3 Verification Committee: A Committee of at least three (3) members who verify and approve an applicant s application and supporting documentation submitted for membership to our Order. --W W. Glen Davis Award: See Convention Awards. Website: William Gardner Award: See Convention Awards. Woman's Relief Corps: Membership is open to all loyal womanhood without regard for ancestry. The organization is generally referred to as the Woman's Relief Corps. The WRC is one of the five (5) Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic. It is acknowledged as the Official Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. WRC: The acronym for the Woman's Relief Corps. --X-- --Y-- --Z-- 32 GLOSSARY and TERMINOLOGY --A Academy Awards Fund: Used to provide a monetary or gift award to a graduating student at each of the four United States Military Academies. See United States Service Academies Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic: There are five (5) Orders established by the authority of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR): Woman's Relief Corps; Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic; Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, ; Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. It is frequently referred to as the Allied Orders or the Allied Orders of the GAR. Above is the sequence which Comrade John R. Grate, Commanderin-Chief of the GAR, published in his GO #4 in which he also reminded his Departments that this is the way the Allied Orders should be arranged in official programs. Altar: The most prominent position in the center of the National Convention or Encampment, State Department, District, Tent or Detached Tent, when opened in the Ritualistic form. Resting upon the altar in open meetings is the open Bible and the line between the altar and the President may never be crossed when the Bible is open and the meeting is in session, unless prescribed by Ritual. Ancestor: Soldier, Sailor, Marine or member of the Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War under which one is eligible to PO Box 211, Springfield, Illinois New December 2013

Ancestor Certificate: (formerly Membership Certificate): Any member can apply for a Ancestor Certificate for each verified and approved ancestor by completing an Ancestor Certificate Application Form for each ancestor and sending the form(s) to the mailing address of our National Headquarters (along with the required fee for each certificate). Ancestor Star: A star pin can be purchased for each verified and approved Civil War lineal ancestor that is on file at our National Headquarters. Application: A form prepared and signed by those who want to join our Order. When submitted it must be accompanied with the supporting documentation proving they are a direct lineal descendant to that Civil War veteran. Articles of Incorporation: The legal document that created our corporation; the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, , Inc. See National Alliance of the Daughters of Veterans of the United States of America. ASUVCW: The acronym for Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. 2 --U Union Forces: Refers to men who served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Revenue Cutter Service from April 12, 1861 through April 9, United States Service Academies: Our Order currently supports the following academies: United States Military Academy, West Point, New York; United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland; United States Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut and the Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, Long Island, New York. United States Service Academy Awards Fund: A fund used to present a monetary or gift award to a graduating student each year at the United States Military Academies. See United States Service Academies. See Article XIV, Section 5D. --V VAVS: See Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service. Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS): Provides for volunteers in the Veterans Hospitals nationwide. The VAVS representative is appointed by the National President and is the liaison to the Veterans Administration and DUVCW. Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Fund: The VAVS Fund is supported by the Tents and Detached Tents contributions to enhance the VAVS program. It is administered by the National President and National VAVS Representative. 31

5 SV: The acronym for the National Alliance of the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America, predecessor organization to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. SVR: The acronym for the Sons of Veterans Reserve. --T Tent: A local unit of a State Department of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, The Tent is named for a Civil War nurse or patriotic woman of the era followed by a number. Tent #: Tents are numbered chronologically within each State Department and the number is never reused. If a number within a Department is inadvertently missed or skipped it cannot be gone back to as this would interfere with the chronology. A Tent name may be reused. Tent numbers are assigned by the State Department President. See Article III, Section 1. Transfer: A member in good standing may move her membership from one Tent or Detached Tent to another or from National or State Department Member-at-Large to a Tent or Detached Tent. See Article IV, Section 9. Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War: Membership is open to all female relatives of members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War as well as direct descendants of veterans of the Union Forces of the Civil War. ASUVCW is one of the five (5) Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic. Auxiliary: A local unit of the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (ASUVCW), which is preceded by a name and followed by a number. --B Badge Protocol: The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, , Membership Badge or any official badge may be worn alone, or in combination with any or all of the other official badges. The Membership Badge can be worn with or without attached ancestor stars and/or 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50 year pin or bar. The year pin or bar must be worn beneath the ancestor stars. Multiple official badges must be worn in a straight line beginning with the Membership Badge (worn on the member's left side, closest to the heart). The approved sequence of badges placed to the left of the Membership Badge is, starting with the highest current office, progressing to the lowest past office, and lastly the Memoriam Badge. The badge order is National President, Department President, Tent President, Past National President, Past Department President, Past Tent President and Memoriam. Badges: See Official Badges. 30 3

