This is the second time the Gamecocks have visited the installation to help build teamwork. THE FINE ART OF Gamecocks football players tackle Army team-building exercises CONFIDENCE By ROBERT TIMMONS Fort Jackson Leader A year ago the University of South Carolina football team exited the buses and stepped into an ocean of drill sergeants circling in for the kill, but the team s visit June 21 was as different as a punt is to a toss sweep they were met with handshakes and positive reinforcement. Last year, we had to develop a certain level of toughness, said Jeff Dillman, the director of strength and conditioning for the guys working and how to train and not just survive. Now they understand how to train they can come together as one unit. course and the Team Development Course during their recent visit. The leadership of 3rd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment played an important part in constructing the event to challenge the student-athletes. Drill sergeants from across the 193rd Infantry Brigade helped mentor the players. Not only did student athletes learn teamwork, but the Army Values were constantly drilled into them by drill sergeants like Sgt. 1st Class Edward Harmes with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 120th Adjutant General Battalion. Harmes spoke to the athletes before the day started about the importance of Army Values and then reinforced the message after each event. 6 Second Chances Photo by WALLACE McBRIDE Pfc. Carter Driggs, left, is welcomed by husband, Blake, following Basic Combat Training graduation June 22 at Hilton Field. Driggs was separated from the Air Force in 2006 because of the don t ask, don t tell policy, which was repealed in Carter Driggs was discharged from the Air Force in 2006 because he was gay. Today, he s a Soldier. By WALLACE MCBRIDE Fort Jackson Leader Carter Driggs was separated from the Air Force in 2006 because of what the mili- ence: he s gay. At the time, Driggs, now 32, was banned by law from discussing his sexual orientation. But the truth eventually found its way to Driggs superiors. I was deployed at the time, Driggs said. It was my second deployment, and I was contacted by my unit back home in Germany that some information had come to light about my sexuality, and that I was to return to Germany right away. At least 11,000 Service members were discharged under don t ask, don t tell, a 1993 policy that prohibited gays and lesbians from serving openly. Even though Driggs said he had faithfully kept his part of the bargain, it didn t stop the Air Force for severing ties with Driggs just two years into his career. Because I was on my second tour, and because I had volunteered for that tour, my ably, Driggs said. We parted ways in a mutually agreeable fashion, and I ve been trying ever since the don t ask, don t tell policy was repealed to get back in. Last year, he succeeded in convincing an Army recruiter that he was serious about reestablishing a military career. Last week, he graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson with the 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment. around on pins and needles, but I ve always been good about hiding (my sexuality), Driggs said. But there was always this constant fear of being discovered, which I eventually was. He s been planning a return to uniform since don t ask, don t tell was repealed in He s been talking about it ever since we met, said his husband, Blake Driggs. He loved it. I was heartbroken, Carter Driggs said. I loved serving, and I m thankful to have the opportunity to serve again, because it s not something I wanted to stop doing in the The loss of his father also played a role in his decision to give life in the military a second chance. My father raised me to lead a life of service, he said. That s something I really wanted to exemplify again in honoring him and his memory. More has changed since 2006 than just the repeal of don t ask, don t tell. While there was no longer any legal reason to keep parts of his life secret, much of the social stigma has also lifted during that time. Driggs said he knew of three other gay Soldiers in his graduating unit that would have had interesting stories to share. The need for secrecy appears to be going away. This time around, there wasn t a person in the company that didn t know and that wasn t 100 percent supportive, Driggs said. I m very grateful for that, and I m grateful for how far the military has come in the 11 years since I ve been discharged to allow me this opportunity to come back and make things right. The abandonment of don t ask, don t tell was not the only difference this time around, though. At age 32, Driggs was almost twice as old as some of the other Soldiers training with him. And the differences in Air Force and Army basic training weren t immediately apparent, he said. They are more similar than different, ing red phase, he said. They re incredibly similar, with the psychological games and the physical activity. But, from there, the don t carry weapons in the Air Force during basic training, just for the few days we re qualifying on the weapon will we carry them at all. Physically, for the last seven strenuous. was a challenge he could meet. The age difference, the change in training standards and the life expectations of an adult might not properly align with the life of a Soldier in Basic Combat Training, he said. But, that was also the point. I wanted to put myself up to a challenge that I didn t think, at least at the beginning, that I could accomplish, he said. I m not here because it s easy. I m here because I believe in myself. His experiences also gave him an unexpected advantage. While he might have lacked the youthful stamina of a teenager, a little bit of maturity went a long way. My life experiences and my prior military experience did play a role in getting me the Platoon Guide position, allowing me to guide the 52 Soldiers we started with, and the 35 we graduated with, he said. I contribute that to my age and experience.

