These requirements will be discussed in class for greater clarification. TRAINING TIME OUT is one of the most important lessons to learn and practice while enrolled in NJROTC. Training Time Out is a safety net that addresses possible hazards in training, instruction, application and recreation. It is paramount to know and understand how training time out works and when to utilize it. NJROTC is a leadership course of instruction. This educational program is student led and teacher supervised. As cadets grow, mature and learn both the properness and importance of positive leadership they may be considered for leadership positions. These leadership positions are open and available to all cadets that apply themselves properly and accordingly. Leadership positions are not based upon gender. Participation is the key to learning and excelling. It is hard to promote a cadet into a leadership position if that cadet has not experienced some of the many events and competitions associated with NJROTC programming and community service. Although participation is not a grade determinate, it is a path to leadership positioning. A cadet cannot learn all that the program has to offer if that cadet does not participate at various levels within the program. The concept will be greater explained during classroom instruction for greater understanding. THE WORD CONSISTANTLY STRESSED TO ALL CADETS: PARTICIPATION PARTICIPATION PARTICIPATION - 5 -