6 Bernice L. Way Award: See Convention Awards. Board of Trustees: The National Board of Trustees of the DUVCW is the governing body that sets policy for our National Headquarters and the Museum and the Library and Research Center in Springfield, Illinois. The Board consists of three (3) PNPs, two (2) PDPs, the National President and Council Member #1. The three PNPs and two PDPs are elected positions consisting of three year terms. BOT: Acronym for the Board of Trustees. Also used as B-O-T or B.O.T. Brother: A male member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). Bylaws: A set of rules for National, State Departments, Tents and Detached Tents subordinate to the Constitution of our Order. Tent Bylaws must be approved by the State Department and State Department Bylaws and Detached Tent Bylaws must be approved by the National President and Bylaws Committee. --C C&B: The acronym that refers to the Constitution and Bylaws. geographical Military Districts across the nation. SVR units participate in Civil War related ceremonies, parades, living history programs and reenactments. Southern Memorial Wreath Fund: Funds used to purchase wreaths that are placed at designated locations where Union Veterans are buried in the South and/or other historical monuments on Memorial Day. See Appendix for locations. Special Orders: Orders issued at all levels of command within the DUVCW and SUVCW to announce special events, memorials or other activities. See General Orders. State Department: A group of Tents generally within one or more states, e.g. Washington/Alaska and California/Nevada, whose members meet annually at a State Department Convention. Departments are chartered by the National President. State State Department Dues: Annual dues paid by each member of a Tent within a State Department that is used to cover the operational expenses of the State Department and State Department Convention. State Department Member-at-Large: A member of a State Department who does not belong to a Tent within that State Department. SUVCW: The acronym for Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. 4 29

7 --S Sesquicentennial Emblem: The Sesquicentennial Emblem of our Order symbolizes the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, sometimes referred to as the American Civil War, the War Between the States and the War of the Rebellion. This event began with Fort Sumter being fired upon on April 12, 1861 and ended on April 9, 1865 when the Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. Sister: A female member of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War: A patriotic and educational organization, it structure is similar to the Grand Army of the Republic. It was founded on November 12, 1881 and received their Federal Charter by Act of Congress August 20, The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is the legal heir to and representative of the Grand Army of the Republic. Sons of Veterans Reserve: The Sons of Veterans Reserve (SVR) is the ceremonial uniformed military unit of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). The National Military Department of the SVR consists of the General Staff and seven 28 Camp: The local unit of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW), which is preceded by a name and followed by a number. Caroline Scherer Award: See Convention Awards. Celia Williams Beckman Award: See Convention Awards. Certificate of Appreciation: The National Department, State Department, Tent or Detached Tent may elect to issue Certificates of Appreciation to members or persons not otherwise eligible for membership in our Order, but who have rendered some special service to our country or who have proven their interest in the advancement of our Order. See Article IV, Section 15. Charter: A document issued by the National President giving a State Department, Tent or Detached Tent the right to exist within the Order and under its regulations. The State Department and Detached Tent charters are signed by the National President and Secretary. The State Department President and Secretary sign the Tent charter. Charter Members: Those who join a Tent or Detached Tent at its Institution or within thirty (30) days from its Institution. Charter Sweep: The thirty (30) days immediately following the Institution of a Tent, Detached Tent or a State Department. See Article XII, Section 1D. 5

