2 2018 Youth Leadership Summit Training Youth Leaders What is YLS? Youth Leadership Summit, or YLS, is a youth training session that provides Scouts the fundamentals of a YOUTH LEAD TROOP and the understanding of how a troop is run by the boys. Scouts take away from the experience training that can be applied at their troop meetings and program activities. Who Benefits? The TROOP and the Scouts of the troop all benefit. How? Scouts are enabled through the tools and training provided during the course, showing them how a youth-led troop can make things happen, teaching the Scouts how to express themselves, and having Scouts plan their own activities. Adult volunteers benefit and are able to fulfill their actual role of guide and mentor. When? February 10, Registrations must be received by January 26, Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 10. Course ends no later than 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Where? Brotherhood Lodge, Camp Lowe, Camp Crooked Creek, Shepherdsville, KY located just off of exit 112 of I-65. Cost? Cost for youth (pre-registered) is $12.00 if registered prior to January 26, Cost for adults and staff is $ Fees include two meals, training materials, and event patch. If paying by check, please make checks payable to LHC-BSA and write in the memo section. Who should attend? Scouts in the rank of First Class or above who plan on or are already holding a youth leadership position in their troop. Scouts in the rank of Second Class will be accepted depending upon training seat availability. Maximum enrollment is 30 youth. Scoutmasters and adult leaders are asked to use discretion when selecting youth to participate in the training an immature Scout who disrupts training will negatively impact the training for other Scouts.

3 What should Scouts bring? (Adults too!) Boys are required to wear their field uniform shirt throughout the training. Other mandatory items include: Boy Scout handbook, paper/notebook and a pen or pencil. Scouts interested in serving on staff should contact William Shepherd. To be eligible for staff the Scout will have had to attend YLS or other youth Scout training (ILST, NYLT, OA Leadership Development, etc.), participate in staff training development days (to be determined by scoutmaster and Staff SPL).

5 2018 Youth Leadership Summit Disciplinary Procedures The purpose of the disciplinary plan is to outline guidelines for dealing with behavioral problems that may arise during any and all Scouting events. It is the intent of this plan to serve as the ideal means of dealing with problems involving one or more Scouts. Since behavioral problems and disruptive behaviors are as varied and diverse as the Scouts that attend training, this plan should not be interpreted as the sole means and method, nor will it restrict the youth staff SPL or the YLS Scoutmasters from utilizing more rational or productive measures based on specific situations. Good leadership, sensible thinking and cooperation are the true cornerstones of effective discipline, not rigid rules For infractions of behavior that is disruptive or unacceptable: 1) Attitude Adjustment Time. SPL will assign appropriate amount of work time for the Scout(s) to complete. This should be a reasonable time spent on a project or duty that is not without purpose or meaning. Examples include, but are not limited to: gathering or cutting firewood, cleaning sleeping area, equipment maintenance, etc. 2) Peer Review. If unacceptable behavior continues, the SPL and/or Instructor will confront the Scout(s) and address the following three points: a. The problem or behavior that needs to be corrected b. The plan of action to solve the problem (consequences, Attitude Adjustment Time, removal of privileges) c. Plan of action should problem or behavior continue 3) Leader Review. If the problem or behavior is not corrected by the above actions, the Scout(s) will report to the Scoutmaster in charge of the event. The Scout(s) will choose to try and resolve the issue in an acceptable manner or choose to be dismissed from the camp. If the issue cannot be resolved or the Scout(s) chooses to leave the camp, the Scout will call his parents and explain to them why he needs to be sent home and the parents will need to come and pick him up. Until the Scout s transportation arrives, he will be isolated from the other Scouts and remain in the company of adult leadership. If the Scout wishes to register for YLS for the next year, he must formally apologize in writing and in person to the YLS youth staff and adult leaders. 6 2018 Youth Leadership Summit YLS RULES 1. Staff and assigned Troop Guides are the YLS Scoutmaster s representatives. 2. ZERO TOLERANCE of foul language. If caught using foul language, procedures outlined in the disciplinary plan will be administered. 3. No eating or drinking in the shelters. 4. Keep clean at all times. 5. Obey instructions given by the staff. 6. No running around camp. 7. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES. If caught with an electronic device, it will be confiscated and turned in to the Scoutmaster. Devices will be returned after graduation. Cell phone use ONLY allowed with approval from the Scoutmaster. 8. Keep shelters clean. If there is an equipment problem, notify staff immediately. 9. Fire allowed only in designated areas. 10. Keep floors clean and dry. 11. No horseplay. 12. If you have any problems or questions, come to staff, NOT the Scoutmaster. If the Scoutmaster is required, staff will contact him/her for you. NOTICE: Boy Scouts of America and Camp Crooked Creek policy does not permit smoking or the consumption of alcoholic beverages on camp premises. All those attending activities at the camp are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with Scout Spirit and high moral standards. Misconduct will result in immediate dismissal from YLS and the camp.

7 2018 Youth Leadership Summit Leader Information Sheet ***At least one adult must be present from Scout s troop for the entire day.*** Training seats are limited to 30 participants please register early. Registration for 2018 YLS is $12. Deadline to register is January 26, Registrations after January 26 will be taken into consideration, but a late registration fee of $15 will be assessed. Adult leader registration is $10 for the day. Adult volunteers are asked to please assist in the kitchen, monitoring training, setting up the campfire ring or to help move Scouts from place to place, if required. Please mail ONLY the Youth Registration form to council keep the rest of the registration packet, including the signed Disciplinary Procedures form. During check in we will collect the disciplinary form and any other registration materials. Please send the names of the Scouts being registered to mick.chiara@gmail.com. If the Scout names are not known at the time of registration, please send your troop number and the number of Scouts you anticipate will attend the training. This will allow us to start setting patrol assignments.
