COURSE NAME: As depicted in the chart above the course names for each year are titled Aerospace Science One (AS-1), Aerospace Science Two (AS-2), etc. The curriculum is divided as Aerospace Science (AS), Wellness lessons/activities (WE) and Leadership Curriculum (LE). The Aerospace portion is Cultural Awareness Studies one year and History of Flight the second year. The third year will be based on contemporary world events in the 21st Century. The Leadership curriculum is three years of curriculum followed by a fourth year as corps management. As cadets enter the program they will be taught military drill, wear of the uniform, and Air Force Customs and Courtesies. They will receive a refresher of these basics the first quarter of every year. The next three quarters will be either LE-1 or LE-2 curriculum. The curriculum is rotated every other year for students in their first two years. The first two years of leadership and aerospace or global awareness curriculum is neither progressive nor dependent on the first year being taught first. Required Texts: There are no required text books to purchase. Text books normally remain in the classroom. Instructors may provide students a text on a hand-receipt if student as required to make-up work. Accountable AFJROTC items include texts and uniforms and must be returned to instructors, or payment will be assigned by school bookkeeper to parent/guardian until reimbursement is satisfied. Internet Home Page: We use a web page called QUIA and the Blackboard software to post events, assign projects, and perform student assessments. We also use it to share slide-shows of our many extra-curricular activities. Students can use the webpage to follow up on missed assignments and retake most of their quizzes and tests.

4 Credit Hours: Enrollment in AFJROTC at Laurel Oaks equals an Elective credit or with approval of home schools and counselors, two years can equal HS PE credit, if one s home school has approved and assigns this credit. Goal/Outcomes: Through cultural/global awareness studies, students will learn to see their world through many different perspectives. They will learn to explore and discover the processes that shape our shared past histories and future on our planet, the relationships between people and environments, the link between people and places. Leadership Education offers students many opportunities to shape their character. Students will learn about character development while many character-building topics are discussed. Elements of good citizenship are instilled in students. They are introduced to Air Force organizational structure, uniform wear, military customs and courtesies, flag etiquette, first aid, health and wellness, fitness, individual self-control, basic drill and ceremonies, effective communications, they will learn to listen and think critically, how to prepare for leadership, how to build personal awareness, key elements of building and encouraging effective teams, key behaviors for becoming a credible and competent leader, the importance of charting a career path, specific career options, how to create a personal budget and financial plan, the importance of management, making decisions, and problem solving, human relations and life skills. Course Objectives: JROTC is a blend of several courses. A brief objective of each course follows: Aerospace Studies: a Journey into Aviation History focuses on the development of flight through the 20 th century into modern day. A brief astronomical and history of space exploration and past and current activities will be surveyed and researched by students. Cultural Studies: an Introduction to Global Awareness is a customized course about the world s cultures. It is designed to introduce students to the study of world affairs, regional studies, and cultural awareness. Students will develop awareness into history, geography, religions, languages, culture, political systems, economics, social issues, environmental concerns, and human rights. They will become knowledgeable of major events and significant figures that have shaped each region. The Science of Fight, A Gateway to New Horizons is a curriculum to analyze flight, evaluate atmospheric conditions affecting flight and flight s affects on the human body and an introduction to flight navigation and aerial aids. Space Exploration reviewed space travel from Sputnik, Gemini, Apollo, the Shuttle program. A science field trip to the educational Shuttle Challenger center is scheduled Leadership Education I: Citizenship, Character, and Air Force Traditions is to provide information about military traditions, citizenship, wellness, health, fitness, and how to exercise self-control. Leadership Education II: Communication, Awareness, and Leadership focuses on the AFJROTC mission to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community through better communication, increased awareness of self and others, and improved leadership. LE-1 s Wellness lessons and incorporated into the WE curriculum. Leadership Education III: Life Skill and Career Opportunities is designed to teach students to map their future careers, build a financial plan to support their plans, and aim towards higher education. Leadership Education IV: Management Principles provides the more mature student a perspective of all the functions of management and is intended to assist them in understanding how things get done in an organization. Wellness Objectives: Wellness is an official part of the Air Force Junior ROTC program. It is an exercise program focused upon individual base line improvements with the goal of

