1 Roll of Honour The roll of honour in the Memorial Library contains the names of 75 Old Lancastrians who died in the first world war. The following additional details have been discovered. The date is the year of leaving LRGS (where known). All deaths were on the western front (France & Flanders) unless otherwise stated. Abbott WH 1915 : Signaller, King s Liverpool Regiment. Died of wounds on 6 th November Ball GF 1909 : Private in the York and Lancaster Regiment. Killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, 1 st July *Balshaw W staff :- a Housemaster in 1914 Second Lieutenant with 2 nd Manchester Regiment Missing on 25 th November 1914, believed to be a PoW, but later discovered to have been killed. Batchelor FA Captain 2 King s African Rifles. Died of wounds in Africa in November Bateman EW 1987 : 7 Canadian Infantry. Missing, presumed dead in 1918 *Bates SK 1914 : Lieutenant 5 King s Own -the youngest officer in the British Army. Killed in May 1915, still several weeks short of his 18 th birthday. Killed in action on 1 st October *Brash W 1908: Teacher at the Boys National School & member of Priory choir. Enlisted in 5 King s Own 1914 : Sergeant 1915 & commissioned Killed in action in Brockbank TC 1909 : Gunner Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds at Ypres on 1 st June Brown WM 1915 : Lived in Bridge Road : went to Greaves School before LRGS. Gunner in Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action Head Prefect in 1915 & Captain of the XI for two seasons. Bryning JW Enlisted into Army Service Corps (Mechanical Transport Section) but transferred to King s Royal Rifles, as Rifleman. Killed in action at Ypres, May 1915 *Dixon F School Porter 1908 to 1914 : ex-regular soldier who had served in the South African war, and re-enlisted as Private in 5 King s Own in December Killed in action May Dowthwaite JB 1898 : Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps : died of malaria in East Africa. *Edmondson T 1912 : Private in 5 King s Own. Gornal l NC 1917: Lived in Skerton, at Boys National School, then LRGS. Was in XV & XI, senior NCO of OTC and Head Prefect. 2/Lt Royal Engineers Killed in action on 21 st March *Gough HPB April Staff (Chemistry master for six years). Major : MC & Bar. Died of wounds on 12 th *Guy AJ 1913 : Lived on St Mary s Parade : enlisted in 3 Border Regiment. Served in Dardanelles, then in France. Missing, presumed killed in action on the Somme on 1st July Name added later to the war memorial. Hall E 1908 : enlisted in 5 King s Own & killed in action in *Hall TSI 1902 : Lieutenant in 5 th Royal Fusiliers. Son of a previous Mayor of Lancaster, and a member of Vale of Lune RUFC. To Oxford on leaving LRGS, enlisted in September 1914 and was commissioned in the autumn of Missing, presumed killed in Mesopotamia in April Harrop JA 1916 :Lived in Coulston Road. Member of OTC. Enlisted in Lancashire Hussars 1916, then 2 nd Lieutenant in 2 Shropshire Light Infantry. Killed in action on 8 th October Hatch JD 1912 : Lived in Queen Street. Signaller in 5 King s Own in Killed in action on 25 th August Hayhurst C Private in the Royal Fusiliers. Killed in action on 22 nd August Hodgson JW Private, King s Liverpool Regiment. Wounded in Killed in action in 1918.

3 *Holderness H Enlisted in 10 th Hampshire Regiment in 1914 : commissioned into Sherwood Foresters Killed in action in April *Howson GRP 1900 : enlisted in 1 Royal Fusiliers 1914 : commissioned into King s Own 1915, as 2 nd Lieutenant. Killed in action in April 1917 ( Easter Monday), when leading his platoon. *Irving R Lived in Prospect Street, and was on the teaching staff of Greaves School, and a member of Vale of Lune RUFC when he enlisted in 5 King s Own as a private in 1914 : was made Sergeant in 1915, CSM in 1916, and commissioned in the field as Lieutenant in Wounded at Ypres in 1915 and killed in action 1916, leading his platoon. A memorial tablet in Greaves School was moved to the Castle School (now Central Lancaster HS) when it replaced Greaves. *Jackson GW Sergeant in 4 Coldstream Guards. DCM Killed in action Keetly H War Memorial. 5 King s Own. Died in 1920 as a result of military service. His name is not on the *Keir EH 1914 : A former Queen s Prize winner, and an early member of the OTC, he left School in July 1914 and joined the King s Own on the outbreak of war. He was commissioned into the9th battalion in December 1914, but later transferred into the Royal Flying Corps, qualifying as a pilot. He was engaged in patrol and artillery observation on the western front, shooting down a German Albatross aircraft while doing so. He and his observer were both killed in action in 1917, when he was not yet 21. The letter from his squadron commander Major CFA Portal was published in the Lancastrian of December 1917 : it is of more interest in that by 1945 its author had become Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Portal, Chief of the Air Staff. In 1918 his parents endowed a prize in his memory : this is still presented on Speech Day to a cadet of the RAF Section, CCF. Kirkbride RW Private in the County of London Regiment Sergeant by Killed in action in September *Langstreth E 1905: Lieutenant RNVR. Lived in Scotforth Road. After leaving LRGS he read engineering at Victoria University, Manchester before joining the Royal Navy. Served ashore with Royal Naval Division at Gallipoli & then in France. Killed in action on 13th November Leggett MCM Lieutenant, Baganda Rifles MC Died of fever in Uganda on active service. *Lloyd-Evans EM : Captain in 5 King s Own Died of wounds 15 th March *Lord CE 1887 : went on to Peterhouse, Cambridge. South Staffordshire Regiment served in the South African war. A Major by 1915, when he died of severe wounds on 23 rd June, aged 46. *Manson BEA 1893 : born in India, and later joined the Indian Army. A Captain in 61 st Pioneers, he was killed in German East Africa on 18 th November *Marriott GEJ 1907 : head prefect. Went to Peterhouse, Cambridge to read Classics, then taught at Oldham GS. Served with Lancashire Fusiliers in Egypt as Lieutenant. Captain Killed in action in May 1917.