8 Chief of Staff: A person appointed to help raise funds for National, State Department or Tent. C-in-C: The acronym that refers to the Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Circle: The local unit of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic (LGAR), which is preceded by a name and followed by a number. Circular Letter: A letter circulated to all members (usually through the General Orders) regarding information on a specific topic. Civil War: Commonly used phrase to indicate the beginning of the war which began when Fort Sumter was fired upon on April 12, 1861 and ended on April 9, 1865 when the Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. It is also referred to as the American Civil War, the War Between the States and the War of the Rebellion. Closed Meeting: A meeting only opened to members in good standing. Any member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War who is a lineal descendant of a Union Veteran of the Civil War is also eligible to attend closed meetings, if permitted by the presiding officer. Order. They are described in the Ritual of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, which is available from National Headquarters. Ritual of the Order: A book entitled Ritual of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, See Ritual. Roll Call: Records maintained at National Headquarters that holds the names of those who have terminated their membership within the Order; honorable discharge, by death, dropped as a National Member-at-Large, Department Member-at-Large, from a Tent s or Detached Tent s active roll. The records contain the names of their ancestor and the unit in which the ancestor served. Roster: A book, also referred to as the National Roster, is printed each Fall under the auspices of the newly elected National President and lists all of the elected officers, appointed officers and committee chairmen and members. The Roster also lists each State Department and Detached Tent with their officers. State Department Tents are listed only by the Tent s name, number and location ROTC: Acronym for the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. See Reserve Officers Training Corps Medal. 6 27

9 PTP: The acronym used to recognize and honor a Past Tent President of the DUVCW. --Q --R Real Daughter: A daughter of a Civil War veteran who served as a soldier, sailor, marine or in the revenue cutter service. Reserve Officers Training Corps Medal: ROTC medals and campaign bars are awarded to cadets of outstanding ability and achievement in college or university ROTC programs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. The gold ROTC medal is given to only one graduating cadet per class, male or female, in a college or university ROTC program who is being commissioned into the military service. Colleges or universities having more than one ROTC unit on campus (i.e. Air Force, Army, Navy, and/or Marine Corps) may present the medal to one graduating cadet in each unit. Resignation: Means by which a person may ask to leave the Order or an office which they hold. Ritual: A series of exercises for opening, closing and operating the meetings and conventions and other ceremonies of our Order. These exercises have been handed down from the Grand Army of the Republic based upon the ritualistic work of its meetings and are optional at all levels within our 26 Commander-in-Chief: The title of the leader of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Comrade: A member in good standing may be permitted to hold memberships in not more than two tents in a state at the same time. See Article IV, Section 12. Constitution: Defines the Principles of the Order; of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, It also defines the Clause of Survival. Corps: The local unit of the Woman s Relief Corps (WRC), which is preceded by a name and followed by a number. COS: Acronym that refers to the Chief-of-Staff or the Chief-of- Staff activities. Also used as C-O-S or C.O.S. Council Member Number One: A member who is the Immediate Past President, of a Tent, Detached Tent, State Department or National Department. They are also referred to as Council #1. Convention Department and National: A yearly gathering of members of a Department or National to discuss the business of the organization and to elect new officers for the ensuing year. 7

10 Convention Awards: Awards given out at the National Convention consist of the following: 1. Lola Elliot Award: Department with the most new tents during the year. 2. William Gardner Award: Department with the most new members, excluding transfers and reinstatements. 3. W. Glen Davis Award: Tent with the most new members, excluding transfers and reinstatements. 4. George W. McVeigh Award: Tent over three (3) years old with the most new members, excluding transfers and reinstatements. 5. Julia Dent Grant Award: Detached Tent with the most new members, excluding transfers and reinstatements. 6. Elbert Jones Award: Department with the most new supplementals, excluding transfers and reinstatements. 7. Frederick Ahlvers Award: Detached Tent with the most new supplementals, excluding transfers and reinstatements. 8. Bernice L. Way Award: Department with the largest net gain. 9. Carolina Scherer Award: Department with the largest percent gain in members. 10. Celia Williams Beckman Award: Department with the largest number of members attending the Convention. 11. John Williams Stewart Wolfe Award: Department with the largest percent at the Convention. --P Per Capita Tax: An outdated term no longer used by the Order. See National Membership Dues and State Department Dues. PDP: The acronym used to recognize and honor a Past Department President of the DUVCW, WRC, LGAR, or ASUVCW. PNP: The acronym used to recognize and honor a Past National President of the DUVCW, WRC, LGAR, or ASUVCW. PP: The acronym used to recognize and honor a Past President of an Auxiliary, Circle or Corps of one of the female orders of the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic. President: The senior elected officer of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, , Woman's Relief Corps, Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, or the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Proceedings: The official record of a National or State Department Convention. Promulgate: To make known by open declaration; to put a law into action or force. 8 25