Palmatier was one of seven people added to the honor roll in Be the example for your Soldiers Adjutant General s Corps Hall of Fame adds 7 to its ranks By WALLACE MCBRIDE Fort Jackson Leader Fort Jackson welcomed seven men and women into the Adjutant General s Corps Hall of Fame last week, a roster that represented a healthy sampling of Soldiers from across the corps varied missions. Established in 2010, the Hall of Fame honors leaders from the Army s human resources ranks and recognizes extraor- cant contributions to the corps. Today s ceremony is an opportunity to recognize the achievements of seven Army professionals, known to us all as a dedicated ensemble of forward-thinking and creative leaders, said Col. Neal Mc- Intyre, commandant of the Adjutant General School. Who, day in and day out, operated with an edge toward a common goal: to enable their commanders by pro- personnel support to Soldiers and Families. So, this week, as our corps celebrates its 242nd birthday, we celebrate them, McIntyre said. Welcomed into the ranks last Friday at the Soldier Support Institute were Col. Thomas Palmatier, Col. Joseph E. Pedone III, Col. Arthur A. Strange III, Chief War- - Hagood and Command Sgt. Maj. Freddie Lash. tinguished Members of the Regiment, selected by the chief of the Adjutant General Corps based on nominations made throughout the year, charged with assisting the leaders with perpetuating the corps history. While there were enough guests to pack both the SSI auditorium presentations and the following unveiling ceremony at the Adjutant General School s Hall of Honor, many of the comments from this year s inductees focused on those who were unable to attend. Maj. Gen. (Kathryn ) Frost, one day, she decided she wanted to have a small working group that was going to redesign the entire HR world, Palmatier recalled. So she put then-col. Gina Farrisee and I in a room and said, You can t come out until after you redesign the entire HR world. Not knowing, of course, that Gen. Maude (would) soon show us the way ahead. After learning that he would be joining the corps Hall of Fame, Pedone said had led him to this moment. It had very little do with me, Pedone said. And it had everything to do with around me who, through their support, love and examples set the conditions for this day. So, who am I as a Soldier? asked paid for my ticket... to Fort Jackson, right here. Vietnam was still going on; my best friend was in Vietnam. He asked, Why not join the Army? It took a village to get me here today, woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. A village of Family and friends. As a leader, I learned that you had to set and be the example for your Soldiers, said Lash, who currently serves as the Adjutant General Corps Honorary Regimental Command Sergeant Major. As I was given, I gave back. I thought that was my charge. That was what I wanted from my leaders. Strange was absent from last week s ceremonies. 10 I became a soldier... FORT JACKSON MEDDAC PVT. JACKSON WILLIAMSON, 18 Lake Hellen, Florida I started my paperwork to join the Army a week after the Paris terrorist attacks last year. Both of my grandfathers (on my mother and my father s sides) served in Europe during World War II and I wanted to follow their examples and serve my country. On the civilian side, a lot of my family members work in medicine. It s something I ve always been comfortable around and something I feel like I can do AIT on Fort Sam Houston, and so far I love it. My goal right now is to become an Army Nurse. SGT. DAYLEN PRIETO, 25 NEWS Asturias, Spain I joined the Army because I have always loved military traditions and I believe there is so much pride in serving. I always used to watch military movies and learn about different things related to it. I chose Army Medicine because I liked the idea of helping other people, and I believed through medi- so many options for my future. I want to master my skills as a Soldier and as a person to become a great professional and make my family proud of all of my accomplishments. PFC. KRISTY WHITT, 24 Raeford, North Carolina I joined primarily to become a Physical Therapist. When I found out the Army had a Physical Therapy Technician program I knew it was meant for me. I m really enjoying my MOS. I really like working with the patients, and I enjoy the variety. I get to work with retirees, active duty, reservists and even Family members. Even in my off time at the gym, I m trying to help people with form to prevent injuries. My job really is the best in the world. I just spoke to our Education Department for information on working towards becoming a fully licensed physical therapist. SPC. STEPHEN DECHANT, 49 Crawfordville, Florida I wanted to join right out of high school, but it didn t work out. I tried a lot of different trip in South America and met a dentist who was working with orphans. I wanted to do something similar and give something back. Fortunately, the Army was accepting of someone my age. I really enjoy being able to provide a wide variety of care to a diverse population. Here at the MEDDAC it s really great because we have such an amazing team. SPC. HIPPOLYTE NGOUFACK, 25 Memphis, Tennessee The Army is the oldest branch of the military. There s a lot of history and I want to be a part of it. What I love most about the Army is that it never feels like the same thing every day. Between physical training, training, range time, and regular duties, every day is different. I have my Master s in Accounting and in it for the long haul. SPC. BENJAMIN ENNEKING, 24 Cincinnati I joined because of my Dad. He was an immigrant and joined when he came to America. I wanted to follow that example. I looked at the different ways I most good. I was also fortunate enough to serve in the Honor Platoon which was an incredibly impactful experience. The Army has been fantastic so far and is treating me and my family wonderfully. I would love to make this a lifetime career.

The amount of talent we had on the team and how many games we won you saw some times where guys really strained through some things, Dillman said. You want to see that more consistently all the time. 15 Workshop focuses on teen jobs By DEMETRIA MOSLEY Fort Jackson Leader Fort Jackson s Army Community Services Employment Readiness Program held a Teen Career Exploration Workshop Thursday in the Maj. Gen. John A. Renner Building. The interactive workshop focused on helping teens understand the difference between a job and career, and establish a plan to get to where they want to be. It was open to teens 14 to 18. This class is good for teens because it helps them to start thinking about they want to go, said Barbara Martin, the employment readiness program manager. One teen, Ladre Smith, said he s ready to start working. Working will keep me out of trouble, he said. I came to the workshop so I can learn what I need to do to start making money. In December, the Employment Readiness program will have a teen resume writing and interviewing tips class. We want to start preparing them early for summer jobs, said Martin.