Killed in action 1917 *Newton W 1898 : Sergeant in Manchester Regiment. Killed in action Oglethorpe EA 1909 ; Marine Engineer. Enlisted in New Zealand contingent. Died of wounds on 2 nd April 1917, aged 24. Pape H Private in 5 Saskatchewan Regiment. Killed at Vimy Ridge on 24 th May Phillips T 1915 : Lived at Ship Hotel, North Road & attended Sulyard Street School before LRGS. XV, XI, OTC & Head prefect / Lieutenant 10 King s Own. Captain Transferred to 10 Squadron Royal Flying Corps in Died of injuries received in a crash on a training flight in *Pinch W 1908 : Attended Greaves School before LRGS : represented Vale of Lune & John o Gaunt RC. Went to Chester College & then taught at the National School. Enlisted in 5 King s Own on the outbreak of war. Wounded nd Lieutenant Killed in action Price JT 1911 : Private 5 King s Own. Corporal Commissioned as 2/Lieutenant in Missing in action in 1918, presumed killed. *Prickett JE 1911 : Private in 8 Durham Light Infantry. Missing, presumed killed in Procter LW Gunner, Canadian Division Royal Field Artillery. 2 nd Lieutenant Killed, leading his men into action on July 31 st *Ripper AG 1913 : Lance Corporal in 5 King s Own. Killed in action on 8 th May 1915, aged 20 *Sayle GRF 1897 : Lieutenant Royal Field Artillery. Died, aged 34 on 10 th May 1915, from wounds received the previous day Sharples FP 1912 : 4 Royal Fusiliers. Name added later to the war memorial. Standen JW 1908 : Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed in action 1918.

Sergeant in 5 King s Own : Killed in France on 26 th May, Had just been recommended for a commission. *Webster GC Enlisted in 5 King s Own, Transferred to Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Missing, believed killed, in March *Welch EA 1910 : Lived in Belle Vue Terrace. Enlisted in King s Own in August 1914 & was commissioned into 8th King s Own in Transferred to Royal Flying Corps in Killed in action 23 rd April 1917, aged 22, when he was attacked by five German aircraft while on a photographic mission. Whitehead M 1913 : 2nd Lieutenant in the King s Liverpool Regiment. Lived on Spring Bank : joined the Civil Service on leaving LRGS. Killed, leading his platoon into action at Thiepval on 12 th August 1916 Widdop AN 1905 : enlisted in Artists Rifles, transferred to 4 West Kent Regiment (the Buffs), then to Royal Engineers. Killed in action on 30 th September Lancashire rugby XV. Widdop C Lance Corporal, Manchester Regiment. Killed in action in April *Wills AG Lieutenant, 7 Sherwood Foresters. Killed in action Wood SH Lived in Westbourne Road : attended Christ Church School before LRGS. Pupil teacher at Bowerham School, then worked in commerce in Africa until Joined 5 King s Own 1915, Sergeant 1916 & 2 nd Lieutenant Killed in action 1917, leaving a widow whom he had married only 3 months previously. An asterisk indicates those known to have been serving by December A Memorial service held in Christ Church on All Saints Day The proposal for a war memorial was made in 1917, and a committee chaired by HL Storey DL (OL) and including the Headmaster, the Mayor (Cllr W Briggs) and Sir Norval Helme (MP for Lancaster) was appointed. Aimed to raise 5,000 for a Memorial Library or the purchase of the ( then leased) playing fields on Derwent Road both targets were achieved.