11 --O Official Badges: The official badges of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the ribbon colors are: Membership (striped red, white and blue) National President (solid gold) Department President (solid red) Tent President (solid light blue) Past National President (solid gold) Past Department President (solid red) Past Tent President (solid light blue) Memoriam (solid black) Open Meeting: A meeting that is open to all members and the general public, e.g., Opening Night at the National Convention. Order: A term that is synonymous with the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, It also may be used by any of the other Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic. Orders: Instructions issued at all levels within the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, May also be used to provide information, direct action and execute discipline. See General Orders. 12. Lulu Downey Calwalader Award: Department or Tent contributing the most research or accomplishment involving Civil War History. 13. Kady Brownell Award: To an outstanding, unselfish loyal American and a daughter of a Union veteran totally involved with the needs of today and with the same pride in our country and concerns for her fellowman as had Kady Brownell. Convention City Award: A $50.00 award may be given to a graduating High School senior in the Convention City area who can prove lineal descent from a Civil War ancestor and has evidenced an interest in history. Convention Fund: Used to defray National Convention expenses. See Article XIV, Section 5A. --D Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, : An organization of women who can trace their ancestry to a Union Soldier, Sailor, Marine or a member of the Revenue Cutter Service who served during the Civil War. Local units are called Tents. The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, is one of the five (5) Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic. 24 9

12 Department: A group of Tents within one or more states which meets annually at a State Department Convention. Departments are chartered by the National President. It is synonymous with State Department. Department Council: The Department Council consist of the Immediate Past Department President, who shall be known as Council Member Number One, and two (2) elected members, who shall be known as Council Member Number Two and Council Member Number Three. The Council devises and recommends such measures as will enable the Department to meet its necessary expenditures, and includes the financial review (See Article XI, Section 19) of the State Department's book of accounts and making a report thereof to the State Department Convention. The Department Council has no other authority. Department President: The senior elected officer of a State Department for the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, , Woman's Relief Corps, Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, and Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Each of the Allied Orders elects its own Department Presidents. Detached Tent: A local unit of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, , geographically located where no Tents are established within a State Department. The Detached Tent is named for a Civil War nurse or patriotic woman of the era followed by a number. as specified in the Bylaws and is composed of National President (presiding officer), Senior Vice President, Junior Vice President, Chaplain, Treasurer, Registrar, Five (5) Council Members, Patriotic Instructor, Secretary, Chief-of- Staff, Past National Presidents in good standing and the Board of Trustees. The National Executive Board meets during the National Convention. National Member-at-Large (NMAL): A member of the National Department who does not belong to a State Department Tent or Detached Tent. National Membership Dues: Annual dues paid by each member that is used to cover the operational expenses of the National Department and National Convention. National President: The senior elected officer of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Within the guidelines of the Federal Charter, Constitution and Bylaws, and assistance of the National Executive Board, she governs the day-to-day operations of the Order. She issues General Orders and represents the Order on a National basis. National Roster: See Roster. National Website: NMAL: Acronym for National Member-at-Large

The Memoriam Badge is the only official badge that can be worn on the left side during the National Convention Memorial Services. --N National Alliance of the Daughters of Veterans of the United States of America: The original incorporated name of our Order. The Order was incorporated on December 12, 1885, in Massillon, Ohio. The organization was officially endorsed in September of 1900 by the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1925, the name was changed to Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War at the 35 th National Convention held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At the 54 th National Convention in Des Moines, Iowa in 1944 the name was changed again by adding a comma, after War followed by National Council: Consists of the Immediate Past National President, who shall be National Council Member Number One and four (4) elected members who are known as National Council Member Number Two, Three, Four and Five, respectively. See Article IX. National Department: Composed of all members, including all State Departments, their Tents and State Department Members-at-Large (MAL), Detached Tents and National Members-at-Large (NMAL). National Executive Board: Has general supervision of the affairs of the National Department between business meetings, makes recommendations to National Department, performs duties 22 Detached Tent #: Detached Tents are numbered chronologically within each State, and a number is never reused. If a number within a State is inadvertently missed or skipped it cannot be gone back to as this would interfere with the chronology. A Detached Tent name may be reused. National Headquarters assigns and verifies the number for the new Detached Tent being instituted. See Article III, Section 1C. Dismissal: A member may be dismissed from the Order due to inappropriate behavior or failure to abide by the Constitution and Bylaws or Ritual of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Dispensation: Granted by the National President and shall not be granted to receive application, ballot, and initiate candidate at one meeting. The National Executive Board may review and, if necessary, censure and/or revoke any dispensation granted, providing such action is completed no later than 60 days of grant date. See Standing Rule 10 and Article VIII, Section 3B. District: A group of tents within a State Department that meets annually prior to the State Department Convention to discuss business of the District and to elect new officers for the ensuing year. Dropped: A member who has been dropped from DUVCW for nonpayment of annual dues. 11

