5 PAGE 5 PENNSYLVA NIA NATIONA L GUARD MILITARY MUSEUM THE BOARD BULLETIN by David J. Smoker, Col. (USAF, Ret.) As I write this article on the first day of spring, it appears more like the first day of winter, as it has been snowing all day! But take heart, spring must truly be around the corner. Speaking of spring, we are going to try something new this year in conjunction with the picnic. Thanks to the initiative of Brig Gen Jerry Otterbein and the hard work of a committee of board members, we are planning a car show in conjunction with our annual picnic this year. The 1 st Annual Military and Muscle Car Show will be held at the museum on Armed Forces Day, Saturday, 19 May 2018, from 10am 2pm with a rain date of Sunday, 20 May 2018, with the same hours of operation. The goal is to grow the attendance of the picnic, have some fun at the car show, make a little money for the museum, and get more of the public interested in the museum. The car show will feature pre-1976 military vehicles, muscle cars, and trucks. Registration for participating vehicles is $10, but admission is free for car show spectators and museum visitors. Tours of the museum, range house, and chapel will be on tap and the car show will feature a silent auction and door prizes. Food and drinks will be available for purchase and a DJ will provide music. Awards for the car show will include People s Choice, Sponsor s Choice, Recruiter s Choice, and the General s Trophy. A flyer for the car show is included in this newsletter. Please come out and join us on Saturday, 19 May 2018, for this exciting new event! Finally, please mark your calendars and plan to join us for the 10 th Annual Maj Gen Frank H. Smoker, Jr., Foxhole Invitational Golf Tournament. It will be on Saturday, 8 September 2018, at Blue Mountain Golf Course in Fredericksburg, PA. Pennsylvania National Guard Military Museum 1st Annual Military and Muscle Car and Truck Show and Picnic Please come out to support the museum and join us for the 1st Annual Military and Muscle Car and Truck Show and Picnic! We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 19 May 2018 from 10am to 2pm, with a rain date of Sunday 20 May Good food, ice cream, fun and camaraderie are the order of the day! We hope to see you there!

Oellig John Boyde Goheen was born in Tyrone, Blair County, PA on September 17, He enlisted as a private in the Sheridan Troop of Cavalry on May 1, 1913 at the age of twenty years. He was 5 8 1/2 tall, had a light complexion, brown eyes and red hair. He advanced to the rank of corporal on April 12, His first enlistment being up he reenlisted May 1, 1916, then signed up for Mexican Border service with the Troop July 6, There the cavalry spent most of it s time patrolling the border between Texas and Mexico. He returned home January 23, 1917 as a sergeant. The troop was only home for a few months when they were called for duty in World War I. While in training at Camp Hancock, Georgia the Pennsylvania division was now reorganized as the 28th Division. A new second lieutenant, Goheen was briefly transferred to the 103rd Engineers, then to the newly formed 305th Cavalry (National Army) and then to the 15th Trench Mortar Battery. On March 15, 1919 lieutenant Goheen was sent to the U.S. Cavalry officers schools at Camp Meade, Maryland. He completed Cavalry School on April 1, Troop B, First Pennsylvania Cavalry was reorganized in the PNG and John Goheen was promoted to first lieutenant. As of June 1, 1921 the troop was redesignated Troop B, 104th Cavalry (Sheridan Troop), Photo taken by Mr. Charles B. Oellig, Museum Curator, from the Museum Collection 52nd Cavalry Brigade, PNG. This new brigade consisted of the 103rd and 104th Cavalry Regiments. The new captain of the troop was John Boyde Goheen. He retired from the Guard in 1927 after fourteen years of service and two deployments. This is the 51st in a series of historical photographs of Pennsylvania National Guardsmen of the past, submitted by Mr. Charles B. Oellig, curator of the Pennsylvania National Guard Military Museum at Fort Indiantown Gap. The Museum is open Mondays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or other days by appointment. Call (717) , or visit for more information or to schedule an appointment. The Museum is closed on major holidays.

7 PAGE 7 PENNSYLVA NIA NATIONA L GUARD MILITARY MUSEUM WORLD WAR I SOLDIER OF THE QUARTER SGT THOMAS O. MADER by SGT Damian J. M. Smith First Sergeant Thomas O. Mader, Battery A, 109th Field Artillery received the Distinguished Service Cross during actions in World War I. His citation reads: Near Varennes, France, October 2, 1918, he displayed great coolness and bravery in helping to guide a section of his battery over a road swept by enemy shell fire, during which eight men were wounded and ten horses killed, including one which he himself rode. The driver of a swing team, having difficulty controlling one of the horses of a section, was assigned to another horse and his place was taken by Sergeant Mader, who guided the section until he was so severely wounded that he was unable to continue. In spite of his wounds, he directed the carriages to places of safety and, disregarding his own personal safety, requested that the medical officer first give attention to the other wounded. Sergeant Mader s conduct was an inspiration to the men of his battery. 28th INFANTRY DIVISION CHANGES ITS OFFFICAL MOTTO by SGT Damian J. M. Smith It is now official: the 28th Infantry Division request to officially change its division motto has been approved by The Institute of Heraldry (TIOH) as of 21 February The division s new motto is now officially ROLL ON. Most people thought it was always ROLL ON, but since World War I, the 28th Infantry Division s official motto had been Fire and Movement MUSEUM S YEAR IN REVIEW by SGT Damian J. M. Smith The Pennsylvania National Guard Military Museum had a year of mixed results for the 2017 calendar year. While the number of tour groups increased, the overall size of each tour group decreased. Visitation to the museum further decreased by more than 700 visitors during some of the peak travel months as the museum was undergoing major repairs to the building, including new windows, siding, roofs, handicap ramps and fire escapes. While the number of views on social media sites such as Facebook rose by 11%, views to the museum website decreased in However, the museum received more group visitors than 2016, but we were still down 10 groups from the high several years ago. The number of historical requests for information decreased by more than one hundred, due largely to the museum closure in the summer for building repairs and military training. The big emphasis this year is the continued work on the WWI Centennial /- From Visitors: Numbers Previous Year -Museum Visitors (Signed In) 1, Museum Visitors 1, (Est 5% more for those that did not sign in at the museum) -Museum Tour Group Face Book Members 1, (68% are men, 32% are female Facebook members) Museum Website 2017 stats include: -Unique Visitors 21,733-4,507 -Website Visitors 29,174-8,609 -Pages Viewed 66,419-20,880 -Website Hits 601, ,684 -Bandwidth Data GB GB of data 2017 Historical Requests Answered: -Museum Director Command Historian (Down due to 10 weeks training away from the office) Total Historical Requests