5 achieving a national standard as calculated with age and gender. The program s purpose is to encourage cadets to develop individualized training programs. The actual exercise is only one a week on the average. It s not expected to have a drastic impact on the wellbeing of the student; conversely, it is intended to give the student the fundamental understanding of a successful fitness plan and motivate JROTC cadets to lead active, healthy lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives. Exercising will appropriate for student s unique health concerns and incorporate the AFJROTC s President s National Physical Fitness Challenge and programs.. Uniform Policy: There are two categories of students. Students enrolled in JROTC and cadets. Cadets are those that wear the uniform. Only, first year freshman from Wilmington High School may opt out of wearing their uniform the first year. However, they will lose many privileges as stipulated below. All others enrolled in JROTC must wear the uniform and meet the grooming standards. 1. Some of our field trips are for cadets ONLY. We are required to wear the uniform for base visits, incentive flights on military aircraft or thru the local civil air patrol, and other trips the senior instructor deems appropriate. 2. Annual Awards. At the end of the year cadets are awarded medals and ribbons by over 22 local chapters of organizations like the VFW, American Legion, etc. 3. Weekly ribbons. First year students cannot be awarded ribbons since they do not wear a uniform. Ribbons are awarded for things like community service, fitness achievements, attending our activities etc. to cadets that wear the uniform. 4. Those that wear the uniform weekly get a uniform grade that significantly boosts their grade. First Year Cadet Status: Those freshman students that initially opt out of wearing the uniform may re-apply 2 nd Quarter to wear the uniform. But, must formerly request to Major Buerki, by a personally written letter and pre-signed by cadet s parents his or her sincere intent to meet all the uniform requirements. The Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (Major Buerki) will consider the following conditions before awarding cadet status and distribution of a loaned AFJROTC uniform. (If you have shown to demonstrate good behavior and responsibility with assignments in class and you are increasingly active with JROTC activities, then the more likely you will be approved!) Below is the criteria reviewed to make the decision: 1. Excellence school and JROTC attendance. 2. No suspensions. 3. At least a C in all subjects for first quarter 4. Strong participation in JROTC activities. 5. A one page essay on why you deserve this consideration. 6. Submit to Major Buerki as earlier as possible with parents signature, but no later than 22 October First Year Cadet Process: Not later than 20 October the Cadet Commander will recommend first year cadets for cadet status. The nomination must list all the above criteria, how well they have done and a request by the cadet for the honor. The senior aerospace science instructor along with the NCO will review the nominations and consider the cadets that have been nominated. Those approved will be issued a uniform. Cadet Uniform Policy: Your uniform must be worn once a week for a required grade, usually on Wednesday. You should plan to clean it often and iron it frequently. Only the blue shirt may be laundered and a home washer/dryer. Commercial dry

6 cleaning is needed for the jackets and trousers/slacks, due to the fabric. Cadets may earn up to 100 points per inspection depending on their clean, wrinkle- free appearance and grooming and appropriate wearing of the AFJROTC uniform and timeliness of meeting the inspection. Cadets absent for any reason must make-up their missed uniform weekly grade. All Laurel Oaks cadets may wear their uniform only during their academic schedule, that is, ½ day, because students are assigned lab attire to be worn in their career laboratory. Wilmington High School cadets (who are not enrolled at Laurel Oaks) must have their uniform on upon arrival at Laurel Oaks on uniform days. Typically, WHS students wear their AFJROTC uniform all day at school. TYPICAL WEEKLY CLASS SCHEDULE: Monday/Tuesday or Thursday/Friday Leadership Lab Education (LE) or Wellness & Fitness (WE) 1st and 4 th Quarters); or Aerospace Studies (AS)-Aviation History/Cultural Awareness/Aviation- 2 nd & 3 rd Quarters Every Wednesday is a graded uniform inspection day! Cadets will be notified of any alternate dates, for example a scheduled field trip. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES/COURSE STANDARDS: 1. Cadets are expected to obey rules, demonstrate good conduct, and perform as decent citizens of the school and AFJROTC community. They are responsible for the following assigned activities: bell work writing (turn-in or journal, assessments, uniform inspections, projects or reports, unless otherwise announced by the instructor. 2. Always check the Scheduled Events posted on the white board, Blackboard online, or on our JROTC web page: JROTC happenings change, but are scheduled in advance and communicated. Keep informed on upcoming plans. 3. Course work and uniform inspections due to absences, job placement, field trips, sickness, or alternative school/ suspensions must be made-up. TYPICAL WEEKLY CLASS SCHEDULE: Monday/Tuesday Leadership Lab Education (LE) Thursday/Friday Aerospace Studies - 2 nd & 3 rd Quarters Thursday/Friday Wellness & Fitness 1 st Quarter and 4 th Quarter *8 th period includes 1 st year cadets flight (class) and Returning cadets Leaders Flight (class). 7 Grading Scale Scale % Percentage Letter Grade Points 90%-100 A-Superior %-89% B-Above Average %-79% C-Average %-69% D-Below Average 1.0 0%-59% F-Failing GRADING PROCEDURES AND EVALUATION: 1. First and Second Year cadets: 70% of their grade is their academics (quizzes, tests, projects, homework assignments etc.) 30% of their grade is uniform inspection * First Year students that are not given a uniform will receive their grade based on an average of their academic assessments only. For those wishing to boost their grade, retake the assessments as often as you wish until the deadline or ask for extra-credit assignments. *Grades may be adjusted an extra 10%, if a cadet is on time to class, prepared with course materials, assignments and alert and cordial during class and he or she has no disciplinary issues or attendance issues at Laurel Oaks or their home school. 2. Third Year cadets: 40% of their grade is workbook, 30% is uniform inspection, and 30% is their assigned corps responsibility. 3. Fourth Year cadets: 30% uniform and 70% corps duty. Even though uniform inspections comprise only 30% of the grade they are a pass/fail item. Translation: If a student is missing a grade for more than two inspections in a quarter their grade will be manually adjusted to a 59% (F) for that quarter.