14 Dual Membership: An outdated term no longer used by the Order. See Comrade. Dues: See National Membership Dues; Headquarters Assessment; See State Department Dues. duv: A member of our organization aged 8 to 18. duv is pronounced dove. duvs Fund: Used to provide activities and scholarships for members under the age of eighteen. The fund is also used to promote the history of the Real Daughters stories. duvs Scholarship: Monetary scholarship awarded annually at the National Convention to a graduating High School senior, who has been active as a duv for a minimum of two (2) consecutive years. See Article XIII, Section 6. DV: The acronym for the National Alliance of the Daughters of Veterans of the United States of America. It is the original name to the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, DUVCW: The acronym for Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Membership Badge: Badge of the Order that can only be worn by members and purchased from National Headquarters. The Membership badge or any official badge may be worn alone, or in combination with any or all of the other official badges. The Membership badge can be worn with or without attached ancestor stars and/or 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50 year pin or bar. The year pin or bar must be placed beneath the ancestor stars. Membership Certificate: See Ancestor Certificate. Membership Fund: Used at the discretion of the Membership Committee acting under the supervision of the National President. See Article XIV, Section 5B. Memorial Day: May 30 th of each year as directed by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John Logan in General Order No. 11. Each sister swears an obligation to always remember this day and pay tribute to the men of the Grand Army of the Republic. Sisters are encouraged to participate in the Congressionally-mandated celebration of Memorial Day. Memoriam Badge: The Memoriam Badge may be worn at any memorial or funeral event, including Memorial Day, Veterans Day or when honoring the passing of an Allied Order Sister or Brother or Veteran. The Memoriam Badge may be worn during the entire duration of a National Convention, State Department Convention, Tent or Detached Tent meeting in honor of those who passed. The badge may be worn in combination with any other official badge, but should 21

15 Lulu Downing Calwalader Award: See Convention Awards. --M MAL: The acronym for a State Department Member-at-Large, a member who does not belong to a Tent or Detached Tent. Massillon Daughters of Veterans: The name used by the Order from June 30, 1885 to December 5, 1885, prior to their incorporation as the National Alliance of the Daughters of Veterans of the United States of America. Massillon, Ohio: Location where the Order was organized in Member: A member of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, is a female at least 8 years of age who meets the criteria for membership set forth in the National Constitution and Bylaws and is elected to membership by the local Tent or Detached Tent. In areas, where State Departments do not exist, a member may become a National Member-at-Large (NMAL). Member-at-Large: A member who does not belong to a Tent or a Detached Tent. They are either members of the National Department (NMAL) or a State Department Member-at-Large (MAL). --E Elbert Jones Award: See Convention Awards. Employer Identification Number (EIN): A number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service to all business entities. This number is used to identify tax returns and other government information. Every Tent, Detached Tent and State Department is REQUIRED to have an EIN and report it to the National Treasurer. Failure to do so can jeopardize the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Federal tax-exempt status. Encampment: The official name given to the annual meeting of the Allied Orders and their Departments; the exception is the DUVCW which calls their encampment a Convention. The Allied Orders meet annually to conduct the business of the organization and to elect officers for the ensuing year. --F F. C. & L.: See Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty. Also F, C, and L and F.C.L. Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty: The principles upon which the Grand Army of the Republic and its Allied Orders were founded, and under which the Allied Orders currently operate. 16 --G Gallaudet Fund: Funds used to provide an American History Award to an undergraduate student at Gallaudet University. Gallaudet University: The University is located in Washington, D.C. for the hearing impaired. An academic scholarship is given to one or more students each year by the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, GAR: The acronym for the Grand Army of the Republic. GAR Living Memorial Fund: Funds used to provide scholarships to qualified upper class students at various colleges and universities who are lineal descendants of Union Veterans. GAR Scholarship: A scholarship given by the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, in the name of the Grand Army of the Republic. The scholarship is given to a sophomore, junior or senior in college or university who is a lineal descendant of a Civil War soldier, sailor, marine or member of the revenue cutter service. General Orders: Orders issued by the National and Department Presidents and, sometimes, Tent and Detached Tent Presidents. See Orders. George W. McVeigh Award: See Convention Awards. GO: The acronym for the General Orders. LGAR: The acronym for the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic. Life Member: A member of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, who has paid the requisite fee to the National Treasurer. Life Members are assessed State Department and Tent dues. Life Members of Detached Tent are assessed Detached Tent dues. A Life Member is exempt from National Membership Dues and Headquarters Assessment fees. See Article XIV, Section 4. Life Membership Fund: Uses interest income to pay for Life members National Membership Dues and Headquarters Assessment fees. Lineal Descendant: A direct lineal from you to the person who served for the Union during the Civil War ~ April 12, 1861 April 9, Logo: The Official Logo and crest of the Order. It is used as our letterhead and is the masthead of the National General Orders. A State Department, Tent or Detached Tent can use the official logo as their letterhead or masthead on their General Orders. See the logo image on the right. Lola Elliot Award: See Convention Awards

State Department Presidents shall also attempt to mirror the same contents for their Journals. JROTC: The acronym for the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps. See Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps Medal. Julia Dent Grant Award: See Convention Awards. Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps Medal: JROTC medals and campaign bars are awarded to cadets of outstanding ability and achievement in high school JROTC programs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and Marine Corps. The bronze JROTC medal is given to only one graduating cadet per class, male or female, in a JROTC program. --K Kady Brownell Award: See Convention Awards. --L Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic: An organization of wives, daughters, mothers and sisters of members of the Grand Army of the Republic. Membership is also open to women who can prove a direct ancestry to a Union veteran of the Civil War or to a Civil War nurse. They also accept adoptive descendants. LGAR is one of the five (5) Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic. Grand Army of the Republic: A fraternal organization of veterans of the Union Forces of the Civil War formed in Membership was open only to those who had fought in the Civil War in one of the Union Forces and as a result, when the last member died in 1956, the Grand Army of the Republic ceased to exist. The Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic were formed to keep green the memory of the men of the Grand Army of the Republic. The Grand Army of the Republic was made up of men (and at least one woman) who served in federal service in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or the Revenue Cutter Service. Grand Army of the Republic Living Memorial Scholarship: See GAR Scholarship. --H Headquarters Assessment: An annual fee required from each member that is used for the maintenance of the National Headquarters and Museum and the Library and Research Center in Springfield, Illinois. Honorable Discharge: A member in good standing leaving our Order can obtain an Honorable Discharge

18 Honorarium: An amount of money given to a National or State Department officer for performing special duties. Honorary Member: The National Department, State Department, Tent or Detached Tent may request from the National Executive Board Honorary Memberships for persons not otherwise eligible for membership in the Order, but who have rendered some special service to our country or who have proven their interest in the advancement of the Order. Honorary membership carries no rights or privileges to attend meetings except those of a public nature. See Article IV, Section 14. Honors: The titles of Past National Presidents, Past Department President and Past Tent President granted to an individual upon completion of a period of service to the Order. As each junior level is required to gain the next senior level, only the most senior honor is appended to a person's name. On formal occasions, honored persons may wear the Past President's badge of the appropriate color (predominantly Blue for Tent, Red for Department and Gold for National). Initiation: A ceremony where an approved lineal descendant is officially initiated into the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Insignia: A blue or black laurel monogram DUV in insignia is the Order s wreath with the the center. The official emblem. Installation: A process whereby officers are sworn in prior to taking office following an election. Until the installation takes place, all current officers remain in position. An installing officer is appointed by the Tent or Detached Tent President for Tent or Detached Tent installations and by the State Department President for State Department installations. The State Department, Tent or Detached Tent is required to report the names and addresses of all officers installed on the Officers Annual Report form, respectively. Institution: Rite that establishes a State Department, Tent or Detached Tent. --J Host Department: The State Department hosting the National Convention.
